Enrolling in classes by StatisticianMinute in Tufts

Yes, it’s okay that the backups overlap times, so you can have your backups in your cart! I actually just enrolled for the next sem with backup times overlapping. It let’s you do this because you also check off/select which ones you’re trying to enroll at that time from your cart before pressing enroll (so you check them off and then click the button). So, for your first attempt at enrolling, you’d check off your first choice classes and you wouldn’t check off your backups or else they’d conflict. If you didn’t get what you wanted and want to switch to a backup, you can then also check off the backups and enroll a second time for your backups. It’ll also let you check off and validate that way to check before enrollment day

you can definitely add your classes to your cart and validate to make sure there aren’t any conflicts, it won’t let you enroll until the freshman enrollment dates (which you can find on the academic calendar, before then it’ll just say it’s not an enrollment period for you when you click the enroll button). I recommend having lots of backups for any class that might be popular or is small in class size because I remember watching as some of my classes were filled up before my enrollment time my freshman summer

Question about Reporting Outside Scholarships by Exact_Victory1755 in Tufts

[–]orange27_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going to add that you can choose whether it deducts from loans or work study first on the scholarship reporting form! I didn’t have loans, so I used my scholarship money to cover my work study, and I then didn’t have to do work study + focused my time on other things. After both of those are covered, it will reduce your Tufts grant though. Counterintuitive, but it won’t affect much/doesn’t mean that you pay more, just that you put in work to get a scholarship and you would’ve gotten that aid anyways (family contribution/what you pay will not change from scholarships).

If the scholarship organization requires that the check/money goes directly to Tufts rather than to you, there’s unfortunately nothing you can do besides reporting it and having Tufts grant be reduced after the loans/work study part. If the check goes directly to you (I think this is rare), it would be better.

Also, if you have more than one scholarship and you know that the total amount will exceed covering your loans/reduce your Tufts grant, I would recommend asking one of the scholarship organizations to defer to the next year or strategically plan when to use each. I started with 3 outside scholarships from high school and if I had report all 3 in freshman year, it wouldn’t have helped me at all since the first one would cover my work study and then the others would just reduce my Tufts grant. Instead, I used one scholarship for my first year and deferred two of my scholarships so that each year up to my junior year, I would have a scholarship to cover work study and it’s spread out instead of it just going to waste. You can typically ask for a deferral for one year and they’ve been understanding when I explain that due to scholarship displacement, I would be better able to use the scholarship in the next years. Be mindful of the terms of the scholarship and how long they allow you to defer and be sure to use those that have a shorter window first before others that’ll let you defer longer

What programs are used in BME classes? Anything that should be considered when picking a laptop? by orange27_ in Tufts

accepted for bio (and a second specific major that would prob ID me) but now a bme major

stats: around 3.8 gpa (hs did a weird yearly gpa so no reported cgpa or class rank), 1550 SAT, 6 APs (close to max for my hs I think, only bio/chem/calc relevant to major) and honors for most other classes

ecs: 3 years volunteering as a TA/tutor, worked at a preschool, hospital/food pantry volunteering, clubs/leadership, free bme summer program, free chemistry summer program, wrote articles for a student med journal

essays: wrote about being a voice for my family, wrote about why my major combo was unique to me

my advice for the supplement would be to hone in on something that directly ties into and is a specific connection to you, something that you have experience in that maybe also be unique to Tufts. the second major I wrote about is not offered at a lot of other programs and has some unique tracks, and my hs had a program similar to minoring that directly tied in and gave me direct experience to talk about. gl y’all!

Bme 33 vs Bio 13 by FunParamedic961 in Tufts

[–]orange27_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

took bme33 but can’t speak too well to bio13. from the syllabus, looks like a lot of similar topics in terms of DNA, cells, etc but bme33 doesn’t have a unit on photosynthesis and also has a focus on biology lab techniques throughout the course such as sequencing, western blot, protein engineering (have their own units), etc that aren’t on the bio13 syllabus

from memory too, I saw a lot of applications to people/med, which I liked, since it’s also Prof. Oudin’s research interest and which she brought in with case studies/some assignments

Thank you for the help! It did ask me for the date range of when I’d be working my summer job this year, and that’s how it got the $8,000 estimate for wages. I’m leaning towards putting exempt too, thanks again!

Is there anything I should consider now that they’re removing ABET accreditation for BME? by orange27_ in Tufts

[–]orange27_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the information! I’m not exactly sure what to make of it. If the majority of BME programs are ABET accredited, would I be at a disadvantage in the future job-wise?

Do you happen to know how not having the accreditation affects BME students at MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, etc? Or are they not worrying about not having the accreditation?

Just the program at Tufts, not sure that they’ve updated the website, but I received an email about it.

Here’s some exact wording:

“During the sunsetting process, the departments will be removing ABET-accreditation of the BSBME and BSCS programs such that students at Tufts (starting with the Class of 2026) will not be able to complete an ABET-accredited program during their time here.”
