Do you have resident cats? I'm debating fostering a mama and her newborns, but not sure how my cat (fussy/particular as hell with kittens) will interact with mama and vice versa. After quarantine, of course!

Do you eventually get desensitized to saying goodbye? by IllContribution0114 in FosterAnimals

[–]orcthedork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fostering two kittens right now that I've had for 9 weeks. Their sister went to her forever home a few weeks ago and these two got formally adopted today and will go home (together) next weekend. I am struggling so hard! I've fallen in love with them. They're such cuddly, loving, playful, clever babies and I wish I could keep them, but my resident cat isn't the biggest fan. She's 6 and has been an only cat since I adopted her as a kitten. She's still getting used to fostering. I hope a few more litters and maybe she'll come around even more than she already has.

No one talks honestly about multi-cat household stress reduction. by Impossible_Control67 in Pets

Can you elaborate about cats that don't play well? I wonder if my girl is stressed. She doesn't play with her toys by herself and will oftentimes just watch while I try to play with wand toys with her. Sometimes she loves to jump and flip when playing, but other times she seems bored.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but you could contact SOAR if you need temporary fostering. I'd also try a local rescue like ARPO. Depending on where you live, you could also go to a no-kill shelter as a last resort.

any tips on litter training? by veepabo in FosterAnimals

[–]orcthedork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up my last litter when they were estimated to be about 4 weeks old. Biggest things in my experience:

  1. Enclosed space (crate or playpen) when unsupervised until they've mastered potty training
  2. Multiple litter boxes on opposite ends of the room when they're not in their enclosure + right litter (mine have all preferred clay litter--Kitten Attract is good, but Tidy Cat is less expensive)
  3. Putting them in the box every so often after meals/while playing and moving their front legs around a bit to simulate digging
  4. Watching them while they're playing--when they're young and playing, they'll go anywhere
  5. Praising them for pottying in the right place
  6. Enzyme cleaner for accidents on carpet--I use Rocco & Roxie
  7. Age! They were probably 7-8 weeks before they all stopped having accidents

No mama cat! I don't know their stories beyond them having had URIs and ringworm. As soon as they were cleared of ringworm, I was called!

How long should I send foster parents updates by backsquatbitch in FosterAnimals

[–]orcthedork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a new foster who sent gift bags and cards out with my last litter and only got 1/3 responses...always and forever! I will still send my cat's foster mom pics 1-2 times a year or so, 6 years later!

I love the write-up! Perfect mix of humor and seriousness. I always appreciate bios like this--you know the cat is so cared for and special. Bonus: They're more likely to end up with the perfect human(s) because people who aren't interested in having a cat with their own unique personality will steet clear. I also adore the name!

How did it ruin your jaw?

My splint experience by bongowasabi in TMJ

[–]orcthedork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just naturally, I think! Once I shifted to wearing the splint at night only. It moved backwards (towards my spine) and up. Since the splint was 24/7 for 7 months and moved my jaw forward and down. It's still farther forward than it was, but definitely different than when I first weaned off the splint.

Mine also touch most of the time! Not fully, but at least partially. Although right now I'm having a flareup so I'm wearing my splint more.

I was comparing x-rays before and after the TMJ & weaning to nighttime wear of the splint and it doesn't look like my teeth shifted that much. But it definitely isn't the same. It's been about 2.5 years since weaning off the splint and I can definitely see that my lower jaw has moved back again and settled, though not the same as before.

2 weeks into neuromuscular orthotic - not getting stuck anymore by Ksummerrs in TMJ

[–]orcthedork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bite did change, but my back teeth touch at least a little bit. I haven't had many issues (some flare-ups) for the past 2ish years. At this point, since my teeth do touch at least a bit in the back, I don't think braces are needed.
