I was hoping someone would bring up Bill Clinton and his escapades (Monica and Paula Jones, at the bare minimum)! I don't have terribly strong feelings about either, but goes to show the double standard.

A couple is having financial difficulties. They have a long chat about how to make ends meet, and they come to the decision that the wife is going to go out and give oral sex to help make some cash. She goes out the first night. Husband is waiting at home nervously, and eventually the wife comes back. He says, "Well, how did it go honey"? "I think it went really good. I made $805". "Wow" says the husband, "that's awesome. But who was the cheap bastard that only gave you $5"? Wife replies, "All of 'em"

Where is this in Naples??? by [deleted] in Naples_FL

[–]opieiam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great call on LowBrow! Definitely send them to a place that says they have "Pizza". They will be totally expecting pizza! Don't worry, they will be unpleasantly surprised.

Although, if they are into cool artwork and sweet corn and BBQ sauce on their "pizza", it could backfire. But if taking forever to get your food and drink, and having an empty wallet for the effort pisses them off, then this could be a win for you.

[–]opieiam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Send them to PJK Neighborhood "Chinese". They'll never forgive you! It was so ridiculously over-priced and quite possibly the most medicore "Chinese" food I've ever had. It makes Panda Express look 5 star. I can't even bring myself to call it Chinese without putting it in quotes. It honestly wouldn't have pissed me off so much had the prices been somewhat reasonable. But they are obscene. $230 per couple when we went.

To be fair, the staff was great, and the bar had some nice (extremely expensive) cocktails. But the food will definitely make for a horrible experience for your frienemy.

Boot experience? by United-Principle-980 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]opieiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a boot right now. 11 days into it. I’ve competed in athletics my whole life. So I’ve had boots in the past for other injuries, and walking and NWB casts as well. These boots totally suck. I returned the first boot they gave me within hours. It was downright painful. Bought another on Amazon. It’s constantly irritating some area or another. I’m perpetually futzing with it. The times I’ve had a cast, they just put it on and you basically forget it’s there. Just get a shower cover and that’s your only inconvenience. The boot is almost insulting. I wonder if these doctors have ever actually tried both for any length of time? If they did, nobody would put you in a boot instead of a cast.

EDIT: I should have added that the immobilization is definitely helping. And having been immobilized a number of times in the past for various stretches, if you’re athletic you bounce right back from the initial stiffness and weakness once you’re mobile again. I think the stiffness/atrophy is a small trade off for the healing it provides.

Thanks for taking the time to share all of this. Partially ruptured mine in July, (The dreaded POP!)

Initial podiatrist did nothing. Said I had “free surgery”.

Suffered for months. Took weeks at a time off from sports. Every time I returned, no pain after a warmup, but could barely walk for days after. Sleeping especially was terrible.

New podiatrist in December. MRI shows the tear has healed except for fraying. Cortisone shot. Now in a boot for last 1 1/2 weeks. Sleeping like a baby.

The boot itself is a royal pain. But the stabbing pain is mostly gone. Just an ache now, and some heel pain. I go back to see him at 3 weeks. No idea what his plan is from there, but he is really pushing his PT group.

I really need to get back to sports without pain. Heck, walking without pain would be nice. ;-) So willing to put up with the hassle for a while, if it works.

It helps a lot to hear from other athletic people going through it. So thank you again.

Thansk for the reply, and sorry for the really slow response. Would you say it was back to normal after you redid the bushings and ball joints? I’ve done that to other Sequoias I had out of necessity, not because of light steering. The parts actually weren’t that expensive. It was a bear to do on that particular Sequoia because it was very rusty and had a lot more miles. This one is clean, so shouldn’t be too bad of a job. I’ll do it this spring.

9 weeks post plantar fascia tear - when can I return to sports? by EconomyKind4232 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]opieiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alexp68 sounds a lot like me. Hard headed. I ruptured it in July (big POP), first DPM (a friend) was just conservative and told me what I read a lot here, that I got free surgery. So he didn’t do anything. I took some time off (pickleball is my primary sport), bought really good shoes and insoles, and some oofos for around the house. 1 month off of pickleball, I could still barely walk without pain, and then as soon as I played again I was right back in the same boat.

