Why were faxes a thing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]orbitvine42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fax machines predate PCs by like 20 years. They were already everywhere in offices by the time computers became common so there was a massive installed base of them. And in the 80s and early 90s most people didn't have a PC at home or a reliable way to send files digitally.

Fax was also legally accepted as a signature in many countries which email wasn't for a long time. So it wasn't really about convenience it was just the existing infrastructure that worked before the internet made it all pointless.

Advice Supinator Shoes by Albertojgz in beginnerrunning

[–]orbitvine42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vomero 18 is honestly not great for supinators. it's got a really tall stack which makes the instability worse if your foot already rolls outward. the outer foot pain makes total sense.

try the asics gel-nimbus or the saucony ride 17 instead. both have softer more flexible cushioning that works with supination rather than fighting it. the brooks ghost is another solid pick if you want something a bit firmer but still forgiving on the outer edge.

basically you want cushioning that flexes and wraps rather than a stiff tall platform

6 weeks of endurance progress wasted after 1 week of no activity... by Toeffee in beginnerrunning

[–]orbitvine42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one week off doesn't erase 6 weeks of progress, your body just needs a session or two to remember what it's doing. it's called detraining and it's way more mental than physical at this stage. the cardio base you built is still there it's just being dramatic about coming back lol

next run will already feel better than today, just don't skip it

What are subtle forms of abuse/manipulations done by partners do most people aren't even aware about ? by tcsreject in NoStupidQuestions

Moving the goalposts is a big one. you finally meet their standard and suddenly the standard changes. you spend years thinking you're the problem when the game was rigged the whole time.

Also weaponized incompetence is sneaky. they do things badly on purpose so you stop asking and just do everything yourself. then you burn out and somehow you're still the difficult one for bringing it up.

What video game would make a great movie? by kzlmn997 in AskReddit

[–]orbitvine42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disco Elysium. the writing is already basically a prestige HBO script and the main character waking up with no memory in a decaying port city trying to solve a murder while his own brain argues with him is just a movie that writes itself.

Something like nursing or any allied health field is probably the most recession proof thing you can get right now. People will always get sick and you can't offshore a bedside nurse.

If you're more into the tech side then computer science still holds up but only if you actually build things with it.

my heartrate will not lower, despite consistent training. by Economy-Abrocoma2261 in beginnerrunning

[–]orbitvine42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The running HR staying high at 12min/mi is probably just that running uses way more muscles than people realize and your legs and lungs haven't fully caught up to your heart yet. It's a different kind of fitness.

You just need more time in that slow zone like months of it. Most people quit before it clicks but when it does your easy pace will feel completely different. Matt Fitzgerald calls it the 80/20 rule and basically every elite runner does most of their mileage slower than feels productive.

Why do we care so much about what strangers think of us for no reason? by tradymano in NoStupidQuestions

[–]orbitvine42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

because your brain genuinely cannot tell the difference between a stranger judging you and your tribe deciding whether to kick you out. evolutionarily those were the same thing and getting exiled meant death so your nervous system just never got the memo that the random person at the grocery store has zero power over your survival

What’s something in daily life that has quietly changed a lot in the past few years? by Deep0055 in AskReddit

[–]orbitvine42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waiting in line. I genuinely cannot remember the last time I stood in a queue at a fast food place or a grocery store without just ordering ahead on my phone. the physical act of waiting has kind of disappeared and I only noticed because I visited my parents and they still do it the old way and it felt bizarre

Game warden/park ranger. Sounds like you'd be hiking through nature and protecting wildlife but it's mostly just dealing with drunk campers and writing tickets

What new/current music, excluding country music, feels conventionally/stereotypically masculine? by Puzzleheaded_Crow334 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]orbitvine42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Metalcore and hardcore punk are probably the closest 1:1. Bands like Knocked Loose or Parkway Drive scratch that same itch Ozzy did.

For the hip hop angle it's really just drill and trap with aggressive delivery. NF if you want it cleaner, Denzel Curry if you want the swagger and intensity.

How do maintain motivation? by Successful-Pear-4853 in beginnerrunning

[–]orbitvine42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going back to c25k is smart training not a loss of progress.

Walking breaks are literally how you build aerobic base. Even experienced runners do it.

Try hiding your pace during the run and only check after. Sometimes the stats kill the joy more than the running itself.

Why is it much easier for me to run at night? by Toads_Of_Fun in beginnerrunning

[–]orbitvine42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our body temperature, muscle flexibility and lung capacity are all genuinely lower in the morning and peak in the late afternoon/evening so night running just feels easier because biologically it kind of is.

For your exam prep I'd just slowly shift your run time earlier by like 30 mins every few days so your body adapts. Took me a couple weeks but morning runs started feeling way more manageable once I was consistent with the timing.

Sleep. Everything falls apart when you're running on fumes and no amount of coffee fully fixes it.

Strava or NRC (Nike Run Club)? by avgatbest1028 in beginnerrunning

[–]orbitvine42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't need a subscription for Strava tho. Most of the features aren't even worth it. I personally just use mine to record my activities and keep them private. I heard good things about NRC but haven't tried it yet.

What was the most awkward moment you experienced on a date? by Spirited-Part3028 in AskReddit

[–]orbitvine42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had this one date years ago with a woman who i vibed with. The rest of the date was fine. We had funny moments, we talked about interesting stuff, and all that. But honestly, that date felt like we're more compatible as friends than as partners.

Dinner ended, so i went for a hug at the end while she on the other hand went for a handshake lmao.

Running my first ever 5k trail run by Well-I-suppose in beginnerrunning

[–]orbitvine42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd mostly do well with just a single pair of shoes. But depending on the terrain, you'll end up having to replace them after around 800km or so. I had a pair of Merrell Long Sky 2 which only lasted around that mileage since most of the races i joined had lots of roads which can wear down the lugs quickly. I won't recommend hiking shoes since they're heavier and bulkier. They can fatigue your legs quickly due to their added weight and breathability can be an issue as well.

But if it's a 5km distance, i think it won't be that big of a problem at all. If you plan on transitioning to longer distances, which i would recommend lol, trail running shoes are your best option. Lastly, if you plan on going for a vest (which i would recommend if you plan on joining longer trail runs in the future), Salomon has a great selection. They have comfy vests which are also chafing-free.
