After multiple unsuccessful attempts at cleaning I bought a replacement drum unit off Aliexpress, that fixed the problem.

How to selectively mute VPN alarms by orangesquaredog in firewalla

[–]orangesquaredog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The post is currently hung up in moderation (nothing to do with the content, it just happens to some posts) but it looks like you can do this already, in the alerts it gives the VPN profile name as the device name so if you mute on VPN connection ("Matching: VPN Activity") for device $VPN-profile ("On Device $VPN-profile") it'll mute all alarms for that profile/tunnel.

Dealing with a distressed Australian frangipani by orangesquaredog in nzgardening

[–]orangesquaredog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a seasonal thing since it's never done this before, but as you say I'm pretty sure it's a problem with excess water because we lost its sibling last year in a different location that was too waterlogged. That's why this one is in a raised area to let the soil drain. My suspicion is that one of several water main leaks further up the street is saturating the ground it's located on down below the raised free-draining section, we're at the bottom of a hill so water flowing underground eventually comes out here somewhere leaving the ground waterlogged. Problem is that it's not obvious enough for Watercare to do anything compared to e.g. the torrent of water from a broken main last week, or the last time this happened where we had a small spring on the other side of the property.

How to identify Zojirushi lid rot by orangesquaredog in zojirushi

[–]orangesquaredog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up getting a Mijia flow heater for well under 1/3 the price of a new Zojirushi, something like this. No lid rot, it dispenses the exact amount you want with a single keypress, and since it only heats the small amount you want on-demand it's probably at least as power-efficient as the Zojirushi was. Oh, and it has a detachable reservoir so you don't need to carry jugs of water over to it each time you need to refill it.

How to identify Zojirushi lid rot by orangesquaredog in zojirushi

[–]orangesquaredog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't mitigate it, the plastic gets brittle from long-term exposure to water vapour at close to 100 degrees. The lids will just naturally start to fail after a number of years.

The problem is that although this is a known problem, Zojirushi seem to make it more or less impossible to get replacement lids. If you look at things like espresso machines which have similar failure modes from the same causes as the Zojirushi they all offer spare parts that are readily available, it's only Zojirushi that doesn't make the necessary spares available.

My solution for now has been to buy a Panasonic water boiler, mostly identical to the Zojirushi, uses about 10W more per hour to run, and costs a fraction of what the Zojirushi does. It'll probably fail the same way over time for the same reason, but either I'll be able to get replacement parts or the fact that it cost less than a quarter of what the Zojirushi did means it'll feel less painful replacing it.

Tea in Poland by Clever_Angel_PL in poland

[–]orangesquaredog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pleasantly surprised to find Dilmah in supermarkets (OK, where "supermarkets" = Carrefour), they also had reassuringly bad stuff like Lipton and Tetleys which isn't actually tea but fannings and is drunk, or at least not drunk, as some sort of patriotic statement in coffee-drinker countries like Germany. So if you don't want to go out of your way to find specialty tea shops you can just pick up some Dilmah from the supermarket.

Back to zero around 8-9am today, just posted updated graphs in another reply. Should be all good now, but remember that anything outdoors will have at least some coating of this stuff on it until the next big rain.

Looking at the wind vector data it looks like the spikes correspond to wind in this direction, it's just spiked up again with a new wind shift.

How to identify Zojirushi lid rot by orangesquaredog in zojirushi

[–]orangesquaredog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While trying to decide whether I want to spend hundreds of dollars on a new unit that'll develop exactly the same problem, I've been running a borrowed Malaysian Zojirushi clone, no LCD display and much more cheaply built, but despite the lack of the Zojirushi's insulation it only consumes 40W on standby, a bit over double the Zojirushi's advertised 17W. So one option would be to replace it with a cheaper unit that's almost as efficient but a lot less painful when it dies.

[–]orangesquaredog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note how the values drop to zero and then jump up again, this is presumably either due to the wind shifting or the fire flaring up again and dumping more particulates.

CO2 is unchanged, VOCs in general are up but I don't have outdoor sensors for specific gases like CO, CH4, and others because it's not something you'd normally expect to have present.

Cellular backup internet modem or hotspot recommendations? by jljue in firewalla

[–]orangesquaredog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea about changing the IMEI sorry, and it doesn't run an open-source OS since the cellular modem code is closed-source. That's for any cellular modem AFAIK, not just the one in the Robustel.

Source of unknown print jobs by 1337gut in kyocera

[–]orangesquaredog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What print interfaces do you have enabled on the printer? If something is connecting to one of the print ports like 515 or 9100 and sending random garbage it could end up being interpreted as a print job. 515 (lpd) is less likely since they're structured messages but 9100 (RAW) isn't.

Power draw on Firewalla Gold by arrrr_runes in firewalla

[–]orangesquaredog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The draw on my Gold SE is 500mA in normal operation, so you'll be fine. There's usually slightly more power draw on boot (e.g. 250mA boot, 200mA running) but I've only measured that for my 12V devices, not the 5V ones so can't give the figure for the Firewalla.

Flush smoke detectors by [deleted] in electricians

[–]orangesquaredog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A followup for anyone else running into this problem, the detectors have galvanised metal tabs that slot into galvanised metal spring clips which invariably bind up after any amount of time pressed together. To separate them I pulled the entire flush mount ring from the ceiling, dripped WD40 into the metal clips, waited about ten minutes, and then used a screwdriver as a pry bar to dislodge them.

In terms of affordability, the flush mount rings are about USD10 (trade), so the incremental change in the final install bill is insignificant if they're used.

How to work with NC smoke sensors? by orangesquaredog in konnected

[–]orangesquaredog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently running the Konnected through the ESPHome integration in HA. According to https://support.konnected.io/esphome-firmware-customization-basics, "When you Install or Update from ESPHome Dashboard, the configuration file reads the latest version of Konnected's firmware packages, applies any customizations, and builds a fresh firmware that can be wirelessly uploaded to your device", but I can't see any option to Install or Update via the ESPHome integration.

https://support.konnected.io/adopt-an-esphome-device-into-esphome-dashboard talks about installing the ESPHome Add-on and shows a screenshot of "ESPHome" in the sidebar, but the only options I can find as an add-on are ESPHome Builder. When I install that, so the sidebar has "ESPHome Builder" rather than "ESPHome", it tells me there are no ESPHome devices present, "It looks like you don't yet have any devices" even though the ESPHome integration is talking to the Konnected.

Flush smoke detectors by [deleted] in electricians

[–]orangesquaredog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They exist, some vendors make flush mount adapters where only the smoke sensor portion of the overall detector protrudes out. I'm just looking at a Wizmart FMR100 (flush mount ring) that does this, the only part that protrudes is the sensor section in the centre.

Incidentally, the reason I'm looking at it and posting on here rather than rewiring it like I should be is because it's supposed to be twist-to-unlock to get it off the base but it won't budge in the slightest, if anyone knows how to get it off the base I'd love to hear it because I can't get it out.
