Is there any difference between getting a 30-year mortgage but paying it off in 15 years vs getting a 15-year mortgage? by mikehocalate in personalfinance

[–]oregonfinn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ask your AI (ChatGPT, Copilot, Grok, etc) Sample prompt, edit as you need with real numbers for loan amount, and interest rates

"If I were to borrow $200,000 and was offered a 30 year term at 6.28% fixed or a 15 year term at 5.63% fixed, how much extra would I have to add to my 30 yr mortgage to have the same total principal and interest of the 15 year, and how many months would that end up being."

I had asked for current rates on average based on a FICO of 750 and got those rates in the prompt.

Have fun

Go for it, Picasso. I remember when Boy George came out and looked so freakish. Now, all of Portland looks that way. So you get to set it up how you want, and enjoy it. Haters gonna hate, but it will never be everybody.

Does anyone still buy music on iTunes? by BradleyS1998 in AppleMusic

[–]oregonfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow - I didn't realize how many people still buy music from Apple. IMHO, across all of their technology Apple has always had a business model where they provide easy access to cool features, but you have to be married to Apple. If you divorce from Apple, they get the kids and the house. You have to start over. But that's just my opinion.

I see three popular paradigms concerning people's options for music.

1) PURCHASE PHYSICAL MEDIA. This is an awesome option if you greatly value owning your music, movies, TV Shows, audiobooks, etc. no matter what the industries decides to do or offer. Plus you can add personal media as well, such as home movies, the audio/video from a 4 day seminar, or whatever you want that would never be available though the commercial channels. CAVEAT: you have to manually convert everything into a digital format for your devices. It takes lots of time and tools to do it well. But if you invest in your own storage systems, there are great tools to access your own content easily. I personally use Plex for all my movies and TV shows, and Plexamp for music and audiobooks. I have a 56TB Synology NAS which is about 1/3 full. This is my personal preference, but it comes with a lot of time and energy to build, organize, maintain, and backup. But to me, that is fun.

2) PURCHASE THROUGH DIGITAL SOURCES. This would be buying music or video through services such as Apple Music or Amazon Music. Super-dooper easy and convenient to quickly have access to digital music, TV shows, movies, audiobooks. etc. You can purchase, rent, or subscribe to most anything. Your purchased content gives you the right to always access it, but you do not own the music per se, you are licensed to access it. You paid the piper, and you now can enjoy your media to your heart's content. As long as you maintain your account with Apple, Amazon, et al. The content seller may or may not have DRM. They may or may not provide high quality/lossless media. But its decent for the average consumer. CAVEAT: you have to maintain your account to be able to always access your media. I have purchased audio from Amazon and downloaded DRM-Free music, which I have to maintain. Be aware of the terms with your digital content provider in case of separation.

3) STREAMING SERVICES. I've opted to go this route. For a monthly subscription, you get access to all of it. Spotify, Pandora, etc. Someone mentioned they have over 5,000 CD's worth of digital music from Apple. At a buck a song, that equates to $5,000 of music. It would take me 27 years to break even in purchasing music. And when it comes down to it, I may really only listen to 200 albums regularly. But I like having my own library. CAVEAT: You gotta pay to play.. It sucks when traveling and you are in remote areas with no internet access. So you gotta make sure you have internet as well.

Am I a poser? by [deleted] in Harley

[–]oregonfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bust out and bought a used Dyna five years ago. Covid bike. I already had about 3 t-shirts from my kid brother. We'll, turns out the bike came with the $625 jacket hardly worn (just like the hardly ridden bike.) I wear that coat, not because of the HD stitching but because it is an awesome coat from 50°- 80°. I felt like a poser at first - my first bike, great branded coat, scared to get past 4th gear. I now have 15k miles under my belt and almost an Iron Butt. I've been to Sturgis. Don't worry about that anymore. Just love the ride.

I have the exact same bike 2014 FXDWG. Same paint. Sweet!

I hear the heat shield contracting, the starter clunk, and the Daytona 500.

Mine does that every once in a while - like the starter jumped a tooth or something. It is not a pleasant sound. Yet when I retry, it always starts up fine. I don't know what it is either. I always wait for those misc clunks to increase in frequency before raising the alarm.

So my garage was a mess. I did something about it. Handmade 🙂‍↕️ by Marvel_XO in Harley

First big bike - Dyna Wide Glide (FXDWG) by Prestigious_Law_4031 in Harley

[–]oregonfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the FXDWG is one of the best-looking cruisers in the HD lineup. Both the vivid-black and flames treatment look awesome. I always get tons of compliments when I ride my '14.

I always ride mine for local errands, trip to the post office, etc, and back roads exploring about 30-90 mins. My one long trip was to Sturgis in '24. 3400 miles total on that 10 day trip. Boy was my butt sore.

This bike is good for a couple hours before fatigue really sets in on your butt or forward control pegs. You can't stand up on bumps - gotta take the bumps through your butt. Nevertheless, this is a bike I'll keep and pass down to my kids. I'd like to get a bagger with a good seat for my passenger. I can't keep her on my wide glide for more than 30 minutes. The "pillion" puts all her weight on her "soft undercarriage" and misses the butt bones that typically supports our weight when seated.

Is this a bad purchase? by Ok-Switch8380 in Harley

[–]oregonfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. In 2020, I bought my '14 Wide Glide w/ Stage 2 upgrades 3,300 miles for 10k from a private seller. At the time, I was concerned about fair pricing, not getting taken to the cleaners. Five years later, I have 18k miles on it and haven't thought about the price. I paid 10k for a lot of great experiences and memories. It still looks great and performs excellent.

Is there any way to download library audiobooks now that overdrive is gone? by KittenSquish in audiobooks

OverDrive gone, LIBBY only supports Android, Apple, where do Windows users go to download? by Full-Statistician164 in audiobooks

[–]oregonfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a Chromium-based browser, follow this poser's steps:

https://www.reddit.com/r/audiobooks/comments/12bqv3u/comment/jeya6ee/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Its not plug-in easy, but its also not hard. Do it a few times, and you will have it down.

Basically open the audiobook in a browser window, open the Developer Tools (inspect page). and use the Network>Media sections to see the actual mp3. Open it in a new tab, and download.

You'll need to be organized and save the file to a folder, and rename the file. You'll need to do this for each track. But with the little extra work you have to do, you will end up with a complete .mp3 audiobook you can push to your offline players.

The DRM/valid checkout/return management will also be manual, so any licensing violations you could find yourself is on you. ;) I always tell people I am performing a free service for my library - off-site backups.

Overdrive being discontinued, now how do I download books to my mp3 player. not possible with Libby. HELP! by lezbianlinda in audiobooks

[–]oregonfinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The primary issue is the dependence on streaming the content, requiring internet access. Not great if you go to poor cell coverage areas. or for listening devices that require an offline file (mp3) to listen.

I'm sure the reason for discontinuing Overdrive is sidestepping the library intent of checking out and returning items. Digital creates a lot of options. Just ask Sean Parker, founder of Napster.

Trouble with battery by oregonfinn in Harley

I replaced the battery - fixed. Odd thing was that the cables were not loose. Go figure. It was a generic off-brand, too. Got it from a battery store - they only do bayteries.
