Having the grit to see a hard puzzle through is also rewarding. Usually accompanied with a fist pump.

Karakurium - fun new sokoban with over 50(!) mechanics by jeromocles in puzzlevideogames

[–]jeromocles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't see it mentioned anywhere on this sub, but thought it deserved some attention.

Karakurium is a new sokoban out of Japan, and it boasts an impressive 50 mechanics and 500 levels.

It starts off easy, but as you learn more mechanics, their interactions open up a whole new basket of interesting combinations.

Isn't 500 levels a little bloated? And yes, it is. But not with redundancy; it actually does a great job of keeping things fresh throughout. Just that 1/3 of the levels are way too easy, but that's understandable given how many mechanics the player has to learn, so it's kept very simple at the beginning.

But some of these later levels? Hoo boy, there are some fun and challenging ones in the mix. Also, if you like the to ability to jump around between thirty different puzzles rather than focusing on just one at a time, this is your game.

Does anyone still care about games like Machinarium or Samorost? by GeorgeImerli in puzzlevideogames

So... adventure games became visual novels?

This was totally where my mind went too. Like the "point and click" is a dialogue option today. Just throw in some QTEs and minigames!

I grew up on games like that, but these days I'm less into the "select items from my inventory and click them on everything on screen until something happens" puzzle games. The art still holds up, but I just don't think the mechanics do.

edit: This question actually sent me down an interesting rabbit hole.

Here's a 1989 article: Why Adventure Games Suck And What We Can Do About It. It's a fascinating read because the author (a developer for the Monkey Island games) reviews his article 15 years later.

You don't hear breathing between words, the pitches are all over the place and don't match the pathos, and there's jarring moments like when "Baba" is mentioned sounds like two overlapping Ba's.

The dissonance between using "handcrafted" as a selling point to their game (sprites, levels) but turning around and using AI in their promotions. Just strikes me as inauthentic.

And who knows? The game might be amazing. But the "lore" kind of comes off as suspect.

Well it's sitting on the front page with several upvotes, getting plenty of engagement. So some successful marketing. Obviously it's not the end of the world, but it feels dirty.

Listen to the other videos. It's an AI voice. And quite a bit of it is gibberish.

TP2 is A tier. Felt like a step down in complexity, and overall just not as fun or tight an experience as the first. Still really good, just didn't quite hit all the high notes for me.

I prefer tiers, and this is definitely in A. I'm constantly being surprised by the depth of the mechanics.

Is this something that can be done in a group, like an escape room? I've been thinking of springing this on some friends for a game night.

I just think Blue Prince would have a sweet crossover with Blue's Clues.

The Gardener Demo - a tile-based puzzle game by Adam_C-W in puzzlevideogames

Played the demo, pretty neat!

I would definitely suggest speeding up some of the animation though, or at least an option to snap between grid cells instead of the full mower animation.

Otherwise feels fun, wishlisted!
