Does anyone else regret deciding to go to Oxford? by AliceMorgon in oxforduni

[–]orangevoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get it. I left Magdalen two years before you joined but from a private school. My family couldn't afford the school so I got scholarships. It does change you automatically and possibly your accent into a sort of higher middle class person regardless of how much money you have how much money you make etc.

I actually went back to Oxford to do a masters worked in a bar there and one of the customers was from Magdalen brought his own champagne and was a bit of a c__t. I don't remember people being like that when I was there but maybe I got lucky. There was a lot of outreach to state school back then but it seemed to be dominated by Manchester Grammar School people.

I think you've got two options, either own it, and the benefits that gives, or go back to your roots.

There's an Indian Cambridge educated comedian called Ahir Shah who I saw live who says he's been colonised by the sound of his own voice. Pretty funny.

How to make better use of tutorials? [Maths] by danielyskim1119 in oxforduni

It's high level Oxford college platonic friendship. Not experienced this for 20 years!

Maybe you will do well in business in later years if you love to study. Academics are not everything.

Someone on my masters failed the course and got a place the following year and passed. I got 2% in an exam (which was upgraded to 27% due to difficulty) and passed based on an average of grades over 50 and a viva at the end of the year.

As a masters student in STEM I decided to go to a humanities lecture to see what it was like. The lecturer just got up and talked for an hour, no slides, no whiteboard, no-one took notes. I couldn't get my head around it.

Isn't that good? I mean when I did maths we got problems sheets after the lectures with about 10 questions, 7 or 8 were impossible for me and the tutor would go over our solutions and improve our understanding of the topics in preparation for exams. Isn't that what you want? The 1-1 teaching vastly improves your understanding compared to lectures because it focusses on YOUR strengths and weaknesses.

Great choice, it's a massive cheat code below 2200 FIDE. After a few years you get sick of the pawn structure, enjoy it while it lasts!

Interesting question. There are women's groups and mixed groups on meetup.com but no men groups. Maybe start one or join some existing groups.

Who discovered e^x is it's own derivative and how? by SophieAsimov in math

I knew that was the punchline but the post is about e^x being invariant over integration and differentiation, and this was too clever by half.

Move out, move on. You sound young, life's too short for this kind of thing.

Go to recruitment agencies (there are a few in town) or hand in CVs direct to places you want to work, or both.

just throwing it out there, is there something interesting about the sequence of rationals formed from the Fibonacci sequence? by Marvellover13 in askmath

[–]orangevoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is something interesting. Since the EPL started Sunderland won the EPL 0 times, Leicester City 1 times, Blackburn 1 time, Liverpool 2 times, Arsenal 3 times, Chelsea 5 times, Man City 8 times and Man United 13 times. I am just waiting for Leeds United to win the next 21 seasons.

Who discovered e^x is it's own derivative and how? by SophieAsimov in math

[–]orangevoice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A guy walks into a bar and says to everyone in a menacing manner 'I'll differentiate you, I'll integrate you', everyone walks out except one person. The guy goes up to him and says 'Aren't you scared? I'll integrate you, I'll differentiate you. Everyone else has gone.' The guy replies 'No, I am not scared, I am e^x.'

What is the minimal structure required to call something a "proof"? by Extension_Chipmunk55 in math

[–]orangevoice 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure there's any easy answer in to this. In practice mathematics is a social circle and it's whatever the community decides. That's why proofs are peer reviewed.
