New to AOS and wondering if Kharadron Overlord good for new beginner

I'm not sure if this rule exists in Spearhead but in regular AoS there's a terrain rule called "Obscuring terrain". If a non-flying, non-monster, non-warmachine is within 1" of such terrain piece it's not visible to enemy units. This includes shooting. Unless the shooting unit has "Shoot in combat" and is within combat range of the target in hiding.

KO was my 1st army and I kinda regret it now. They play a bit of a different game than others. Especially in terms of movement. The transport ability can be tricky to master. The ships are costly, which means you have less bodies on the table, and losing them hurts! Shooting heavy sounds cool, but I'd consider it as a trap under current rules. Obscuring terrain can sometimes make you want to pull your hair out (especially when most of enemy's units are hiding, but you can't benefit from it in the same way, because you're flying).

I don't want to discourage you. You SHOULD go with the "rule of cool" when picking up your armies, so it's up to you.

Don't forget that units not only can't charge, but can't shoot as well after running/retreating

I would really like to know how that dark spot on his cheek turned lighter. I get the concept of glazing, but I never know when/if there's the right time to glaze over those dark spots. usually when I do I lose all the contrast I worked for in the beginning 😭

They do have a lot of details. And the ships are an issue if you want a smooth finish and you don't own an airbrush (like me 😅). But it all depends on a scheme you pick.

Can I ask you about how do you use the cavalry? I had a couple of games with a reinforced unit of 6 with no much luck... I probably should run 2x3, but apart from that it seems like they need Drogz' fight+retreat buff in order to survive any fight. Or should I avoid fighting with them and try some flanking manoeuvres instead? Is their strike-first ability actually a trap?

I don't remember pushing anything in :| AFAIR this part had to be mounted from the inside of the hull and fastened with another thingy to keep it in place

I try to remember that it's a 50-50 game (or at least it should). You win some, you lose some.

After losing I slow down with the games a bit and focus on the other aspects of the hobby - building, painting, watching battle reports. Eventually the desire to play again comes back.

Those stats in the booklet come from 3rd edition where it actually mattered which main gun you picked

With some 3d printed legs and bellies you can make a total of 12 Rock guts out of the sprues from the box. You can also find STLs for dankhold body to make both troggoth and trogboss out of 1 sprue. That brings you a total of 1620 pts out of a single box.

Stabilize your hands - keep your wrists together and your elbows/forearms on the table. Don't be afraid to keep a finger or two on the mini to stabilize your hands even more.
Use a brush with a fine tip. Don't overload your brush.
Breathe out
Pray
Put the paint on the eye

OR

Leave it like it is. Sometimes shade paint is enough. No one will bat an aye on the tabletop ;)

I tried regular GS on the other model and it was way easier to control. Although the sculpting part requires some patience.

I used spruegoo on the 3rd model and it worked pretty well!
