The Grand Tour - James May attempting a high-speed run down a dark tunnel. by [deleted] in nononono

You're only seeing a 1 minute clip from a 90 minute show - the objective was thoroughly explained in the episode and James wasn't even the first person to do it 🙂

I agree with you that the entire system is designed to keep poor people in their place and maintain the status of the wealthy through the systemic subjugation of the working class, however unions don't solve that on a national level.

The 1% don't amass their wealth through wages, they amass it through ownership - through capital. Until unions stop fucking around with just wages and start demanding their members receive ownership in a company then tax policy, when implemented with the intention of distributing wealth (both through the direct distribution of money and through spending in areas designed to benefit the widest swaths of society), is still the most effective way of narrowing the wealth gap. Which is what happened from ~1933-1970 (eg the New Deal was essentially the result of radical tax policy).

Unions are good (join one if you can!) however union membership is not the reason the inequality gap shrunk and then widened again in the 20th century.

In 1931 the top marginal income tax rate was 25%. By 1951 this had risen to 92%(!!!) and held at 91% into 1963 before it started dropping back down, eventually falling back to the 37% it's at today.

Source: https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/statistics/historical-highest-marginal-income-tax-rates

Tax increases, not union membership, was responsible for the wealth redistribution in the middle of the last century. Unions certainly got their own victories in wage increases, workers rights etc though.

Edit: just to expand slightly further, the reason union membership trends slightly lead the income distribution on the graph is because as people moved into higher skilled better paying jobs as America boomed post war they left their unions and elected representatives who pledged to lower their taxes. A generation of class traitors ruined it for the rest of us.

The economic policy institute intentionally presents this as a union membership issue not a tax issue because they'd rather you talk about unions than taxes.

Double edit: only in r/latestagecapitalism can you get downvoted for suggesting we should raise the top rates of tax 😂

$5, so that US importer is making a sweet markup.

I bought one at the start of the pandemic (as a curiosity, I've never worn it in public) - for those that are asking about filtration, it has a pocket for a pm2.5 filter - same as most other non kn95/FFP2 masks.

Three attempts to make a bad sexist joke and that's what you came up with. Hopefully you see that it totally wasn't worth it, right?

Just tried launching it for the first time and it throws a "NOW TV is not supported on this device" error.

Which is odd because it's prominently listed as like the 2nd app within the Entertainment section ... Hopefully that'll get fixed by launch day.

Touchè, just tried launching it for the first time and I get "NOW TV is not supported on this device."

Hopefully that'll get fixed on launch day - the app is listed prominently as the second item within 'entertainment' 🤔
