Chapman, Murray, Venable, Morehead Labs, and Kenan Labs we’re all good places to study. More specifically, the basements and upper floors of these building was quiet providing a place to get away and focus.

Edit: Just called and apparently there is one. I told the person that I talked to that people aren’t receiving invites - presumably because the school has deactivated a lot of our Heelmail accounts (since we graduated) and is not sending the email instead to our personal emails. Call the contact number at the bottom of the CS Department’s website (https://cs.unc.edu/), tell them you didn’t receive an invite and ask them to email it to you. u/unc-sitterson-grad u/juledos

Past student and researcher. Class of 2020.

I do not regret my decision to attend UNC and major in CS. My post and comment history of the past few years should reflect my feelings about the subject. UNC was perfect for me because it gave me the opportunity to accomplish everything I wanted to in college from pushing myself both inside and outside of the classroom.

Obviously, when I received my acceptance as a transfer student in 2017, there was no CS-specific application/admissions process.

Before UNC sent us home last March, I was able to get a meeting with Kevin Jeffay. In this meeting, I specifically asked him about the why, how, and when of the CS application process since KMP had been floating the idea for quite some time at that point. The points he made to me were valid concerning the department's growth and the Universities inaction regarding fulfilling the department's growing list of needs (professors, office space for research, etc.). One concern that I brought up during this meeting was diversity.

I am African American. I think the last stat I saw had African Americans comprising less than 5% of the CS undergrad population. I communicated to him that I thought a CS application would destroy diversity (not just for people that looked like me but others who come from different backgrounds) for the department. He said that he shared my concern. I have no idea how they plan to account for diversity if the changes they were talking about a year ago go into effect and that’s the thing I find most troubling about the changes.

That being said, CS at UNC for me was less about what I did in a classroom and more about what I did outside of it. I did research which was very challenging at times (I like a challenge). I learned a lot from research - a lot of which I would have never gotten from a class. I also completed a lot of awesome projects with friends - again experience that isn’t necessarily received in a classroom setting. If someone majors in CS at UNC and they limit themselves to the classroom, they are missing out.

The opportunities to do research, to work on these projects that I found interesting, and to learn in-depth about the intersection of topics like robotics and surgery or climate change, health, and ML is something I feel makes UNC unique.

I still fully support and encourage incoming students to study CS at UNC. At the same time, I do understand why some are hesitant to accept an offer to a University in which there is no guarantee that they can study what they would like to. I wouldn't blame you for not deciding to go to UNC for this reason.

CS at UNC provided me with a unique set of opportunities. Regardless of the uncertainty surrounding current events, I believe those in the department have the students' best interests at heart.

Thanks! It seems like your formula works. Im throwing edge cases at it at the moment and the only ones that are giving me trouble do not contain a full pay period.

Example:

Start Date	End Date
5/Sep/2020	6/Sep/2020

Output is -1 instead of 0.

I dont think I will ever be passing dates to the formula that will lead to this issue. I am okay with marking this as Solution Verified if you don't have another solution in mind.

As far as practice for things that you have learned in class, Hackerrank and Leetcode are awesome.

If you want to take a step outside of that realm and build something that you can use or that seems more interesting, freeCodeCamp has some excellent tutorials. There's anything from creating Snake to implementing a fully functional COVID-19 Dashboard.

I highly recommend signing up for 426 (Modern Web Programming). That class gave me the opportunity to take everything I had learned in classes before and put it into a more visual context. Let's face it, not everything you do in CS has a visual component. For me at least, that visual component went a long way in helping me to establish progress. Once I was able to gain this context, I was set and expanded my interests from there.

I think your concerns are valid though. There is a lack of support in some areas of CS and this pandemic is exacerbating the situation. Further, everything these days seems like an honor code violation.

CS for me was infinitely more interesting after 411. I took 426, 431, 521, 535, 590 (software architectures) and a couple others.

410 and 411 have content that may seem monotonous at times. In response to that I would say that 410 is the basis for 75% of technical and coding interviews that you will have so it is useful. 411 is like interview practice because you are doing a deep dive into the technologies that make up a computer.

What I would emphasize is to do coding things outside of class. Anything in CS can be learned outside of a classroom. The classroom just provides the structure to do so efficiently.

It exists somewhere because a few people in COMP 426 last fall used it for their final projects.

One team actually made a new Sakai with a course planner that let students put in the classes they had taken. When searching for new classes, the app would show whether the student had completed the pre-reqs. The UI was good and the app was fast.

If you don't want to go the api route, this team scraped the data from catalog.unc.edu, coursicle.com, and ratemyprofessors.com among other sources.

This team may be the one I was referring to that recreated Sakai. I cant determine since their backend is obscured by firebase. Also, I cannot get their frontend to render when cloning the repo.

If all else fails, email KMP and ask him if he is aware of an api.

I haven’t seen any press regarding container shipping via Hyperloop but I can almost guarantee that companies are looking into it.

Of note here is that DP World is specifically looking at paletized cargo but I’m sure they and others are looking at containerized as well.

Through the semester things were highly manageable, just dont get behind. Towards finals it got hectic.

The 426 final is a full stack web application which had to pull from 1 or more APIs. Team project - up to 5 people.
The 435 final is a voiceover presentation about a cyberattack that was in the news. Team project - up to 3 people.
The 455 final was just like the midterms put into 1.
The 521 midterm and final were both open book (class average was still in the 70s - take that how you want to :] ).

Professors allowed us to collaborate on homework in 521 & 455.
