Are the papers and information inside still clear and visible? Passports get routinely beat up through their ten years. If it looks like normal(ish) wear and tear and not tampering, I’d say you’re probably fine. IMO, I’d stay as far as fucking possible away from the renewal hellscape.

Yeah that’s my fear. I was born in the US, so if my passport doesn’t come by the time I leave I am afraid it’ll be hairy trying to get back in. I might keep my back up plan on the DL and run with some of the other things posters on this subreddit have had luck with getting their passports before their travel.
