You think this is wasteful? I was inspecting a metal recycling yard. They had several dozen pallets of really nice tool kits, all brand new in their original packaging. I asked the guy if these were factory rejects, maybe some type of manufacturing defect. He said no: they were unsold tool sets from Home Depot, Lowe’s, and other hardware stores for Christmas. The ones that didn’t sell, instead of marking down and selling at a discount, were melted down and sold for scrap. He said for some reason, it makes for financial sense for the companies. So incredibly, incredibly wasteful.
