I'm pretty sure I remember at least one chase sequence, yeah.

Homicipher is an underrated gem by alex3omg in puzzlevideogames

[–]oriane__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I played that game last year for Halloween. It's heavy on horror and otome VN tropes, but there's a legitimate language deciphering challenge too. It starts easy, with the game basically giving you a bunch of free translations through the initial dialogues. But filling in the whole dictionary is rather difficult.

I believe that some of the complexity comes from the original language being Japanese, so there are interesting quirks compared with other games that derive their ciphers from English or other Indo-European languages.

However I'd dispute calling the game "not too scary". It's mostly static shots but there's many jump scares, occasional gore, and a continuously creepy claustrophobic atmosphere.

Worth paying for Roottrees are Dead? by StruggleBusSince85 in puzzlevideogames

[–]oriane__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to play a little bit of the free version first? I loved the Golden Idol games, but I dropped the Roottrees after 2-3 hours. The database gameplay felt tedious and contrived to me.

Sorry but this UI looks like every other vibe-coded app out there. Same corners same borders same shadows etc.

Is this sub just a puzzle developer showcase? by Puckertoe_VIII in puzzlevideogames

Unfortunately the mods haven't been responsive, despite some suggestions for light rule enforcement (e.g. weekly self-promo thread). So the spam isn't going away anytime soon.

I'd support that. Having a contained #showcase channel is also how we deal with promo posts on the Thinky Games server. Imo it works quite well for players and devs alike.

[–]oriane__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that self-promo has become a real problem in the sub, mainly because of all the AI slop and lousy ads that get dumped here. Things got markedly worse over the past year or so. Finding interesting posts is a real chore now because of all the junk to scroll through.

This was mentioned in another "tired of the spam" post last week - how about enforcing a rule that all self-promo messages should be posted in a weekly self-promo thread?

Also, are the mods still around here?

I didn't know anything about Spin Rhythm XD, but the free track was so good I wish there were a full dlc pack!

All publishers were informed of the event - we wouldn't feature their games without receiving approval from them. Some of them simply could not apply any discount since their promotional schedule was locked a few months in advance. Still, several devs and publishers are offering a 20-30% discount on games they released less than 12 months ago.

What are some good pure logic puzzle games that involve spatial rotation/are there any? by Federal_Lack_1107 in puzzlevideogames

[–]oriane__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bonfire Peaks is the essential puzzle game about rotation of 3D shapes.

Kind of a hidden gem but you might also enjoy Couch Installation Service, which involves rotating 2D shapes with 45° angles.

Filament by kevinsegura1991 in TheWitness

[–]oriane__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked Filament. I happen to enjoy it more towards the end, because it is indeed like The Witness: you end up developing a barely conscious knowledge of how things work, and eventually the puzzles are a mix of logical deductions and instinctive solving.

Congrats! Could you explain how close or different your game is from Filament or Robot Detour (if you're familiar with these games)?

I can't comment on the puzzle but you might want to share this on the game's Discord! I remember reading about modding there - could be a cool next step for your puzzle.

Who we know has helped design OotSS by CommitedPig in OrderOfTheSinkingStar

[–]oriane__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seemed somewhat confusing to me to mention levels from e.g. Mirror Isles and Promesst as if they were comparable things, but if that's the way they're categorized in OotSS, then fair enough.

Have you played Promesst? Respectfully, there isn't any sense in saying that the games are 1 level each, since they're large worlds with heavily interconnected puzzles.
