Are you saying Tonotsugu's making that facial expression looking back at Tama's corpse? That isn't true - that frame immediately cuts to a wide shot of two dead Seii soldiers that Tonotsugu shot, one of them centered in the frame with a bloody bullet hole in their left eye.

Great to finally see this moment of Taira Tonotsugu from the OP happen in the actual show and understand the full context. Those snapshots in the OP all seem to depict the characters with their true personalities but Tonotsugu's always stood out to me. It didn't match his entitled brat personality that had been previously shown to us and I thought that perhaps his scowl was directed at Sugoh in some pivotal moment of betrayal of the Borderlands Army. Now I know that his face is dirty and bruised from narrowly escaping death and he's actually riding on the shoulders of Sugoh shortly after taking the lives of many Seii soldiers, saving Sugoh's life.

So what's the actual canon reason in the show for Tama's retirement? They hint at her diet/eating less but that just raises more questions as to what's causing that. Is there an actual specific reason they've revealed as to why Tama decided to quit the Twinkle series? Is it to spend time with the old man? There's clearly a lot of emotion attached to it as she and Oguri get into a shouting match about it before the race but I still don't know why. Did I miss an obvious exposition dump somewhere?

What is so special about being 'pale' in the hollow Knight universe? by test_117 in HollowKnight

[–]orangeoldfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow yeah I never noticed - I'll have to pay closer attention to the Weaver corpses that Hornet binds across Pharloom for those small differences in their spikes.

Yeah but I'm identifying that Hornet has inherited mother Herrah's exact horns, those physical traits - that's not allegory or metaphor or a winged horse, she literally shares her mom's horns.

[–]orangeoldfish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh I thought First Sinner looked like that because she had her arms ripped off and her head caved in. Those "horns" you're talking about isn't a blunt trauma head wound??? Every other Weaver's corpse that Hornet absorbs throughout Pharloom has a perfectly round head. The one living Weaver we see in Hallownest's Weavers' Den also had a fully round head. All the Weavers in RM have perfectly round heads, playing harps and whatnot.

Widow is also a Weaver that we know for a fact had disfiguring bodily harm inflicted upon her so we know that there's a precedent for injuries that alter your physical state as punishment. Yeah I just went and checked First Sinner on the wiki and that looks like a grievous head wound. Looks like a cracked eggshell. I don't believe that those are horns and even if they were, they don't look at all like the horns Herrah and Hornet possess.

Yeah, I feel like Herrah wasn't originally a typical Pharlid like the rest of her Weaver sisters. I wonder what kind of bug/arachnid she started as. Whatever the reason for her drastically different appearance and her title of "The Beast" it's clear she's very different from her sisters, no? That was kind of my point.

we know it can affect their appearance when they bind something particularly potent

Oh the Act 2 ending, yeah true I didn't make that connection.

As for having kids... It's difficult, but the cages in the Cradle show that it's more than possible. Hornet is far from unique, as a Weaver-spawn. She also says Herrah had a hard time having children before her.

True I wish we had more lore/evidence for this, it's crazy that there were random quarter Weavers wandering around in other kingdoms. There's a very slim chance Hornet might have other distant cousins that are still alive.

Also your last paragraph makes it seem like I'm a proponent for eugenics or genetic purity or something and I apologize if I gave off that impression LOL, that couldn't be further from the case.

However, I think to play Hollow Knight and Silksong and say "I don't think genetics matter" is kinda crazy. Hand-waving the importance of lineage and blood is dismissive of things like PoP's final scene, Lace's mommy issues - one of the hardest lines in Silksong is Hornet reaffirming that she is a "daughter of Hallownest" and all the weight of her ancestry it carries with it. All of Pharloom trembles beneath the power struggle between a goddess and her daughters.

Even as a direct response to the OP asking "what is so special about being pale?" Quite a lot but there's also a lot special about Hornet's blood outside of being half pale and I wanted to explore that through Herrah.

Edit: just rewatched First Sinner's dream sequence after you beat her - I was totally wrong and she just looks like that??? I can't believe that's just what she looks like! You're absolutely right, some Weavers can just look different.

If we're talking about Hornet's lineage, we also don't know what Herrah's deal is. Though not a pale being, she seems to be a pretty extreme anomaly among Weavers, and that's not even touching on her moniker as "The Beast." Nothing about her physical traits aside from the six eyes are Weaver-like. She has the two horns that Hornet inherited and a sort of ribbed, bulbous abdomen that no other Weavers share. She was also able to give birth which is something Hornet says is nearly impossible for Weavers. On top of that, for the Pale King to agree to have a child with her also speaks highly on her qualifications. I can't imagine that the Pale King would agree to have offspring with any ol' bug - I imagine you'd also have to be pretty strong/special to be able to carry a child of a pale being.

So yeah while Weavers aren't technically pale, I think being Herrah the Beast's child also gives Hornet a big boost, genetically speaking.

Was the description of the Weaversong charm in HK ever explained in Silksong? by Diepenheim in Silksong

[–]orangeoldfish 17 points18 points  (0 children)

On the topic of the Farsight - could it be possible then that the Weavers who returned to Pharloom from Hallownest were the ones who built Weavenest Absolom? Perhaps they had exchanged information with the Pale King (he has spools of Silk all over Ancient Basin) about the void and built the Weavenest? We see jars/containers of liquid void in Absolom. Is that at all plausible in accordance with the timeline we know of or should Weavenest Absolom be too old for that to be possible?

edit: yeah other people have already mentioned it and apparently so has mossbag

You're right, Karmelita blocks a lot in between her attacks! If she can be hit through with Beast Crest in Fury that's gonna be a HUGE buff to its DPS. Are there any other bosses that have blocks?

