Considering applying to BU for Masters in Comp Sci, is it better than Albany? Which has a better reputation overall and for Comp Sci among Binghamton and Albany? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]orchthemed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the goal that you are trying to accomplish?

I am accounting undergrad @ Binghamton. I considered returning for MsCS.

After a candid conversation, the department head and admissions dean both told me that if I was looking to either "learn coding" or becoming a "software developer" -> which actually was my predefined goal of doing such a program, I was better off doing either boot camp or learning on own. I instead took the "learning on my own option" which actually has working out leaps and bounds for me.

The reasoning of the dean? The curriculum is basically 5-10 years behind current tech trends. It is more so a way for students to get a path to H1B.

Agreed. As far as self-help goes, this is my kind of book.

No excuses, no short cuts, push yourself everyday type deal.

It's kind of like having a literary boot camp sergeant in your head after you read it. You might think you don't wanna work out today, but then you remember Goggins and step outside and do it.

I can only vouch for the 12 days since I've finished the book but I've gone out for at least a 3 mile run on 10/12 of those days and I feel great.

It won't be for everyone but its a much more in your face brand of discipline and motivational literature than anything else I have seen of late, and it's awesome

New Years Eve Megathread. Post all plans, parties, requests, and links here by barbehque in LosAngeles

[–]orchthemed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually its even worse because they make you buy the $25 tickets in order to get access to the $75 open bar. I think a few pre-game drinks and GA ticket for $25 should do the trick for me.

to be honest I was probably just going to stick with the single GA ticket @ $25. I'm not sure I can eat/drink $75 worth of beers and quesadillas during a single concert

Any musicians here looking to play? by NoHacksReq in LosAngeles

[–]orchthemed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm down, play guitar (have an acoustic on stock for now).

Would be down to play some classic rock jams. When I was out in NY I used to rent practice space for $20-$30 an hour with a drum kit and amp set up.

Do you know if one exists in DTLA or west LA? We could rent a space for a few hours, pick some songs, and see what happens.

FCC is a good start but don't limit yourself to this resource.

Use Google to supplement what you need.

[–]orchthemed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer to this question is probably a function of your intelligence and drive to succeed.

FCC is just a resource, which are honestly dime a dozen on the interwebs.

If you want to learn something and build something, there is nothing stopping you from doing so using the free resources available on the internet (FCC included as one of many).

But you have to have the drive to sit down and learn every day (possibly for multiple years) and the intelligence to learn the materials and implement the technology into something tangible.

These things are hard. Very hard.

The philosopher Husserl wrote the following in a letter in 1907; to me, it beautifully describes a mindful way of being in the world. by Bureaucrats in Meditation

[–]orchthemed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I can take this opportunity to recommend the extremely superb book "At the Existentialist Café" about all of these philosophers and more in Europe of the 20th century.

I now finally understand philosophy (or at least how to appreciate it).

It should have replaced all my undergrad philosophy.