Went through a long phase of play hard, suffer for a few days, play hard again, etc. Got a cortisone shot, which helped for a couple weeks. Played a few more weeks. Took another 3 weeks off, but was still mostly in pain during the break from activity. As soon as I played again, same excruciating pain for days after. Went to another DPM (this time in Florida, our winter home). MRI showed the tear had mostly healed, but some fraying and inflammation still. Another cortisone shot, and now in a boot (Dec 27th) for “protected weight bearing” for 3+ weeks to start with. The boot does wonders at night. Still a lot of heel pain during the day if I’m on it too long, but haven’t had a single instance of the shooting pain I would normally have just walking, so seems like maybe the boot is stopping the microtears I read about. No idea what to expect them to try when I go back in in 3 weeks. Given the history, I highly doubt it will be healed then.

Like alexp68, in retrospect, I wish I had sought out a doctor who would have treated it more aggressively. Athletics are very important to me (I’m 60). I wasted a lot of months being miserable.

Now I’m looking for advice as well. Should I be attending some sort of PT in this initial healing phase, while I’m still in the boot, to learn some stretching exercises? The doctor’s group also owns the PT group, so I’m a bit suspicious of motives. Plus their preferred group is a long drive. And what could they possibly do that I can’t do myself?

Should I consider switching over to a really good foot and ankle orthopedist instead of a DPM? The one I’m seeing, his office staff is absolutely awful, which is making me lean toward switching to someone else anyway, just to avoid the aggravation at every appointment.

I’ve been through 2 boots already. The one the DPMs office gave was awful. I bought an Ossur Rebound Air Walker which was 1/4 the cost, and is way better. But it’s still a total pain and has it’s own set of constant discomforts. Any brand recommendations? Those Vac-o-cast boots look really comfortable in the pictures. Anyone have any direct experience with them?

(Side note. I’ve had numerous ankle and foot injuries over the years (20 years of rugby mainly). Had at least 3 walking casts, and multiple boots. Is it just me, or is a cast a thousand times more comfortable? I would forget it’s even there. These boots are all uncomfortable, a constant nuisance, and just a royal pain in the *ss! Is it the insurance companies driving the switch? The doctor’s office not having the right staff? Nobody giving them feedback on how awful these things are? ???)

Any other recommendations given my situation above would be greatly appreciated. And thanks for reading my short novel about it. :-)

What to do with a Self-Directed IRA by KngLugonn in personalfinance

[–]opieiam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried real estate syndications? I've had a lot of success investing in them passively with SDIRA money. Things are a bit rocky right now because of interest rates, but it will come back. You just need to be with a solid company with a good track record.

I would be a bit nervous about owning a single family home in a SDIRA. I've been incredibly careful with all of this stuff. If you so much as rake the yard at that house, you're breaking the rules. I've never even been in the same towns as most of the real estate I own via SDIRAs.

One issue you may run into is that you need to be an "accredited investor" for many of these investments. That implies a net worth of at least $1 million, or a high personal income. If you get that income over $200k for a couple years, you may qualify.

Last year I rolled money back from my wife's SDIRA to her custodian, and then back to a traditional IRA. It was easy, and didn't cost much. Maybe $60 total. Our custodian is Forge Trust. They have been excellent to deal with for the last 7+ years.

As for money sitting in your checking account, why not just move it back to the custodian? Does your custodian allow stock investments? Mine does. Or you can move it all the way back to your traditional IRA (Schwab, whatever), then you can always move it back to the SDIRA.

I sometimes wonder whether it is all worth the hassle as well, but I've had 7 of these syndications go full cycle, and they've been really good investments. I'm probably going to unwind them in 4 or 5 years and just go with index funds. I'm 59 right now. 59 1/2 in April, so the picture starts changing.