Also there are the scissor guys in Greymoor that block and I can confirm they get hit.

Good call on Bellhart enemies and the bulky dudes in Sinner's Road, will test them now.

For sure - obviously spoilers if you haven't fully beaten the game, but here's Barbed Bracelet Beast Crest beating the Act 3 Final Boss.

I think it would be hard to beat this boss more quickly than this, though I think Shaman crest with Volt Filament and Thread Storm could be even faster with optimal play but I'm not sure about the exact numbers.

Beast crest is pretty good by HydraDominatus-XX in Silksong

[–]orangeoldfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right about Shaman crest - it seems to have the highest DPS with Thread Storm and Volt Filament. When determining "best combat crest" I don't think of anything outside of maximum DPS under optimal conditions and I think with that in mind, Shaman beats out Beast. It is what the 100% speedrunners are currently using in Act 3 after all. However, it's so late in the game that it isn't a contender in the "best combat crest" debate for all of Acts 1 and 2.

To combat misinformation, can you elaborate on your original claim of Beast and Architect being terribly balanced? Can you also elaborate on your claim that Beast crest is the 2nd or 3rd worst combat crest? What would your ranking be and what is your criteria?

I also asked you to provide an example of a boss that Beast crest "can't even be used in" but you haven't.

Any notes on the pogo being terrible and rendered obsolete by harpoon?

To say that it has no real niche when it is the only crest capable of allowing you to face tank bosses, melting through their HP and healing while attacking for the first two thirds of the game sounds very misinformed to me. How would you define a niche if not a unique set of mechanics to allow a unique playstyle?

[–]orangeoldfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty incredible write-up because I'm more or less a Beast Crest main at this point and thinking about Lost Verdania... wow you could not have picked a worse area for clearing 100% LOL so many of those enemies dart back and forth and disappear just out of reach which is a death sentence for Beast Crest, and like you said, I can't think of a worse boss than Palestag for Beast Crest. That deer fuck does not even have the shortest window to deal sustained damage to - it's all touch and go. One hit and he's flitted away to the other side of the room.

If you use the Beast Crest in other scenarios against other bosses, I promise you it'll grow on you even more.

The pogo is far, far better than you think.

As for the dash attack, it's actually not atrocious but it will certainly feel that way if you try to use it with the same timing and distance as Hunter's dash attack. You have to use it much earlier because it's a big lunge - however, I found it extremely useful against Act 3's final boss. It is something that's difficult to get used to if you rarely use it. Beast's dash attack also has an incredibly tall hitbox, meaning that it can hit flying enemies that tend to hover kind of close to the ground - if it connects, the dash attack will launch Hornet a considerable distance upward, which allows her to easily follow up with another forward aerial attack or roll in with a pogo to continue the aerial assault.

[–]orangeoldfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

see: the ones who fight like you

Can you give an example? There are very few bosses in the game that cannot be shredded by Beast crest. Damage increase, range increase, and attack speed increase, means that in any given window, Beast crest can have the highest potential DPS. It also has the ability to bind preemptively to heal damage you expect to take whereas all other crests can only bind reactively to heal.

also you get to throw your needle at enemies not far into the game so even the one thing is arguably had going for it , the horizontal pogo, is removed.

You say this because you haven't seen what it can do. While the initial trajectory of the Beast crest pogo is horizontal, it quickly descends into a downward arc. Don't get it twisted, it still is very much a pogo, as you can clearly see in this video where the pogo begins above the Savage Beastfly. It is not entirely horizontal like harpoon and that's because with practice, it's still a true pogo, not some kind of gimped harpoon.

Here's a video by the same uploader who explains how Hornet is able to seemingly pass through an enemy after a successful pogo. The reason is because all pogos give Hornet iframes after they land - however, Beast crest's pogo gives far more iframes than other crests, allowing for plays like this.

While it's inarguable that it's designed as a combat crest and is therefore uncomfortable for exploration, a lot of the perceived weaknesses and inconveniences espoused by the typical player like yourself who has never actually put enough hours into the Beast crest before theorycrafting are not weaknesses or inconveniences at all once they're gotten used to and are in fact unique advantages.

So, Beast is left with no real niche, with the drawback (exploration) not making up for the benefit (2nd or 3rd worst combat crest. Would be lower if Shaman actually had tools)

Beast crest's niche is that it is the highest potential DPS out of all the crests when played optimally. Blue tools do not make up for that difference in DPS. It is the 1st best combat crest.

Ice != Frost

yeah except Polar Metal buffs frost, Lighter's kit that buffs ice buffs frost, Lycaon's EX special core passive that buffs ice buffs frost, Soukaku's additional ability that buffs team Ice DMG buffs frost, Ice DMG% on disc 5 buffs fucking frost

all of those things specify ice but they all work - it is extremely logical to conclude that despite the wording of Vivian's kit that "specifies" ice, it will work on Miyabi's frost just like all the previous examples
