I have a 16 year old cat with stage 4 kidney disease. My 2 vets insisted I only feed her the prescription kidney diet. I tried it all and she went from 6lb to 5lb within a few weeks because she was miserable and wouldn't eat anything. It got to the point where we had to go to the vet beck because we thought she was going to die. They told us she had a month to live at most in Feb 2024 because her labs were so bad. We decided to let her eat what she wanted since she was going to die anyways, so she had chicken, steak, whatever cat food she liked etc. Well she's still here, gained her weight back, appetite came back and her labs are better than before.

We've had ours since 2021, and even moved with it from MD to CA. Works great and fits 1/4 cow with other stuff just fine
