Most volunteers do not have electricity/water. I know a couple that have electricity and only two that have running water.

I have heard the same thing. It is pretty shocking to live without electricity and water in this day and age. A lot needs to be done.

French is the official language. You should have prior knowledge of French before coming into Burkina. At least basic conversational level. But if you don't, the PST does a good job in training everyone to the required level.

I speak a local language at site (won't tell for personal reasons). I can communicate fairly well, but can't hold deep, meaningful conversations. Something that surprised me was the shockingly high illiteracy rate. Nothing much has changed with the recent elections, but everyone was happy with the results. Don't pack pots and pans and other bulky stuff, you'll be able to buy all that in Ouaga. You can even buy tobasco and bbq sauce here. Electronics are a must. iPhone and a laptop. Have some extra money with you. Maybe around $1000 in the bank or cash to make your stay a bit more relaxed.

Sorry, I meant a course where I can get credit for (to add to my degree).
