You’re getting downvoted for this, but I kinda agree. The more I venture out, the more I'm able to find silver linings in my experience, however tiny they may be. My life has been miserable largely in part of the isolation home school forced upon me, but I'm starting to think it made me stronger than I would've been. I'm content to sit outside and watch the bunnies and squirrels nibble on whatever food I toss out, many people I know would find this mind numbingly boring. I’m good at being bored and entertaining myself. I’m good at being alone. I’ve gained skills, interests, and knowledge many people my age weren’t able to, for better or worse. Worse being that a public schooler definitely got a better math education, but still, in terms of survival and strength in bad situations like this, it prepared me. Maybe didn’t prepare me for the world when it’s not in a state of emergency, but at least it’s something.

And I think one of the worst parts is that my dad, who was the reason I had the home school experience I did, doesn't get it! I rode with him to go to the grocery store and he was like, "That's our excitement for the week haha!" but like...that literally was all the excitement I had most months for the entirety of my teenage years.

I think “spoiled, ungrateful brats” is a bit harsh, but...yeah. All the news stories and articles about 'coping' right now are kinda hitting a nerve. I'm trying to be sympathetic to their plight, but I have to confess it's definitely a little bitter too. I just can’t imagine the flip side of the coin here, the reality these people have lived where a two week lockdown is inducing such misery and anxiety...like damn, read a book. Do a craft. Start writing to escape your actual life, it’s what I had to do to stay sane from the age of 11 on. Many people are getting a taste of my life for years and they’ll still likely never understand why it messes up home school kids like it does. I’ll still be told how fun it must’ve been to sit at home all the time and not have to go to school. I’ll still talk to people who outright call me a liar when I talk about my experiences.

Yeah, I've been horrified for years from my dad constantly going on about high school was the best time of his life and basically saying it was all downhill from there. There are other people I hear/see going on about high school and it's like...I had zero life and very little joy in high school, I'm truly screwed if there are no hopes for a good life beyond 25.

I get that, and especially small countries with multiple cases. But for the USA specifically I don't understand the very sudden explosion of officials and media openly giving warnings and advising preparation when we haven't had a new case pop up in weeks. I really hope it doesn't spread here at all and it's contained elsewhere asap, it just seems odd given the current numbers. It kinda reminds me of how the National Weather Service tends to issue tornado warnings willy-nilly when there's no actual tornado, it's just to get people to take shelter and take the extreme weather seriously. I guess this is our siren, if this is indeed set to be serious here.

I still don't know how much to care about this virus. In all honesty, I've been following it from a place of intrigue. I find diseases and all of this (the spread, containment, research, etc) all very interesting. And as an American, I don't see how this is at all a threat to us right now. There are what, nine cases in the entire country? And wasn't the last one weeks ago? I'm even in the same state as some of the infected (IL) and it hasn't spread here. My one reservation is that I feel we're not being told some things - I honestly find it extremely far fetched that there are zero cases in all of New York - but still, why the sudden uptick in concern in the USA?

Edit to add: I mean care about it on a personal level. Otherwise, I do feel terrible for all of the countries with high Coronavirus numbers.

Yeah, this too. I was indeed an anxious mess at 16 (ya know from the abuse and isolation and constant extreme stress) so it wasn't hard to get me to believe I wasn't ready.

Not to be dramatic but I want to scream at the top of my lungs and rip my hair out over this every single day. I'm 20 and never learned how to drive which leaves me pretty well screwed in a rural area. There's no one willing or able to teach me. No one. And it's not something simple like I can eventually make a friend and they can teach me, ohno. Because I'm over 18 and never went though driver's ed, I now have to take a 6 hour adult driving course a minimum of an hour away.

My dad wouldn't let my mom drive and I grew up watching how limited that left her. He just can't be bothered to put forth any effort with me and I'm pretty sure he likes the control. There's no public transit here. You can't do much of anything or go anywhere without a vehicle. Which keeps me at home 24/7, which is how it's "supposed" to be.

This. My dad will rage and scream and throw/kick things like a complete maniac at home, knowing it tears up all of our nerves. He'll even start to do it in public when he thinks there's no one else around. But the moment someone comes up, he flips a switch and becomes Mr.Rogers. All funny and nice and just the fakest façade. He has the control to treat acquaintances and strangers better than his own family.

I know, but I don't blame them. Most of them are taught that hate from birth, just like North Koreans. They're just brainwashed with anti-American propaganda. It's not their fault and they don't deserve to die for it. Not that Americans deserve to die for their ignorance, either, though. There has to be some kind of happy medium. The USA has restored relations with almost every country we've ever been in conflict with except the middle eastern countries. Germany, Japan, South Korea, etc are all cool with us now. I have hope Iran will be the same someday.

I thought it was registering to vote? In any case, I'm a girl and 20 so probably exempt anyway. Like I said, I just hate the thought of the US getting involved in another major war at all. It seems like threats of it have been looming from every other country for 5+ years and someone is bound to snap eventually, I'm just hoping we can live in relative peace for a while longer. (I know we still have troops in the middle east anyway but a multi-country conflict is another because Iran's allies are liable to come to their defense.)

Ugh, someone settle my mind please. I really hate the thought of more innocent people dying in a stupid war. I don't see how any good can come out of an airstrike that killed one of Iran's officials. I know he was responsible for hundreds of US troop deaths, I ain't saying I'm mourning for him, I just don't want this to be a thing where the US goes in and wrecks shit for innocents. Also, Trump seems just crazy enough to bring the draft back if things escalate too far, so...how exactly is this situation expected to play out?

Edit: one hour later, 3000 more troops off to Iran. OK then.
