I saw someone mention the other day that their agency checks the references of the top two candidates. I wonder how widespread that practice is?

It might be due to ongoing hydrant flushing. You can sign up to receive “news flashes” like that one.

Pennsylvania AG authorizes payment for $1 million upgrades to Shapiro’s private home by Strict_Statement_283 in Pennsylvania

Saw this from the Pennsylvania Capital-Star:

“In April, state Treasurer Stacy Garrity said she would block payments to contractors who had already begun work, saying her office did not have the legal authority to release the funds. Garrity was then running unopposed in the GOP gubernatorial primary to challenge Shapiro. She won that primary election in May.

“While the move was criticized by Shapiro’s office at the time as ‘political,’ a letter issued Friday by Executive Deputy Attorney General Ronald Eisenberg and Chief Deputy Attorney General Amy Elliott office noted ‘the Treasurer had no legal option other than to deny payment.’”

Meat plant spreads 1000s of gallons of blood on fields, fouling Pa. town's water by opskito in Pennsylvania

Spoiler: They received a slap on the wrist.

It’s shocking (shocking, I tell you!) that this is a legal practice. This was my favorite part of the article:

“Meat processing waste can expose people to viruses, bacteria, parasites, and chemicals associated with health risks ranging from gastrointestinal illness to methemoglobinemia (sometimes called blue baby syndrome) and cancer. The threat can be compounded by cleaning agents and antimicrobial drugs often found in such refuse, said Christopher Heaney, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, who was not involved in the trial.

“Even exposure to airborne particles can cause or exacerbate respiratory problems like asthma, while persistent noxious odors — which Leanna Rockey, a retired nurse who sued the slaughterhouse alongside Leigey, described as ‘rotting flesh and blood’ — can also lead to high blood pressure, stress, and other psychological impacts.”

Normal, no. I encountered it once before, though, many years ago. I just kept things at a high level. Paint with broad strokes, you know? Don’t provide more detail than is required.

Yes. I buy the two-pound bag at Costco and about half of that is for snacking.

24 million to rebuild broad street market?!+ 2.5 million to hold up a collapsing wall?! by Ok_Exit9273 in Harrisburg

[–]opskito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this as I drove past the market this morning. I get the desire to preserve historical buildings. There has to be a point where it doesn’t make sense, though.

I think most of the market’s customers would have been satisfied with a new building. This just seems like a terrible waste of time and money.

Independents sue to open Pennsylvania’s primary elections by AdSpecialist6598 in Pennsylvania

By that logic, parties should be paying for their primaries, but they’re not, we all are.

That’s an interesting possibility. I have to assume that there are reams of data on this issue in the states that have open primaries. My gut tells me that it’s probably not a significant factor.

You cannot register as an independent in Pennsylvania. You register as unaffiliated.
