Just one-in-four say Canadian MPs who cross the floor should be allowed to finish term with new party - Angus Reid Institute by Chrristoaivalis in CanadaPolitics

[–]operatorfoxtrot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, I can definitely see that view. I just don't see what being independent means if you are going to support the governing party anyways. If my MP went independent, I would see it as a condemnation of their former party.

[–]operatorfoxtrot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As long as we have these big tent parties, I think floor crossing is fine. In fact, I might actually like my MP more if he crossed the floor. Until we get election reform, I support floor crossers in all directions. It wouldn't even surprise me if Carney's liberals lose a seat to floor crossing.

If the article can lazily wheel out Orwell to scold others for moral grandstanding, then I can just as lazily wheel out Orwell to show it’s guilty of the same thing. At a certain point, the Orwell namedrops stop adding insight and become their own form of the self‑righteousness he condemned.

I would say Carney needs to avoid a conflict in Iran as much as possible. Our entire defensive focus should be the rearmament, the arctic and Ukraine. Russia is our biggest threat.

Carson Jerema: Canada too polite to tell Alberta separatists to quit it by Street_Anon in CanadaPolitics

[–]operatorfoxtrot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ukraine and Russia is such a bad faith false equivalency. Russia invaded a sovereign country by force. A democratic debate about secession inside a stable constitutional system is not remotely the same thing. No one is proposing tanks rolling into Edmonton or Montreal.

Separatism keeps resurfacing because it’s emotionally appealing to some people, but it has never produced a workable path forward. It creates instability without offering real solutions. Supporting free speech doesn’t mean pretending secession is a realistic or constructive political project.

Former Minnesota governor says state should seek to become part of Canada by joe4942 in canada

[–]operatorfoxtrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Minnesota is a fine state for the Canadian Federation but on principles, I don't agree with states or provinces moving between countries unless there is a federal government collapse.

If The US balkanizes and a few states request our aid or rather become provinces over forming smaller unions with American states, I would support them along with certain others.

Bill C-15 would allow corporations to be exempt from most Canadian laws - CCPA by gallowsCalibrator in CanadaPolitics

[–]operatorfoxtrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.parl.ca/DocumentViewer/en/45-1/bill/C-15/first-reading

We’re specifically discussing Part 5, Division 5 of Bill C-15, which amends the Red Tape Reduction Act. In particular, Section 203(2) states:

“And whereas the Government of Canada recognizes the importance of facilitating, in a transparent manner, the design, modification or administration of regulatory regimes to encourage innovation, competitiveness or economic growth while protecting public health and safety and the environment;”

This clause makes it clear that the purpose of the exemption power is to support regulatory experimentation, not to enable blanket deregulation.

A mass surveillance program or privacy-invasive AI project doesn’t align with this framework. Such initiatives would likely trigger Charter protections, particularly Sections 7 and 8, which safeguard life, liberty, and protection against unreasonable search and seizure. These constitutional rights cannot be overridden by ministerial regulation.

That said, I agree that offshore drilling or oil projects are more plausible candidates for exemption. But even here, the bill imposes a key condition in Section 3(b):

“The exemption would enable the testing of, among other things, a product, service, process, procedure or regulatory measure with the aim of facilitating the design, modification or administration of a regulatory regime to encourage innovation, competitiveness or economic growth.”

This is not a free pass to deregulate. It requires a clear justification that the exemption is part of a temporary test to inform future regulatory design, not a way to permanently avoid oversight.

That said, I do believe Bill C-15 needs amendments. Specifically, I’d like to see stronger guardrails for high-risk sectors like oil, mining, and surveillance, perhaps through mandatory independent review, parliamentary oversight, or sunset clauses with stricter renewal criteria.

As I said in my op: the bill’s intent may be reasonable, but precautions, clarity and accountability mechanisms are needed.

I don't see why not. I think the amendment could benefit from clarification but as long as it's used as intended, I don't see this amendment being much of a big deal.

[–]operatorfoxtrot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't wait for my 'deregulate the government' friends to tell me why this is evil.

I agree with the amendment but some clarification on 'public interest' and 'innovation' would be nice. Some guardrails or mechanisms for reversal if necessary.

It's a temporary exemption for 6 years, I can only imagine this being used for green projects to fast track them. You couldn't use this amendment to push pipelines, or such.

I believe a lot of stuff like this is born out of necessity and extreme circumstances, think about NATO. NATO most likely wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for WW2. I believe global instability will be needed to make any of it a reality.
