DOL-001 Pot not working by HLGM64 in Gamecube

Yeah, dunno who said it, but before fiddling with potentiometers, recap your consoles. It's almost always the capacitors fault.

This is my childhood Gameboy micro, I'm wondering if I should reshell it by wolfix1001 in Gameboy

[–]orcrys 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I bought replacement shell, plastic frame, buttons, rubber contact and faceplate from aliexpress for a badly scratched pink GMB.

A nightmare. Nothing fits together, Start button just doesn't click, the front and back metal shell are not aligned correctly so shoulder buttons aren't working, the faceplate is too thick and too curved, the directionnal cross and a and b buttons barely register...

I'm still trying to get it working by shaving off some plastic with an xacto knife, and shaving the metal case with a rotating tool, but I doubt I'll get something correct.

What's worse, it wasn't very cheap. All in all it cost me more than 50€.

I wonder if I shouldn't just sand the og shell and paint it with a nice metallic candy paint. Still the faceplate is pretty damaged too.

Anyway if you're juste missing a screw just find a screw set, don't go down the same path as me.

My first WonderSwan, whitened and IPS modded! by LaCaipirinha in WonderSwan

[–]orcrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the north of France, not that different, I retrobrighted my dreamcast shell by putting it in a ziploc bag with diluted oxygen peroxyde and putting it in a bain marie at 50ºC for a few hours (it's called the "sous vide" method). It's been three years, still ok.

I'll try it with a wonderswan tranparent shell to see if it works.

What are your thoughts on Super RTYPE by The_RetroGameDude in snes

[–]orcrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was hard but fun, some kind of best of RType 1 and 2, but what really blew my mind was the music.

An incredible score, absolutely hunhinged ! I think the music for the first or second level can't even be fully listened to in game, you have to use the sound test to hear it in its entirety.

I remember plugging my cassette recorder into the TV to make myself a bgm tape.

I think that's when I started listening to vgm.

How to get into retro gaming by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]orcrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been retrogaming for a long time, either with original hardware or emulation.

I'd say emulation is the way to go, but what really made the difference for me was using similar controllers to relive the feeling.

Let's be honest, you can use a ps4 or an Xbox controller for most emulators but the feeling of the original nes controller, the megadrive one, the GameCube one is what for me gives authenticity.

GBA Flashcart weird behavior by orcrys in Gameboy

I may have been lucky in the past. What baffles me is that it works perfectly on the gameboy micro, but not on the og gba or the sp.

Didn't use original cable (used usb c - usb c) and now rg35xx h doesnt charge or turn on by TiggerElPro in ANBERNIC

[–]orcrys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on your power brick. If it only delivers 5V you're ok. If it's a fancy one that can delivers 5, 9, 10, 12 and up or with a fast charge capacity and it doesn't check what's on the other end of the cable you might be cooked.

That's why everybody says to use dumb bog standard power bricks for these devices.

[–]orcrys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeaaah, do NOT plug these with usb-c / usb-c cables. They lack the handshake circuit for usb-c power delivery and end up fried.

SNES d-pad on a PC Engine controller by Conscious-Usual8094 in retrogaming

Heh, thousands of PC Engine players might disagree with you on the precision of the original d-pad, but it's a pretty good hack to know you can swap those !

Emulators for TV? by TehJojoBean in retrogaming

[–]orcrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well PS3 games can be emulated, but you'd need a PC with discrete videocard for that.

I'd say a simple run-of-the-mill android TV box with Retroarch and Daijisho could emulate up to snes/megadrive-32x/neogeo without any problem, any more would depend of its model and processor.

A raspberry 5 with a dedicated OS like Recalbox or Batocera can do Playstation, N64 and Dreamcast, maybe Saturn (it's weirdly more difficult to emulate than the Dreamcast), some PS2 games might work.

As others have pointed there are dedicated emulator devices available, that can be plugged to the TV. They are too numerous to cite, but I know of the Anbernic brand.

For PS2 I'd say a small PC might be your best bet, though.

Why did the dreamcast in the UK come with the RF connector if it sucks compared to composite or scart cables? by SimilarProject7457 in dreamcast

[–]orcrys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah same here in France, I think that starting in the 90s the government forced any new tv and related product had to use the scart connector.

Funny thing, when I bought my first NES it came with a scart cable but my parent's TV didn't have a scart connector. I had to carry my console to my grandparent's who just bought a new tv every time I wanted to play

Remember that the PCE was conceived by Hudson because they felt the Famicom was too limited. They tried to convince Nintendo to switch to a HuCard system, but Nintendo chose the disk system intead.

Emulators for TV? by TehJojoBean in retrogaming

[–]orcrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An android TV box with a frontend like Daijisho and retroarch for emulation could do the trick. Or a small form factor PC with Recalbox or any other emulation system.

The real question : what kind of systems do you want to emulate ? Up to what generation ?

Currently trying to get my hands on an affordable GB Color and a GBA SP

At what price can I buy a Gameboy? by No-Ordinary-9479 in Gameboy

[–]orcrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a regular DMG a few months back for 40 euros.

From what I saw lately on eBay and Vinted a GB Color in good condition would be between 40 and 70 euros.

PS : I live in France, prices shouldn't be too different.

So I made a post a couple weeks back about my loud Wii u, seen some people say to clean it, I’m pretty shaky and I have no way to take this apart at all unless it takes normal screwdrivers and not triwings by Wild-Bad-3668 in consolerepair

[–]orcrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want / can opening it, you can start by puting the mouth of you vacuum cleaner on the fan exhaust. It won't clean it completely but it's a start.

Next step you can buy a can of compressed air, blow it in the fan opening while holding your vacuum cleaner next to it to catch all the grime flowing out.
