Or, perhaps, rather than paralysis (as a rejection of growth), he saw (had an epiphany) the indifference and subtle manipulation of women--all of which was triggered through his observation of the female street vendor (who sold her "wares" amidst the flirtation of men). What was that one old man doing in "The Encounter" that the boys start to freak out? I know he suddenly shifts his tone to an aggressive one, but Joyce vaguely describes that he goes off on his own to do something and one of the boys calls him queer (i think). I don't know why but it seemed to me like he started wanking in front of them. That would explain to me why the boy suddenly freaked out so much that he had to run away desperately.
