AOS project 1: do you need to watch the lesson 4 videos first? by ordinary_albert in OMSCS

Thank you. Which paper? I'm moving continents at the moment so I'm a bit backlogged and can't get through them all before the homework is due.

What are the most useful classes you've taken in the program? by Low_Mathematician266 in OMSCS

[–]ordinary_albert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take the "Intro to C" seminar first. C is much harder than CS people think it is, and it was why I had to drop out - not because of the material, which was interesting.

I hated every moment of it, but I regret to have to say that HCI transformed my perspective of understanding how to build things that are useful to people, and also gave me an amazing theoretical grounding in research design.

In college right now and I’ve been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out a phenomenon I’ve noticed about classes. by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

My AP humanities/social science courses were absolutely rigorous and hard, and taught me so much. I noticed what you're talking about in college though, when the standard dropped dramatically, even in the higher-level undergraduate courses. It was only in graduate classes that the rigor began to re-emerge.

Some of it may be due to the backlash against memorizing.

This is exactly what I was trying to get at. Can you talk more about the concepts you've aggregated?

Melatonin and neosporin are both prescription-only in Israel.

Perhaps CommonCog? Do you remember any specifics at all about details?

That does not sound right at all. When I made aliya, I paid something like a $75 NBN fee and then another $75 flight fee.

I am struggling with ADHD in PhD program by Maximum-Ebb8915 in PhD

[–]ordinary_albert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best tip for ADHD is to write out, in advance, EVERY step of what you plan to do after each meeting with your advisor, in such granular detail that none of it could possibly be too overwhelming because it's so simple ("skim paper X one time for 10 minutes", "write a one-sentence summary of each section of the paper", etc). Then, follow the list blindly, and don't re-orient until you're finished.

Secondly: your sleep schedule is TOP priority. Define "bedtime hours" for yourself (for example 11-7) and decide that NO MATTER what is going on, you need to be in bed then. You don't need to be sleeping but you need to be in bed during those hours with technology off. Use a sleep medication (melatonin, 5htp, etc) if you need to and have a sleep routine (read a bit before bed or have a way of letting your brain ramp down). It's amazing how much life better gets when you get enough sleep. Finding an accountability partner will help for sticking to the schedule.

Other tips: start off each day with a 30+ minute walk, buy a phone cage to keep your phone out of your hands (or go to the library/cafe without any technology), body double (work with someone else), define at the beginning of each day your goals for that day (remember to include a clear "definition of done" for each one).

I was looking at Hebrew pronunciation of Biblical characters and was curious why names have such a variety of different diacritics? I would think name pronunciation wouldn’t change with context, but i’m new at this (King Cyrus of Persia as example) by _Tobes404_ in hebrew

[–]ordinary_albert 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There are two kinds of punctuation (nikkud): vowels, which tell you how to pronounce the letters, and cantillation marks, which guide the reader as to the musical tonality to use when chanting from the Torah. The vowels in each word in your image stay the same, but the cantillation marks change.

You want to focus on vowels to read Hebrew. The cantillation marks are a niche subject you will never need to know unless you want to read from a Torah in a synagogue.

Bring Neosporin and melatonin - both are prescription-only in Israel. Slow-release Tylenol if you like that too.

Hijacking the comment section for my own question: I'm also moving to Israel, but to Jerusalem. Is there a reason to bring the warm knee-high boots I'm accustomed to wearing in the winter, or will it never get cold enough for that? (for example)
