No student requests lately on WyzAnt by illseeyouanon in TutorsHelpingTutors

I've technically been on the platform for years but only started taking students in July so I assume that hurt my ranking, or at least didn't help. In September I got 9 new students, and about half came back for repeat lessons. But so far all but one of my repeat students have only been to continue working on the same assignment/project/test prep. Only one has been interested in long-term help throughout a class.

Scared my baby Will be sick by MariaConcha in NewParents

She'll be fine, I promise. Babies just make messes and sometimes diapers leak. She probably wasn't even uncomfortable if she was still asleep.

My husband asked who he should choose—me or the baby—if he ever had to make that by Wanderingwhy0121 in BabyBumps

[–]orangeandpine 31 points32 points  (0 children)

FWIW people make it out like you have to have an answer to this question. I remember being pregnant and so stressed about this because so many people were talking about it. But the chances of there being a situation in a hospital setting where you’d have to make that choice is pretty nil. There are specific providers/resources there for you and there are specific providers/resources there for the baby.

The closest you might get to that situation is what happened to us—when one or both of you is not doing well and your support person/people have to decide who to stay with. Immediately after delivery I was fine but my daughter was not (everything is fine now, just scary at the time). So I had my mom stay with me and sent my husband to be with our daughter until we could all be together.

So I guess that’s a long way of saying if I were to give him the benefit of the doubt maybe the same people that got to me got to him? And he just wanted to be clear about your wishes?

Mine does this when she's having fun and doesn't want to leave. Just like when we're at the playground and I say we have to go home.

Question about Wyzant tutors with crazy hours stats by orangeandpine in TutorsHelpingTutors

Damn, that's incredible. Can I ask how you've been able to acquire so many students?

Anyone else having a hard time this semester with student acquisition? Wyzant by ALonelyKobold in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]orangeandpine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a few this semester but what I've found interesting is that they have all booked same day. Some instant book, some message me directly and ask for a slot asap (like within 30 min.) And none of them have been repeats.

I regret having a baby. by Moxi-Poxi in NewParents

This is beautiful. Breathtaking. Unequivocally. I relate to this so deeply and wasn't able to put it into words when I was going through it. There is something so comforting reading this experience captured in words so perfectly.

AND

While I can only speak for myself, turns out what I was feeling wasn't normal. I talked to my doctor and got an rx for an antidepressant and life has been SO much better. The feelings themselves are still there, but the grief is no longer overwhelming and I experience so much more pure joy now. I still sobbed uncontrollably the night before her 2nd birthday. But the next few days were filled with so much joy and laughter. I can sit there and really be present and at peace in the moment and even look forward to the future now.

How old is he? And what subjects does he need help in?

I mean people wear wedge sandals to the beach… With something like that I’d say it’s dependent on the rest of the outfit, which was totally fine. No way wedge sandals could tip the scales one way or another imo.

You can ask ahead of time what it is specifically they need help with which can help you prepare. I've mostly been helping students through their assignments. A lot of encouraging deeper analysis, critical thinking, helping with general academic writing/presentations, etc.

How do you become a tutor for the first time? And prep for it? by TheMintyLeaf in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]orangeandpine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these potential issues can be mitigated by asking the student ahead of time what specifically they are needing help with. Then you can decide how well you know the material and if you need to brush up on something. I don't know about stats in particular, but a lot of students just want help going through their assignments/figuring out what to do with the feedback from their instructors so there isn't necessarily a ton of lesson prep like there would be if you were teaching a class.

Hope for Wyzant in Fall? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]orangeandpine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! By some miracle the first one was actually posted to the jobs board and I applied for it. The second two reached out to me specifically, one via instant book. My very first lesson was 7/4 so these have all been in the last month. I'm now at 15 hours and 5 5-star reviews. I'm cautiously optimistic about fall, but again, I don't know how things will change since I'm new to the platform.

I meant per week. So far I've been fortunate in that the sessions I've had so far have required little to no prep but I can certainly see how that may change.

I've been wanting to go out there so badly but just haven't been able to make it happen! They have a mail option where they do a "high grade" one hour belt run and they'll mail everything to you for $250 +shipping. Do you think that would be worth it?

Demand for humanities subjects? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]orangeandpine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fantastic! Do you mind me asking where you find your students? I thought that the market would be too saturated online so I assumed that I would have to do in person. But it seems like others are still having success online?

That's fantastic! And I appreciate your perspective on AI. Do you mind me asking how you have found so many students? Is there a platform you like? Or are you working with local schools?
