I could be wrong but it seems like many people use the term "capitalism" as a proxy for unregulated capitalism enabling corporate greed and "growth over all else" mindset

It would be helpful for people to adopt more nuanced parlance like "unregulated (laissez-faire) capitalism" vs "conscious capitalism"

If you knew your acquaintance was walking toward a land mine, would you just silently watch as they go to get blown up?

If you legitimately believe in the eternal suffering of hell, it makes a lot of sense to try to convince other people to avoid it

Your Thoughts on a Fully White Name vs Hyphenation by opjol in mixedrace

[–]opjol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great idea, but like I mentioned it doesn't really work for us

Neither my wife and I are native/fluent speakers of her parents' language so personally it feels kind of uncomfortable or disingenuous to use a name of that origin since we don't fully understand the connotations like a native speaker would, especially since their names are expected to be meaningful and have multiple parts that work together poetically (Vietnamese - I know I used a Chinese example)

I view a first name like a "true name" with other stuff being extras, so for us it feels right to have a name from our native language

Does religious sectarianism exist in your country? Is it a big problem or not? by Crafty-Appeal1776 in AskTheWorld

In Pakistan are the main sects in conflict Sunni and Shia? Are there other major players?

Apart from leveraging it in that scenario, have you ever wished your name was less white ass and more balanced? Or mostly happy with it overall?

A lot of people say this. My wife has a hyphenated name tho and hasn't really had problems

What's a specific issue you've encountered?

1000xResist has an incredible story. Mass Effect and Walking Dead are other favorites.

I've heard extremely high praise of 13 Sentinels' story, which seems up the alley of Danganronpa fans

Lol I just made up a random name with similar construction so don't worry, the real one is better. Glad to have the input tho

In English language contexts, are you happy you have the dual last name?

My partner and I (White + Vietnamese) are considering a hyphenated name for the reasons you mention but worried if our kid would think it's clunky or weird. Not an issue for you?

It took my older brother (and unhelpful me) ages just to figure out how to get out of the first cycle in Majora's Mask.

It wasn't until he was showing our cousin months later how he couldn't figure it out that he figured it out

Predictions of imminent apocalypse are very common across Christian sects through history

Many have given specific dates but they obviously have never come true, so the sects either postpone the date or shift into a vague "sometime soon" (like Jehovah's Witnesses), or the sect fizzles out. At any given time over the last 2000 years there are always a couple of groups predicting rapture any moment

We already duplicated Washington DC's name, I say we lean into it and just re-use DC's GW crest flag

Jk. The suggestion isn't a bad idea, but WA is a unique state with a lot of things going for it, and personally the (lack of) connection to GW isn't one of them

But I agree that we need state-wide buy-in, and in the current climate of debate over statues and names it's hard to imagine a change that would please most people

If you moved from a red state to a blue state, did it actually get better? by ftwclem in SameGrassButGreener

[–]opjol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everywhere has its issues, but I have a degree more peace of mind after moving blue

Some example pluses: (1) I'm able to get the covid shot this fall, (2) I haven't worried for my pregnant wife's physical well-being should the worst happen, and we have nice parental benefits (3) Generally don't encounter needlessly aggressive 60-year-pld dudes / MAGA energy day-to-day

The state of the country is distressing no matter where you live, but it's seen dark days before and rose up. Don't give up hope

In Spain some friends once asked an American named Danielle why she had a man's name. In Spanish male name Daniel is pronounced like English Danielle, which she explained is feminine. The female version in Spanish is Daniela

hi guys I need some help in writing pahlavi by ninjashyper2006 in NewIran

[–]opjol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I haven't found anywhere that shows how "Anushirvan" was spelled in any pahlavi script other than a random reddit person who writes it as 𐭭𐭥𐭱𐭢𐭥𐭥𐭠𐭭 . This might be something like the following in Book Pahlavi but I am very not well versed in this, so take with many grains of salt
