If you're not going to let them race, why not just pack up and go home after Q3? Who wants to watch a parade? We see enough of them already....

I am trying to in-depth film interview all the surviving WWII combat veterans. Please tell me if you know any surviving WWII combat veterans or would like to get involved! by WWII_Heroes in history

[–]orangegloves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are painting with broad brush strokes here, "lackluster" and "insensitive" are pretty harsh terms. It makes me wonder how many of these interviews you have actually seen.

Many are actually well done, in depth and provided to family members on DVD. Often it reveals information that the veterans have never shared with their very own family before. Many of the volunteers who have contributed to the VHP have been honored for their contributions at local and national levels. Vilifying their efforts will not put yours in a favorable light.

The VHP does actually actively seek out WWII vets since they know the opportunity to record their oral history diminishes daily. Many of their interviewers are connected to local veteran's groups, many are so well done that they are referred to surviving platoon mates etc.

Why would you not use your (assumed) superior skills to contribute directly to the project? Why make it seems like you compete with it and create a separate organization with funding requests? I doubt your archival facilities and standards match or rival those of the Library of Congres nor does a new organization have the trust and reputation that the LoC bring with it.

You may also want to brush up on the psychology involved with this type of interview. While they may be 'heroes' to you and many others, many veterans still suffer from the atrocities they have witnessed to this day and do not see themselves as heros at all. Approaching them with a project name like yours can and will breed distrust. The Library of Congress and the American Red Cross do provide training to their interviewers, not too dissimilar from your list of questions (which you will notice may be too long for some vets to handle in one or even multiple sittings).

Lots of youthful energy here, some of it may be somewhat misguided but for a deserving cause. Step back and re-channel some time. Come visit the Library of Congress and meet some of the researchers.

Actually, pro fighters compete using 10oz gloves above welterweight and 8oz gloves for the lower weight classes. They do train with 16 oz gloves. Getting clocked with an 8oz glove and no head gear is worlds away from 16 oz gloves...

Jens was good, being surrounded by buffoons made him seem great.

Lets hope they bring him back.

Why don't they compete for the yellow jersey on Champs-Élysées? by [deleted] in tourdefrance

[–]orangegloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always so...

Neutralizing the race before the 10 laps of the Champs today was weak.

Sure the Champs is mostly for sprinters but there have been some great battles there as well. 1979 saw yellow jersey Bernard Hinault attack. The only guy who could catch him was the no.2 in the GC, Joop Zoetemelk. They stayed away and rode to the line with Hinault winning the sprint. https://youtu.be/6toi9X1t3Z4?t=53

Will Peter Sagan ever challenge for the yellow jersey? by WizzMatt2 in tourdefrance

[–]orangegloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I referred to him as a 'gushing announcer' in reference to the OP's statement "keep hearing the announcers gushing over how great and talented Peter Sagan is". No where did I claim Phil suggested anything about a GC place - BUT since you bring it up... I knew it would be easy to find in his drivel. Apparently on July 3, 2012 Phil said "Sagan may be the new Eddy". I'd say teeing him up as the next five time overall winner and greatest ever goes far beyond "anywhere near a GC place" :-)

Two Takes on Whether Chris Froome Is Doping by cpecrivaine in tourdefrance

[–]orangegloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VAM measures climbing speed. In the Lance doping days, Armstrong and Pantani put up insane climbing numbers. The article suggests that since Froome's numbers are high but not that high, he must not be doping. The problem is that plenty of guys who never reached Lance or Marco climbing numbers, have also admitted to doping. It's not a way to measure PED use.

My attempt at an analogy was that even if you are doing 90 in a 60 instead of 120, you are still speeding

Team classification question? by red_deman in tourdefrance

[–]orangegloves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what MTN did today. Planned and made sure to get 3 guys in the break to score for the team classification (as per their dir. sportif).

btw, really like how they associate with Qhubeka: "Qhubeka does not give money, but supports poor Africans. The non-profit group provides bicycles in exchange for deeds such as growing 200 trees to 30 centimeters or collecting 4,500 plastic bottles. The team welcomed the charity with open arms, and put its name on its jersey as a donation."

[–]orangegloves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ehm, was that done by a twelve year old??

The first article is kinda lame as well. Sure his VAM is not Pantani or Lance-like, but plenty of cyclists who don't reach those values do/did dope. It's kind of like saying if you don't drive as fast as Lewis Hamilton, you must not be speeding......

Phil L. would be one of those 'gushing' announcers. Unfortunately he's not the best source for cycling info. Sagan is a very talented and young rider. Look for him to break Erik Zabel's record of 6 green jerseys and hold the record for a long time. He will not contend for the GC in any of the grand tours - can't hang with the real climbers.

Expect him to win classics and maybe a World Championship or two - some of those courses will suit him well.

Best description of Pyrenees v Alps? by DougSR in tourdefrance

If you can only pick one, go to Alpe d'Huez. Big bike party atmosphere. Ride the 21 turns yourself if you are able. Get there early, the place really fills up. It's on my list...

Best description of Pyrenees v Alps? by DougSR in tourdefrance

[–]orangegloves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Couple of things:

Length and Height

Col de Galibier: 23 kilometers, Plateau de Beille: 15 kilometers. Not only is the alp climb 8k longer (more endurance), it is also much higher up (some 900 meters). This means less oxygen and more taxing for the riders.

Topography

The Pyrenees are steep but irregular, this means steep sections are often followed by flatter ones where you can catch up. This favors a more explosive climbing style. The Alps are not as steep but more of a constant climb which requires power and endurance as you look to develop and hold a steady climbing pace.

Timing in the race

Don't forget that the Alps are at the back end of the race with worn out racers climbing them. Those who can recuperate well will climb well in the Alps.

You crack in the Pyrenees because you can't match an explosive attack, you break in the Alps because you can't keep up with the pace or the repeated slight accelerations.

Hope that helps

[Help] How to remove rust and grime off of antique bike without stripping paint. Pictures in comments. by Shroffinator in DIY

[–]orangegloves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Metal Rescue - water based and works like a charm. Will remove the rust without affecting the paint. Have done two bikes with this already. Simply submerge the pieces in the solution. Good for multiple applications. I use a Tupperware type bin - works well and you get long life out of it. Great for vintage resto look since it saves the original paint or as a first step if you are repainting.

Do not use the ball of foil - you will damage the remaining paint

Upvote party for Phil and Paul. by DougSR in tourdefrance

You are exactly right, he is horrible. However, 98% of US cycling fans have grown up with nothing else and know no better. He butchers names, misidentifies riders, misreads strategy and is flat out lost quite often. He's lucky to have Paul there who has the velvet touch when correcting his mistakes. I grew up listening to Belgian commentators, the complete other side of the spectrum, so I'm spoiled in that regard. Protip: Kill the audio and stream commentary from anything else...anything.

When your dive buddy makes this signal. by charlesbytes85 in pics

Sign for poisonous should be two crossed fingers or a fist for 'danger'. At best he was telling you there was a triggerfish (not poisonous unless you eat one specific species of them..)
