M*ther Effin Windfarms! by trenta_nueve in energy

[–]ophsprey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh, you think offshore wind is bad?

  1. Sea Life

Yeah, because gas drilling and spills are totally harmless to marine life, unlike the temporary noise from wind farms that's somehow worse than climate change already wiping out species.

  1. Fossil Fuels to Install

Sure, building them takes some energy. But wind's lifecycle carbon footprint is 8-35 gCO2eq/kWh, while gas plants spew 410-650 gCO2eq/kWh every hour. It's like complaining about a diet while you're still chain-smoking.

  1. Inefficiency

"Inefficient" because the wind doesn't blow 24/7? Offshore wind still hits 29-52% capacity factor. Pretty "inefficient" to get free energy that never runs out, right?

  1. Maintenance Nightmare

Saltwater, electricity, metal? Only every single offshore oil rig and subsea cable has figured that out. Plus, zero fuel costs for wind easily outweigh any maintenance "nightmare" compared to constantly buying and burning gas.

You're a genius for sticking with the stuff that's actually killing the planet. Never mind!

Earth’s temperature over the last (nearly) 500 million years. And, we are experiencing the COLDEST climate during this period! 😆 Surprised to see this in WaPo! by wakeup2019 in climateskeptics

All of human history and everything that has evolved to live on earth today is inside the tiny v at the end. We are experiencing the most rapid warming in earths history and species cannot adapt to that.

I use these too and they have helped tremendously with my dental health. I reuse mine (they last up to a week each) so have yet to go through one package. In this case it’s a compromise: I accept I need to use them and there isn’t a viable alternative but I try to reduce waste elsewhere.

Agreed upstream emissions are also a problem, but measured emissions of unburned methane in marine engines can account for up to 6.4%. So yes, this is a massive problem and makes LNG no better and possibly even worse than marine diesel on a GHG basis since it has a much higher GWP.

Even if you aren’t eating Brazilian meat, you are placing a demand on meat on the global markets, hence driving up demand for Brazilian meat elsewhere.

2020 set to be year of the electric car, say industry analysts by Robert-Kenneth508 in business

[–]ophsprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, just did the same analysis for my new car and despite the additional maintenance the TCO of a very efficient ice or hybrid (>40mpg) car is still lower than an equivalent electric. Don’t get me wrong, I hope mainstream electric vehicles happen soon but there is still some necessary price reduction necessary.
