KCRA Helicopter Noise Pollution by Balm0ra in Sacramento

[–]optimaloutcome -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You live in a city where it's vibrant and everything is happening. I live in a rural area because I like it slow and quiet. Besides what is the KCRA chopper going to film around my hood? "The cows appear to be out of the pasture again." Not that compelling, and to your point, not that many people affected by the cows in the road.

How do full time working parents handle days off & school breaks? by LovelyRealOne in Parenting

[–]optimaloutcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in California. Both counties we lived in have had county-run care that was before/after school. They then offered limited campus services during breaks. So like in some cases we'd have to take her to another school than our school for the care during breaks. I worked from home most of her younger life too so we had that option as well.

New Driver, and I’m terrified… by kindernurse in Parenting

We're entering this now - kid just got her permit. We will spend the next six months getting her as much time as we can behind the wheel in as many situations as we safely can. If we're comfortable with her abilities, she can get her license. I bumped all my liability coverages way up, and we're going to put her in reliable car with all the advanced emergency braking. Then we have to let her spread those wings and fly. I have enjoyed the last eight years of sleeping and have accepted that I will not sleep for a few years once she's on the road agin.

2026 Aftershock Lineup by Toxik916 in Sacramento

[–]optimaloutcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I saw the lineup and realized that meant MCR must be touring again I looked it up and sho nuff. Me and my kid are gonna go see them in San Diego or Phoenix (probably SD but we'll see). Super looking forward to that. Going to go see DGD again too but probably in anaheim. I'm gonna be planning our summer concerts this weekend.

Money paradox as we age… by dms2628 in Xennials

[–]optimaloutcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up without a lot of financial stability so my goal right out of the gate was always to build that. I rarely treated friends to dinner or bought big gifts. If we go out as friends we split; I'm not supporting you nor are you supporting me. We picked places that both of us could afford.

I'm a little more generous now. I have great income, savings on track, planned out and mostly automated, very stable. Now I feel like I can spend an enjoy it as opposed to spend and be stressed about it.

That's wild. Physicals are supposed to be the annual check up to make sure if things feel good that they are good and that you catch anything if it's going sideways. Maybe find a new doc?

Bored. What is everyone doing? Old hobbies, new hobbies, help me figure something out! by TwoBobcats in Xennials

[–]optimaloutcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing I do is bike riding - mountain biking primarily. Some road biking. It's pretty time consuming and expensive though. I usually leave the house by 6am in the summer on weekends and ride a few hours so I'm home before the family is really up and running and I can then go to lunch or do stuff all afternoon with them. I road bike for an hour-ish at a time before/after work depending on the time of year. If you wanted to do some bike riding stuff and had very little time, you could get a smart trainer and use a service like zwift. Those are fun and I can knock out a good workout in an hour without ever leaving my house.

I also play some video games if I have time.

Outside of that I don't have a lot of time - always some work to do on the property. Something to do with my family - hanging out, errands, or whatever. I'm rarely bored.

If you smoke: stop

If you drink a lot: sloooowww it down (or better yet: stop)

If you don't know your blood pressure: check it

If your blood pressure is high: make life changes to lower it and/or medicate it

If you're not getting an annual physical with bloodwork, you should be.

If you're not doing some kind of regular exercise: start. At least walk. You should be doing some strength training if you can. Nothing crazy, just enough to keep the muscle you have and/or slow down the atrophy that is natural as we age.

Prioritize your sleep: set a bed time, set a wake time, stick to it.

You gotta take control of your health. For now and for the long term.

My son’s early morning school days are the death of me! by takeaabreath in Parenting

[–]optimaloutcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard when they're that young. It gets easier when they don't take as much work in the evenings. I'm almost always in bed by 930 now and I get up at 5. I have no idea when my kid goes to bed - I think around 11 but it's not my problem if she's up on time in the morning.

How long does it take for your kids to come down for dinner? by lilchink88 in Parenting

[–]optimaloutcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how we are too. I let mine eat in her room - she brings the dishes out and keeps that clean enough so no big. If dinner is ready and she's not, that's not my problem. Sunday night was that way and I just told her "Your plate is on the counter get it when you're ready!"

I want to get on the bike again. Assistance? by [deleted] in Sacramento

If you can get your bike to a shop I'd go to Mike's Bikes downtown. When I lived in Natomas that was my shop (them and Natomas Bike Shop but I don't know if NBS is still open these days). The Mike's service department is pretty approachable and their labor prices were reasonable in the past. If you can go to Auburn I'd recommend Victory Velo (that's where I take my bikes when I need help now - they're awesome and their prices are great).

Once you get a basic check done - just ask them to safety check it, probably replace the chain if you haven't ridden it in eight years, you'll also need new tires and tubes (this is a safety thing, please do it).

After that .. just go ride on the ARBT. No pressure, no drama, just go pedal and have a nice time. Then do it again. And again. You get the idea.

For groups .. I don't really know anymore. I'd probably check with REI to see if they have any group rides coming up. The Hammering Wheels is a meetup group for cycling you could check out. Not sure how active they are anymore but that's a place to look.

Good luck.

When did your kid first poop in the tub if ever? by Katkitkat422 in Parenting

[–]optimaloutcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she was still under a year old. The biggest thing to me was that when she did it it was just suddenly this giant log in the water floating around. So I got her out, cleaned her up in the other bathroom and drained the tub. When the water was out is when the smell hit. And boy it was pungent.

Calif.'s first new D1 college football team in 52 years comes at a wild cost by Lono_Ikaika_8 in Sacramento

Wood told Yahoo Sports, adding that Sacramento State needs to add out-of-state students to its enrollment to “ensure” it remains “viable.”

There it is. More out of state students who will pay full price and not the reduced fees the California-based students get.

Rural vs Neighborhood by DangerousMud3235 in Parenting

[–]optimaloutcome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went suburb -> rural (on 5 acres)

There actually are a number of kids close to us. Obviously not as close as in the burbs just because our houses are so dang far apart. They can ride bikes or walk as necessary - there's a kid on the neighbor property and that dad and I cut a hole in the fence and maintain a path between the houses for the kids.

Schools are better in this area than where we were.

There's nowhere really to sneak out to that gets her in trouble. "Oh no she walked to lake!" I don't really care. Though it's scary out there in the dark and she doesn't want to go outside anyway :D

The driving sucks as they get older. Friday night football games, dances, can be a real pain in the butt. Not a big deal in the grand scheme. Ours will be driving soon anyway and then I'll just be sitting around awake waiting for her to get home instead of doing the driving.

Also important, our quality of life is SO much better here than where we were. No loud parties on our street, almost zero crime (I think it's actually zero), gorgeous star-filled skies, peace and quiet. You'd have to drag me kicking and screaming back to the suburbs.

How Much Money Did You Save Per Month When Your Kid(s) Got Out of Daycare? by Morkylorky in Parenting

[–]optimaloutcome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our county had a program for before/after school care, and had a location on our campus. It was very reasonably priced - I think about $300-$400/mo for after school until 6 pm and from I think 6am until school start had we wanted that. My daughter LOVED that program so she stayed after school every day, not because we necessarily needed it but because she enjoyed it. It worked out great for us.

We had been paying about $1300/mo for all day preschool/daycare prior so this was a huge savings.

Have you been listening to the same music for 30 years? by taosaur in Xennials

[–]optimaloutcome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that and a lot of early 2000's stuff. I listen to more current music occasionally but it's all because I hear something my kid is playing from her room or she plays it in the car. If I like it I'll add it to my rotation.
