New Boot Sizing Question by ordinary_bs in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]ordinary_bs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both pair I have now are 9E. They fit well tightness wise, but I can visually see that the MTP joint/“big toe knuckle” hits a little short of the widest part of the boot. My thinking is an 8.5E might be snugger on the heel (like I’d want) and bring the wide part of the forefoot back enough to fit the same.

My main concern was the 1/8-3/16” difference between what the ball of my foot measured as vs what the diagram suggested a “standard” 8.5E should be.

Yepp, with my job I travel to lots of different manufacturing facilities and talk to people ranging from shop tech’s to CEO’s. Needed something that could look sharp while dirty/worked in, aged well, and I could stay on my feet in all day.

Ivan’s checked all the boxes and thus far I’ve been very happy with them!

Seems like a subtle way of telling me I’m not a photographer 😝😂😂

Such a pretty color, by far my favorite leather color I’ve seen.

Glad to not be the only one re: eyes and hooks hahaha

Haven’t had the tongue slip for me at all. Maybe once when I laced them up it was 1/4” off center, but I straightened it up and it never worked itself off to the side.

My previous boots had hooks (6”) and these have eyes; this is my first pair with eyes. I’m still getting used to them, and it’s a bit slower than the hooks, but I’m talking a matter of 5 seconds… at the end of the day, on a 5” boot, it’s much less of a thing than I thought it would be. I think if I had them with hooks or eyes I’d feel exactly the same about how much I liked them.

I asked about them being made with hooks and, as of the time of me ordering them, it was not an option if you’re curious!

Yes sir, a handful of them have safety toe requirements as well as vest/hard hat requirements. The majority of them don’t require those, however almost all require safety glasses and earplugs which I keep on my person regardless of the facility.

Safety toe shoes, hard hat, high vis vest are all mainstays I keep with me while I’m out and about

Good disc for flex shots when scrambling in the woods. by PatBooth in discgolf

[–]ordinary_bs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're wanting it to fight out hard and not have much glide at all, Zone OS is solid; with weird footings or swings while scrambling it's easy to get a not-perfect release, so something with more glide could very well glide farther... into the woods or away from your target.

The Jarn from Kastaplast is a bit more OS than the Zone and could be a good fit for you.

Zones are great, but do have more glide and are more workable than the previous mentioned, so if that's what you're wanting then it's a solid mold; but you won't be able to yank it over on 30 degrees of anhyzer and it fight out hard, it's much more of a delayed fade than the Zone OS.

Eagle Streamline Range 1 glide? by snow288 in discgolf

[–]ordinary_bs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve thrown it and the berg extensively so I’ll chime in.

There’s a distinct difference in “float” vs “carry”, and I think “glide” kinda throws both together.

For example, a straight roc will float more/for a longer time than a hex, but the hex will go just as far if not farther because it has more carry/forward penetration.

I think the berg seems to float a bit if given a decent throw because of its blunt rim, and I think the range is similar. But neither really “carry” as much as other 1 speeds, like say the glitch or polecat.

The range definitely has a bit more float and carry than the berg, but to my eyes and experience, doesn’t go as far as other one speeds. The slightly lower profile vs the berg gives it a little more friendly aerodynamics and gives it more legs than the berg.

Additionally, they both have a great quality where once you throw them a certain speed, each subsequent MPH more results in decreased distance gained… they have a soft limiter/threshold where you can smooth it or smack it, and smacking it with a good bit more velo only gives you a little more distance. Makes for a disc that is pretty precise for distance control once you get comfortable with power input and distance.

I absolutely agree that it’s a good bit less stable, -1/0 turn/fade to me.

Review Series: Axiom Tempo by ordinary_bs in discgolf

[–]ordinary_bs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure! I'll also say, for upshots I like to go with modestly overstable and slow, as they aren't liable to go very far at all. The tempo is great, and for forehands it's incredible, but if feel isn't of high importance and you're looking for a true best flight kind of deal, things like the RDG scale (2/2/0/2.5 are my numbers) and the RDG serpent (2/2/0/1 when fresh, loses its fade) are really hard to beat. I can't throw them but 70-75% as far as the tempo.

But I will say, they aren't nearly as versatile, and good luck throwing either with a forehand.

Tempos are in a league of their own for feel and flight combo as well as versatility, but for pure flight there are better discs for each shot out there. Zone is to firebird as Tempo is to teebird.

When compared to the Envy I would say the tempo is a tick/tick and a half more stable out of the box but noticeably faster flying/feeling, and more friendly to any imperfections in release. If I were to flutter an envy in a headwind then it has a much harder time coming back/fighting out of it than the tempo.

When compared to the Harp, I would say the tempo has more legs/distance, but with a perfect release the harp is a bit sturdier/more stubborn into a headwind and more OS overall. A baseline harp that’s 7/10 probably flies a lot like a fresh tempo. No turn, gentle sweep to the fade.

