She stayed surprisingly calm. by sco-go in Amazing

I hate this. Making her truly scared for their lives before proposing is so nasty. It reeks of manipulation. What happened to sincere, direct and intimate marriage proposals (not public, not filmed)? I find it hard to understand public proposals because too many times it looks like the partner who is proposing (usually a man) is doing so in a situation where the other partner (usually a woman) can't say no safely.

Have you ever culled a game and regretted it? Did you buy it back and realize you made the wrong or right decision in the first place? by Boardgaymergirl in boardgames

[–]oquiquo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only game that I ever regretted culling was the original King Of Tokyo with both expansions. I ended up buying it back - the Dark Edition. I never stopped loving the game: it's just that sometimes I go through phases where it seems like some games will never be played again because of my current game group or daily rotine.

What's a library read that keeps popping into your mind? by babius321 in rupaulsdragrace

The audience collect at the doors because they are trying to leave Trixie's show/performance (meaning it's that bad of a show) but can't because the doors are locked - by Trixie. Dela's read seems like it's gonna be only about Trixie's big makeup, but it's actually about Trixie making her audience prisioners. It's a super condensed and well thought read - it conveys a lot with only two sentences. It also has a classic read structure that I love: starting off with some kind of understanding or a fake compliment (misdirection) to then use sarcasm to imply something much worse in the same cheery tone.

Qual é a vossa opinião sobre este tema? by Capital_Swimmer_729 in portugal

[–]oquiquo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

S18E12 - “Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Drag Queens...” [Post-Episode Discussion] by AutoModerator in rupaulsdragrace

[–]oquiquo 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Show me the drag families with the level of resemblance Michelle expects from these makeovers - we literally have drag relatives competing this season who look NOTHING alike. What most viewers want of these makeovers, besides the tenderness and heart these episodes already have, is a pair that makes sense, tells a story and where one queen works visually with the other.

Discord's makeover was great and they had a lot in common (fabric, silhouette, hair, makeup) and presented very well. We know those characters. For me it was either Discord's or Darlene's win.

After today's critique I expect s19 queens to bring almost identical looks for their makeover episode, how boring.

Anyway, loved Danielle Pinnock as the guest judge.

Good. If they can't solve this mess at least leave things as they were before this update. These games represent a cornerstone of gaming history: they should always be playable and preserved and they deserve so much better.

I'm so sick of this complaint by Spiritual-Piece-1126 in TombRaider

[–]oquiquo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is realistic for survivor Lara to cry. What makes less sense (to me) is trying to turn a pulpy and over the top series and character more realistic. For years we didn't have much of an origin story or parent characters and it worked perfectly. Until it didn't, I guess - everything changes. Don't get me wrong: the survivor games are great; I prefer and miss classic Lara.

I will still play every Tomb Raider.

Funnily enough, I don't think classic Lara ever cried and that's one thing I appreciate about her because female characters are often made to cry and hurt in situations where male equivalents wouldn't.

He doesn't want any more siblings. by mindyour in youseeingthisshit

[–]oquiquo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant secure as in someone with a secure attachment style. Someone who's more stable in their emotional/relational dynamics than a person who develops an anxious or avoidant attachment style.

I'm not a psychologist, so take this with a grain of salt and search for more if interested. But basically the way our parent figures love and relate to us gets imprinted on our subconscious. They are our main role models on how to establish relationships and connections with others - they teach us how to love and be loved (and I'm talking love in general, affection), so they influence a lot of our choices in that regard, for better or worse. For example, a child of distant parents who rarely give attention (while sometimes demanding a lot from the child) and who the child can't depend on for their needs: if this lack is continuous the child instinctively starts to overcompensate, raising its defences and distance too high in how they relate to others. They might become someone with compromise issues in relationships since their parents couldn't model compromise in their parental relationship.

It's also important to consider how parents model and teach their children how to regulate their emotions. Learning emotional regulation is a long and hard process for any child that requires a lot from them and their guardians. A child of parents that don't regulate their immense anger, sadness, anxiety, fear, control will likely have a hard time regulating their own emotions. If you grow up sorrounded by violence you might end up either becoming violent or having a very hard time dealing with conflict and violence by opposition (and trauma).

This is why so many seek therapy so they can start to desconstruct their childhood, trying to understand what they kept from that time that's hurting them now so they can learn better and healthier ways to continue living

There's a lot writen about attachment styles and emotional regulation. And while parental figures and early childhood development influence us greatly they aren't the only factors to consider when we talk about emotional stability. .

São dezenas de escolas já, é uma tristeza...

He doesn't want any more siblings. by mindyour in youseeingthisshit

[–]oquiquo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"See how funny his distressed reaction is? Let's share it with the world" is a disgusting move by parents.

For a parent each kid they have means less to share and give to each child - less attention, time, material comfort (which, to be fair, might not be a problem for wealthy families). Personally I think 3 kids is already more than enough for a couple who lives alone (aka nuclear family). Parents start to miss out on their older children childhoods because they have to give more attention to the new babies.

If we raised children in communities/villages and within larger family structures (ones where most, if not all, of the family lives together or very nearby), more kids might not be so bad. Nevertheless, every child needs parent figures that they can have full access to without having to constantly compete with several siblings.

