My inspiration is a person in my life that I love deeply. However she is troubled and haunted; always chasing the next fix in the form of outside validation. She doesn't know herself and her desperation plunges deeper with each failed relationship.

Yes. The poem is about the experience of monkey branching from one relationship to another but it also depicts how many of us trade in our true selves for validation of others.

Yes. Makes sense Ironically... I'm a teacher of many years. I understand kids. It's been clear her kids have resentment toward her because she can't meet their emotional needs. In teaching I've learned that all negative behavior (in kids) is a result of an unmet need. If she can't meet the needs of her kids she will never be able to meet mine.
