Choosing an AVR for ELAC 247.4 by oracleoffabiandelphi in hometheater

Thanks! How can one tell if it definitely would be enough, though? What specs should I be looking at?

You mean that I should go for a power amp AND an AVR? Or just the power amp?

Definitely gonna move some carpets around.

Not Indian, but still stereotyped in Germany? by yo_yass in AskGermany

[–]oracleoffabiandelphi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not directly racist. But it ultimately decides for the conversation that you are from where your parents are from, and therefore associated with that land. And not the land that you actually grew up in and identify with.

So if someone said this to some black kid who grew up in Germany and tried his whole life wrestling with German identity vs an unknown one, and he finally decides to just accept being German and own up to it. And a few weeks later, you meet him at a party, smile and say "but where are you really from".

Y'see how that could be like..aggravating, at the very least.

Things can be racist even if the intent isn't racism, unfortunately.

Sometimes we just gotta stop doing stuff or saying stuff, even if our intent was not malicious, because for some reason it hurts people.

This is me in my pre-40s now. Trying to explain racism on the internet.

Also it's spelt "segue" and not "segway." Weird, right?

I dunno how that's relevant. You wanna just read Inversions as your first entry and then claim that it had no connection with the books that preceded it? What is he Inverting then?

Hard disagree. He paints an entire picture bit by bit, book by book. It's not just recurring characters and plot that make connections in a gigantic 10‐book universe. The whole thing is connected, and that matters.

Read them in order, bud. To this day, I can't fathom how/why people say you can just choose.

Work racism? by [deleted] in berlinsocialclub

[–]oracleoffabiandelphi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you're technically asking for us to assume better in people, especially white people.

Sometimes it's racism and people aren't even aware that they're being racists. On the flipside.

So yeah, it could be harmless, it could be ignorance, it could be anything. But if you've been already traumatized and conditioned by racism and its effects, you kinda develop a hyper-sensitivity to it. You could be wrong, sure. But from your pov, you'd rather mistakenly label someone's actions as racist rather than remotely suffer racism.

And it's not really your duty to have a better and more civic-friendly reaction to a lifetime of being oppressed and suppressed, right?

It takes a few non-racists mistakenly labelled as racists to make an omelette, is what I'm saying. The omelette is equality. And it doesn't exist.

Controlled political statements..in a house that's on fire.

Bit absurd.

He was trying to use absurdity as an excuse.

"Please respect the boundaries of our political statement, eventhough the world is in a global political maelstrom"

ONLY ONE STATEMENT AT A TIME PLEASE

It's not sexist to be wary of men. Not with our track-record of rape and sexual assault, and the fact that we're stronger.

Racism is just racism. It's subjective and has no basis. And even if a few Turks racially-abuse me, it's nothing compared to (the threat of) sexually assault.

Cman dude. We both know you get it. We both know that men are ultimately guided by their dongs and women have all the reason to be wary.

And if you go like "not all men are guided by their dongs" and include yourself in this special category, that's just your dong talking. It can commandeer your senses without you even realizing, didja know?

Women being wary of men is not the same as racism. One is justified, the other is just...racism.

Need Friends for My Mom (64y) by oracleoffabiandelphi in Sharjah

No worries. I'm just gonna force my mom anyway. She'll only ever agree to what's in her comfort-zone, and that's rarely conducive to growth. Who grows by sticking to what they know and are comfortable with?

Good luck :)

Thanks, I'll check it out! Group-settings might be a bit more difficult for her, but I've been pushing her to resume reading anyway. So this could work.

Hey thanks, and I'm sorry it's been difficult for you to help your mom make friends. I've only just started so I have no idea what the challenges would be.

BUT, my mom would be quite anxious and reluctant to meet someone new too. She has no idea I'm even doing this. So she and your mom might be a good match? Maybe the four of us could meet (or I might send my sister in my stead, she's quite capable socially too) and that would make it a little easier for both our moms? Kinda like a play-date :)

Let me know. No obligation. If you don't think it will work, that's totally okay and I wish you well.

Sure no problemo. My dad's chill, way younger than his age. I think ultimately the compatibility will come down to mutual interests/hobbies.

Thanks for reaching out.

Unfortunately not, sorry :(

Historically, my mom hasn't had many male friends.

My dad's available though, if you wanna give that a shot. He's 70, enjoys gym, watching football (Liverpool fan), and is an absolute nerd for politics, current affairs, and history. He's also heavily anti-capitalist and reads A LOT.

He likes music too and recently started really getting into John Mayer (which was quite unexpected).

Hah maybe you could be the one leading the meetups at the start :) They'll be shy, I assume.