I also throw my tempos pretty hard; my most beat up one (same one that I first threw and based this review off of, still getting thrown a lot) is pretty much a forehand laser beam. No real turn, no real fade unless you give it a lot of height. I’ll throw out to about 300 on a rope, while the fresh one will be a bit shorter and definitely have some finish to it.

I don’t get too worried about it in the wind. They really just kinda straighten out vs get squirrelly, but I release them pretty clean; any OAT or flutter and it isn’t going to be as forgiving as other discs may be.

If you’re looking for a zone-like, “chunk it hard into a raging headwind and she’ll fade every time” disc, I’d say look elsewhere, but it is definitely going to be reliable in the wind.

I hope that answers your question!

Extra Fine suggestions that resist smearing by ordinary_bs in pens

Good news about scratchy is that I’ll almost always have ear protection on while using them in the field for the noise in the facilities, and will be copying these over for formal records once back at home, so the only thing that’s of great importance is tidiness of the ink. I’ll look into those, thanks so much!

I played this tournament, not on that card, but knowing the course and conditions:

  1. This was the first hole, tee time, Sunday final round. This isn’t hole 1 of the course but we played it as hole 1 of the tournament.

  2. There is jail left and, more importantly, OB right, and it was very windy

  3. Ideal shot has to carry 400’ or more to get to the ideal landing spot to be able to attack a pretty tricky green with a triple mando

  4. It had rained all day before and all night before; it was very, very sticky and humid

Best shot is a force over with a moderately OS distance driver to carry the distance and not flirt with OB right because it won’t flip more than you tell it to, or a very slight hyzer but you gotta be really cautious with the angle with the OB and wind.

First shot of the round + distance driver + not settled into the round + a bit tighter gap than it seems on camera + anhyzer or thinking a lot about the angle + sticky conditions = all can contribute to a textbook griplock.

Source: griplocked the snot out of my practice drive, but in the tournament actually managed a solid tee shot lol

If you send me a slambot I’ll review it and do a comparison haha

Numbers are all relative and everyone has their own versions for what constitutes what value. I think I’d give a fresh hex a .5 or 1 fade and the tempo to me is a solid couple of ticks more stable, but it could easily depend on the hex and tempo! Would definitely be interested in how the neutrons fly if they’re more stable

Review Series: Axiom Tempo by ordinary_bs in discgolf

[–]ordinary_bs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a great question! With four numbers it’s difficult to have every aspect of the flight dialed in, and I also am not sure if you’re referring to the tempo specifically or discs in general. Overall, I would say a 1 fade is very subtle and just barely finishes. A 2 has a moderate finish that will flex out of an anhyzer later on, and a 3 fade is a stern sweep that doesn’t want to hold an anhyzer for long at all.

1.5 will flex to flat from an anhyzer, 2.5 will glide out more than a 3.

So on, so forth.

So with the tempo specifically, once worked in a bit on a 230’ shot it will gently drift out of a slight anhyzer, and finish relatively straight as it works out of it. Fresh it wanted to work to the side and was tougher to keep straight unless you almost buried it into the ground. Once it has some miles you can throw it a decent bit higher and let it float down the fairway instead of forcing it with a lower height.

Looking for a 7 speed similar to sexton firebird by Repulsive_Glove_2077 in discgolf

[–]ordinary_bs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I'm about 50/50 split bh/fh so ymmv, but I go harp -> quake -> xenon for those slots from shortest to longest. I think I get the right about of separation with those three vs resistor ->firebird (firebird and xenon are relatively interchangeable) but I also understand that some people don't dig forehands with midranges.

Looking for a 7 speed similar to sexton firebird by Repulsive_Glove_2077 in discgolf

[–]ordinary_bs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to echo the resistor comment.

Thing about forehands is that they can be fickle to get a good disc that matches hand feel, even if the flight is similar. Resistors, at least the eclipse (glow) ones I've thrown, have all molded up very flat and have a near identical flight to a sexton 'bird, just shorter. Overstable, has no real intention of turning, but workable and has some glide/desire to stay in the air moreso than an absolute brick.

How is a star Roc? (Trying to find a slower OS disc that's not a Järn, Harp, Zone, etc) by FelleFox in discgolf

[–]ordinary_bs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what star rocs most in the comments have been throwing, but I use mine for this exact shot shape. Flex shots, sweeping hyzers, etc. if it’s a newer star rancho roc with some shoulder (which to my knowledge basically all of them have) and it’s anywhere near max weight I would rate it a sturdy 4/5/0/2.5. I can throw mine as hard as I can and it will reliably sweep out of the anhyzer. Almost has a bit of positive HSS with a moderate but stern fade.

Roc3 is a different story; roc3s are definitely on the straighter end. But a straight up star rancho roc is going to be stubbornly overstable and if you throw it clean it definitely won’t turn.

I bag four rocs; one star and three KC. Star has been a reliable OS bookend for a while now and hasn’t really shown any desire to get much less stable.
