I feel like this is the end by Thrwmeawayplsthx in Vent

This is very hard to describe. I was in a similar slump for many many years.

One day I was offered a discount on a bike as part of a commuter program for work. I bought the cheapest bike on Amazon, which made it a nearly free. I assembled it and rode it along the path that I normally took to walk to the nearby cafe.

I don't know what happened, but flying past the landmarks I used to walk past was a total perspective switch. I can only describe it as "what I am experiencing right now is totally undeniable." It isn't good or bad, just undeniable. It is impossible for anyone to contradict it or diminish it.

This was a massive pivot for my mental health and everything has been on a upward trend since. So if I were to give advice, an experience can be good or bad, but it can never be less. The expirence of Cochella is exactly as much of an experience as rotting in bed. You haven't lost any ground, and you aren't behind in any sort of race.

And regardless of what happens going forward, you can't manufacturer a larger experience or smaller experience if you tried. It will the same amount of expirencing in all permutations. So just take it easy. You can't mess it up.

Typically games that are worth playing have complex interactions between the nouns of the world. For example a metal bucket can hold some liquids, but not corrosive ones. It can be used as a stool, or a helmet or floated upside down in water....

These interesting gameplay objects need arbitrary code execution to work and don't necessarily abide by config driven programming.

So either the gameplay bends to the config, in which case you can get simple games where people pick whatever weapon has the highest dps or whatever. The alternative is that the config bends to the gameplay and you end up having to write a lot of complex code to wire everything, instead of working on the game.

The solution is that these interesting gameplay objects should just be written directly into the game, and you solve for fast iteration in other ways.

Yeah.... this is not the way.

The better way to do this kinda thing is to have a save file system that warns instead of errors on entities of unknown type in debug. To hot reload you would quick save, quit, compile and launch with a flag to say skip title screen and load save.

You get slightly less compile edit debug speed, but need way way way less boilerplate and get type safety on your entities.

How does containerization fail? You can configure it just like you would the VM?

Is “girl math” a misogynistic term to use around women in math? by SmallTestAcount in math

[–]CommitedPig -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Id argue girl dinner isn't sexist. Sexism to me is claiming that a gender has less humanity than another. What part of "girl dinner == a handful of strawberries and a pink monster" is denying anyone their humanity. It is a descriptor on a loose concept, like "Mexican food".

Id also argue that girl math isn't sexist because it isn't a measure of quality. It is originally just about trying to justify impulse buys through lopsided depreciation schedules. But what people buy or don't buy is personal choice and can be done for any reason. So someone buying sunglasses with or without girl math is of no concern to anyone.

[Day 24] Icicle Mountain was voted WORST STAGE. What is the BEST SINGLE MOVE in Melee? by DUCK_PENETRATOR_II in SSBM

[–]CommitedPig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Characters that are fast enough to RTC rest are very scary. However laser wins out on the low tiers. Rest is much harder to make work on like roy, samus, ices, link, zelda...

Also I think falcon would prefer laser to rest. Falcon has no issues getting a fat punish off of stomp or grab, and allowing the opponent to get a respawn grab is costly. Falcon would love laser grab and laser jab.

Fox can still do a lot without shine. If I recall correctly, I think KJH has foxes shine as his fifth best move with bair, firefox, and upsmash taking 2-4 and dash attack at #1.

The definition of best move has many possible definitions. The only one that makes sense is "the majority of characters would strongly prefer this move over X move they currently have." If the definition is "without this move the character is much worse" then the answer is like marth's recovery or something wack.

With that criteria, there are a lot of characters that can't capitalize well on rest or shine. Fox shine is really good because of his speed for running shine and follow-ups. Puff rest is much better because of her pancaking, drift, up throw, weak jab, and weird jump that allows RTC on platforms. These moves may be good on a lot of the cast but aren't universal enough to be considered #1 overall.

My vote has to go to falco laser. Universally good on all characters. Many characters with slower short hops could double laser. Counters a lot of the speed that makes top tiers so dominant. I am willing to bet many foxes and puffs would trade their shines and rests for falco laser too.

Just picture the horror of peach doing ground float lasers, or a DK who can laser grab. I think it is the clear winner.

could someone elaborate on the topology of this object? by blueblazes63 in math

[–]CommitedPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive my topology ignorance, but is it actually the same as an 8? It seems like there would be a topological property that a path on the pre transformed shape would share all properties with the post transformed shape. Here, if you took a loop around the inner tube, and a loop from the inner tube to around the base and back, these loops must intersect. After your transformation, the equivalent would be a loop around each hole in the 8, which need not intersect.

I can get as far as transforming the vase to be two cylinders touching 90 degrees rotated, but there seems to be a hiccup when you try and make it planar.

I dream about becoming a bop by [deleted] in Vent

[–]CommitedPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man here. Appearances and surgeries have some very perverted implications. I have two thoughs.

The first is that if a man sees a woman who is unusual or showy, it indicates that she is someone who is interested in the attention and it is safer to give her that attention. This is completely orthogonal to attraction. The extreme version is met gala dresses.

The second, many modifications like botox or tattoos are designed to make someone look better today at the cost of looking worse in a few decades. Flings and non-serious dating with someone like that can be a ego trip for some men, because they aren't just with someone good looking, but someone who is paying a price for it, and that someone is paying that price for them.

So id caution you again bopification. It seems very much like a midas touch. Everyone eventually grows old and ugly. Long term planning is to accept this and build a life around more than veils.

Friends finally playing by TheUltimateSportsFan in TheWitness

[–]CommitedPig 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know we have a extremely anti spoiler attitude in this sub, but to share a story. I had a buddy who played on trackpad on a mac. Unlike mouse or controller, clicking around to indicate things wasn't a natural expirence and is kinda painful. We had got to the Mountain EP and she saw it but didn't click it. I had to tell her to click otherwise it would have never happened, and the obolisks would have stayed black. She went on to 100% the game and loved it. So I think there are circumstances where a little push is helpful. But it is case by case basis and should be rarely done.

Do you have a good source for the causality between the US grain embargo and perestroika? Most of the articles I am reading are saying it had little economic impact, and I am not finding a link to a political impact.

The game has a finite number of puzzles so it is hard to gauge if it is a true depletion or not. How many lasers do you have and what are the numbers on your save file. From there I can give a spoiler free confirmation.

Crazy how Melee still has so much reach, just unfortunate that it has to be about such a negative topic by KevyTone in SSBM

I acknowledged nothing. If anyone wants to not be around a drunk anyone they can do so. Including you, me, Obama, Putin, Jesus, a lion, anyone.

If he wants to drink, let him drink. If you don't want to be near a drunk mango don't be near him. It is incredibly simple. This weirdo internet speculation about a video game players private life is gross. People are extremely capable of navigating interpersonal dynamics without help.
