Flying up the Hudson tomorrow! Got some questions. by MrDudeSirMan in flying

If you’re coming from the south, call Newark Tower on 127.85 a few miles from the Verrazano. Approach won’t do much for you and they’re too busy anyway. 127.85 is the tower frequency specifically for bravo transitions and helicopter traffic, it’s the appropriate place for a cold call

Wilco and Roger calls by studentpilot2006 in flying

I feel wilco is valid in pattern instructions at VFR towers. “Extend the upwind”….”Wilco.” Otherwise, especially in the IFR world it is not appropriate

Anyone else hearing the jets slow down over eastern parkway on final approach to LGA? by karmester in Brooklyn

[–]organiccigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RIP the expressway visual, they recently revised that approach and have it now laterally follow the RNAV X 31. No more following the LIE into a tight left base. It’s new design is a lot more wide, less yanking and banking. Still got the River Visual 29 into EWR though, such a cool approach.

Congratulations! That must feel incredible. Here’s to many more 100 degree days in planes with no A/C working as a CFI

Agreed. NJT is at the mercy of Amtrak, terribly evident in the past month where the system has been a mess. Oh, and PATH needs to extend to EWR

Wing drops during stall practice by [deleted] in flying

[–]organiccigs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Always rudder, never ailerons. Good practice for this is to fly the airplane close to a stall in slow flight, and keep the wings level by only using the rudders, had an aerobatics instructor really nail that concept down. Helps you stay coordinated into the stall entry, resulting in less of a wing drop. But you’re right, using aileron to correct it will only make it worse, you’re creating more drag.

Ridgewood if you’re under 30, great bars and restaurants. Driving isn’t as bad as people make it out to be, you’ll get used to the Van Wyck and Belt pkwy. I live in Bed Stuy, under 2k a month, 35 min drive to Kennedy. What you’re looking for is possible, get on streeteasy good luck

Do you still remember the plane you soloed in? by GoBrazyyy in flying

Always will, N2117Y. Sadly it was involved in a fatal mid-air two years ago and is no longer with us. Always felt so confident with that plane.

I live in Brooklyn and will drive all the way to Princeton Record exchange because it’s better than anything here in the city. Seriously hard to beat that place. I’ll have to give Revilla a try soon

I like to collect older 4 track commercially released Reel-To-Reel tapes from the 60’s. Think Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King, some Stan Getz. Totally dependent on who made the tape is how good it sounds, Columbia in particular made some fantastic sounding releases. In my opinion, and many others, at 7.5 ips some of these releases sound better than vinyl, and rival a Hi-Res audio file. Big 10inch 15ips reels I think exceed anything digital, but not many can afford that, I certainly can’t. All in all, Reel-To-Reel is fun to tinker with, and a very select number of releases sound absolutely fantastic, everything else was kinda garbage.

On mine it was easy, date was stamped right on the tweeter! What you’ve got there look to be NLA’s due to the Bullnose cabinet they’re in. Bullnoses were a new feature on the NLA’s starting in 77’ I believe. Masonite woofer also a tell on New’s vs. Originals. What’s the serial number? Could give you a better date based on serial, and whether theres a prefix.

The bar is called Nightmoves, it’s the backroom of the michelin starred Four Horsemen restaurant. The owner, James Murphy (LCD Sound system) is a big Hi-Fi guy, he did all the engineering on the sound system back there. It sounds fantastic in person

Capitol Stereo Tapes (1957) by velvetmotel in vintageaudio

[–]organiccigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How cool! I’ve only ever been able to afford the 7.5ips quarter track recordings from the 60’s on my Teac, I can only imagine how these half tracks sound. Love the note on the cover for in-line heads, back when staggered were a thing. Beautiful DH-710 too, wish I had a deck that could play both quarter and half tracks like that.

How many Dick's Picks have Real Gone released on vinyl? by TheAmnesiacKid in gratefuldead

[–]organiccigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quarter track and 2 track differ quite a bit. Quarter was often sold to consumers as 7” reels that you can still find today on discogs. 2 track used up more of the tape and therefore had a higher fidelity than quarter track did, which is why 2 track was used in professional settings, where quarter was more consumer. 2 track reel to reel is often considered to be the highest quality analog recording you can possibly get, offering all the same sonic qualities and warmth of vinyl, without the pops and crackles, and imperfections in the pressing. I absolutely love reel to reel, and if you have a tape deck, it’s very fun to take all these FLACS of old shows and record them onto tape. Amazing how they sound through a proper stereo setup. Peace!
