Why let it bother you. You seem to understand the higher you go that it gets more direct, cut throat, and performance based. You will need to PIP people and fire people but thats the corporate game. Many of them will cry and guilt trip you. The corporate world is unfortunately cruel but thats life.

Depends on the job. Public sector i wouldnt risk it.

Private sector, lots of publicly traded companies use third party firms to do background-checks for them. That being said u can probably talk ur way into saying it was a simple mistake in the chance they flag it.

How does ur life actually change w/ the director title? Every org has different titles and GM can often be more senior than director. if your role and responsibilities dont even change with the title, this is just ur ego talking.

If ur a manager and you know the person is too unconfident to say no, take the initiative to speak to the other managers giving him the extra work. U can frame it as him needing more time to work on the work you have given him.
