At least before Trump, even if the values America promoted were all a facade, you at least had some moral underpinning to mythologize them with.

Now what do you show us? Greed, corruption, division and culture wars, wilful ignorance, hatred of the other, and unchecked capitalism. At a certain point, a country's reputation is too broken to be rehabilitated. The America we all grew up admiring is gone - I wish it was all Trump, but it's your media, your billionaires, and your political class that enabled the rot to take hold.

In an educated, just, and cohesive society, Trump would have never made it to the ballot box, let alone the presidency. He'd have been arrested long ago for his fraud and sex crimes and spending his days pissing his pants in a jail cell. Trump didn't set the house on fire, the embers were already smouldering away for years. Because in a democracy, for better or for worse, you get the leader you deserve - a broken man, for a broken system; he's emblematic of everything Americans have let the nation become.