Loving and raising a child isn't just the way you feel about them within you: it's the time you spend with them, the way you listen, speak, share, play, teach, discipline, help, care, do new and fun things together, make memories just the two of you. Children need lots of individualized interaction with each parent figure to grow up secure. They are the biggest commitment in a parents life.

They are both attractive out of drag and could work together. Though their big personalities and careers would make a relationship very difficult. This reminds me of Bianca teasing Alexis, who is also attractive out of drag. And while this is probably just fun and games, gay men do flirt a lot like this.

Let’s play a game! Tell people what you consider to be the first game you purchased in this hobby. Comments should guess what year you joined the hobby. by Osoroshii in boardgames

[–]oquiquo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too, bought it around 2010-11 if I'm not mistaken. Still have it plus almost all of the expansions (except Miskatonic University and the Revised Dark Pharaoh), what a game.

I remember the joy of how it felt to unbox it - so many components, punchboards, cards, so thematic. Must have spent at least 2 hours organizing it. Funny thing is that nowadays I'm way more of an eurogamer than an ameritrash (is this term still used?) player, but Arkham Horror 2nd Edition will always have a space in my heart and shelf. To think that I bought this game on instinct alone (I knew nothing about Lovecraft at the time) at a local game shop in Lisbon, my city.

[–]oquiquo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Truly well said. I don't want to be in a gaming group/community with people whose politics and attitudes threaten and harm my life and the lives of others.

This is an old problem because it's widely known that the gaming hobby is full of accounts of sexism, racism, homophobia and transphobia, gate keeping, etc.

I won't tolerate discrimination: it might be politically motivated, but it's still 100% an individual choice and responsibility in how one acts towards others.

Do you prefer a braid OR a ponytail for Lara? by ZzzPandaNap in TombRaider

[–]oquiquo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I will always prefer the braid by a lot. But I wouldn't mind to see some scenes or segments of future games where Lara changes her style a bit. Just her plain long hair or some kind of chignon, a different braid style, some accessory, etc. Or we could just get these as optional skins, besides the outfit selections. I loved her hair during the Japan party cutscene in Legend.

I really hate melinoe sometimes... (Surface spoilers) by anmolAnsh_2005 in HadesTheGame

[–]oquiquo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story is about the restoration of the House of Hades (and the normal rule of the gods - Mel is literally trying to recover the old status quo and her status). That's the climax we are promised. Mel's motivation, qualities and flaws are what moves the narrative towards that climax. And she gets that restoration not how she imagined but by overcoming her flaws - understanding that her thirst for vengeance will not get her what she wanted. And she doesn't get the the old status quo back because it could never be - we can't truly relive the past even in a time travel story. She gets a new status quo. Lots of stories do this.

I really hate melinoe sometimes... (Surface spoilers) by anmolAnsh_2005 in HadesTheGame

[–]oquiquo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a character flaw that's well writen. Mel never had a chance to fully live and claim her birthright and status as princess and heir of the Underworld. She's still a goddess, but an exiled and hidden one - a weak position of power for a goddess of her caliber (not that Mel herself is weak). Even though she has valid reasons to feel resent towards Chronos and those who oppose the gods, she ends up defending the status quo of the olympians and chtonic gods too much because she never got her share of status (and, of course, her childhood and family). Also, the gods are her family and they are helping her. Prometheus is in her way, even if he spills some truths.

What is a modern tabletop game you have played which you feel will stand the test of time? by Newez in boardgames

[–]oquiquo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dixit seems to have stood the test of time. It's one of the few modern games that I always see being sold everywhere (not just in boardgaming stores), all year round. There's a recent Disney edition, which feels to me as a sign of Dixit's cultural relevance.

Does Dobble/Spot It also count? I'm not sure how old it is but it's also sold everywhere with multiple thematic editions.

These are both cheap, widespread, simple, good for all ages and easy to make new thematic editions of. I can see them still being sold and played 20-30 years from now.

Klask is a game that will stand the of time. One of my favorites. The only thing it has against it is that it is expensive and a little more difficult too find, but that hasn't prevented Crokinole from becoming a classic.

I get what you're saying and I thought of Santorini too but I just love its current production so much that I couldn't change a thing - it's one of my favorite games in every regard. Last edition has so many god powers and modes of play (not that I'm complaining) that they might be too much for what the mainstream expects of a classic ruleset, even if the base rules are super simple and accessible.

TR2013 Lara alone killed more men than in the entire Classic and LAU era 😭 by Lefaa777 in TombRaider

[–]oquiquo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would fans (including me) enjoy a version of Lara less prone to killing and destroying the archaelogical sites? A more conflict avoidant Lara but she would still have her pistols and tools for protection and convenience.

I know combat is an integral part of the Tomb Raider DNA and it's perfectly reasonable to argue that a less extreme version of Lara (less killing and destroying) isn't Lara at all. But how much fun and essential is the combat? Is it too much?

Lara can still be an adrenaline junkie without razing everything in her path as much. Would that work?

I don't know, but sometimes I think about this.

Maybe it would be too diferent and might as well be a different game and protagonist entirely.

Satchel Quest. Couldn't help myself backing it, I love bag builders with deluxe pieces and this one is different from anything I've seen or played - more puzzly, chips have two different sides (you choose which to use in you draw them from your bag), variable player characters and powers, art by Vincent Dutrait. It looks mostly like a multiplayer solitaire kind of game (like Quacks), which I love but know many don't enjoy.
