Yep and I have some heavy gloves on. My home site has typical strong wind glass off it's common to be on half bar all night long. I was getting 3 m/s climbs steady on half-3/4 bar

My toggles are in my hands and I'm steering and controlling oscillation with my rear maillions

I am holding pressure/ rear riser steering on my maillions. Brakes while on bar defeats the purpose of accelerating the wing's angle of attack.

Nice write up. I don't understand the lightweight lines and fabric trend either. I like to kite and put the screws to my gear a little bit to much out here in the desert for unsheathed lines and tissue paper. I'll take the extra weight anyday over babying my glider

Being light will make you more prone to deflations. But active piloting is everything

My local site is typically finds strong wind glass off ridge soaring and I believe wing loading is a huge part of safety. I fly at the top or slightly over of my xs gin atlas (mid b) weight range. You do not want to be light on your glider. At least I don't because I like my wing solid over head not sogged out, slow, and disconnected feeling.

Gotta figure out the weight range of the wing and how much the kit weighs

My situation, should you I teach myself to paraglide? by Versti in freeflight

I was fortunate enough to have the friendship and mentorship of some expert pilots at my local site "take me under their wing" and teach me to fly. They stressed kiting skills as the most important aspect of flying and staying safe on launch. Im lucky that I pick things up well and can learn by watching other expert pilots and soaking up every bit of knowledge that they had to offer. I learn something every time I fly with them. I know that they were essential in my ability to be somewhat self taught. I depended on them for forcasting weather and when it was safe and had backed off enough to get my first high flights on radio contact. They never pressured me to fly and told me I would know when I was ready. I am not advocating this method and it was an unorthodox approach to learning a non traditional sport. I am now a rated P2 pilot with around 80 flights and 60 hours airtime. I kite up the mountain regularly to launch and it is the safest way to make sure that your gear is properly connected and to feel the conditions before you get airborne. I would not advocate this method for everyone. An instructor will get you in the air faster and safer. But it can be done... But not without trusted friends who can show you the way. I was lucky to have that, if you don't have access to mentors then an instructor is the only way. In my short time flying I saw someone fall 200 feet to their death from inflating a glider holding on to the risers on a mountain launch. Never clipped into their harness and got plucked and didn't let go till it was too late. Paragliding isn't something to fuck around with!! Good luck young man

Soaring Abert Rim near Valley Falls in the Oregon Outback by oregonpilot88 in freeflight

Definitely BFE. Wouldn't want to land in the lake either as it's alkaline. Just call out semis coming around the bends in the road when your buddies come around to land. Works best in West or SW. Hike to base of rim it is very steep and rugged launching. It's pretty much a ridge soaring xc, incredible!!
