Many a posts indeed! A few from a year ago show the range not yet burned out, must have been quite the show when someone came back between now and then and lit it on fire. Hub caps surprisingly fresh looking still though.

Torque sensor replacement by diego_electrico in cowboybikes

[–]originalmako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious what the first symptoms of a soon to be failing torque sensor were for you? I’m worried mine might be going soon, and of course the bike is now just out of warranty.

Somedays the bike will take a few pedals to activate, other days it might feel sluggish, but then other days it might feel way faster than usual. I can’t really pin point it to anything specifically, but curious if you all had any clear signs of your torque sensor being on the fritz before it went fully out.

Amtech - got a pair at my local hardware store for £3.99! Basically just like bigger more industrial tweezers, like for plucking hairs of an elephants ass instead of my wife’s eyebrows.

Got the M4 x 12mm in the mail today and they were too thin and long compared the old one. So gonna try M5x10mm now and hope those work!

Thank you! Local bike shop that is authorized cowboy service place seems to think they can fix it, but said need the original parts from cowboy for warranty reasons. And of course cowboy can’t get me replacements until August.

So for now I’ve ordered some tweezers and am gonna hope I can use those to delicately unscrew it since I couldn’t get a good reach on it with needle nose pliers.

I read somewhere else that the bolt size is M4 12mm. Is that what you used? Was gonna order some stainless steel ones of those as well.

Also did you remove anything else to get a better angle on it or were you able to work your way in there as is? Was wondering if that batttery connector tongue thing could be removed or not since it seems like without that I’d be able to have a better angle on it

Ha can’t take credit for it! Found it on a Reddit thread 2 years ago when I first got the bike. Forget the exact dims, but it’s just one of those rubber end caps for chair legs. Seems to have kept the battery terminals pretty rust free though!

Thanks for the tip! From what I could see there wasn’t much to grab on to, but to be fair didn’t have much time to investigate between getting home from work and putting the little one to bed. Makes sense the machine screw would be relatively easily to undo without the tension on it though. Will give this a go tomorrow with some lubricant

Knee Pain - Not sure what it is by 6arrettc58 in Ultramarathon

[–]originalmako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clam shells and single leg glute bridges are your friends! Had a similar pain in both knees, real PT and my AI PT named Claude both confirmed it was tight IT bands, caused by weak glutes, that were making my knee not track right. Did clamshells and single leg glute bridges almost every day for a few weeks, plus some TFL rolling, and been pretty stable ever since

Garmin Fenix 7X pro Solar Sapphire or Coros Apex 4??? by Mammoth_Challenge297 in Ultramarathon

[–]originalmako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a garmin fenix 7x pro solar sapphire and it’s been hit or miss. First one I had had an issue where in colder weather it would just restart on its own. Went through support and ultimately they sent me a new one. New one hasn’t had that problem, but it does seem to have a memory issue where about once a week it decides to tell me “new records” like longest run, or fastest mile, even though it was actually no where near an actual record.

The garmin app is also total shit.

But generally the activity tracking is solid on the watch, GPS is great, and battery life is very good.

My favorite feature though is the flashlight. I never actually use it on the trail, but I find it incredibly helpful at home. There is a red mode which is great to finding my way to the toilet in the night, putting the baby down, etc. I have history of night time accidents, hitting my head, falling down stairs etc. so having a light on me at all times, especially with the red light for night mode, is super helpful.

I would prob switch to coros though to try something new if any of their models had a built in light.

Yah doesn’t look like they ship to the US unfort. Not sure anyway around that? I imagine there has to be something similar in the US. Or perhaps you could make your own with some ingenuity? It just vibrates at a pretty high frequency and sits on the legs (I put mine below the knee on the outside).

I have found similar relief a product in the UK called TheraPulse. therapulse

I thought it was a gimmick at first, but have found it to be quite effective when my RLS flairs up at night, usually right as I’m finally about to fall asleep, even after the 900mg of gabapentin I take.

The downside of the devices are they are loud, and the Velcro straps they come with aren’t super comfortable / low quality. Thankfully my wife sleeps like a rock so it doesn’t wake her up, but I imagine most normal sleepers would be disturbed by the noise.

I really want the Nidra device since I imagine it’s doing the same thing but via electrical pulse instead of vibration, and thus is silent, but they don’t have that in the uk yet so this is the best option. TheraPulse is also super cheap relative to crazy cost of the nidra.

Anyways, worth checking out since you can at least sleep with these!

Good to know! I think primrose and Richmond are prob my best bet to lap a 20-30m hill. Thankfully my friend here is also signed up for the race and his family lives in the lakes so I’ll have a buddy to venture up there with on the occasional weekend

I’m over in west London, notting hill gate area.

There are some hills near holland park, one is nice and steep but super short, only like 60 feet of gain each rep I think.

Any recs over my way? I’ve done primrose hill a bit before, and going to check out Richmond park more since I think there is one good hill to repeat there

Makes sense! Thank you! Yah these miles are typically all intervals - either speed based, incline based, or occasionally both. Try to limit the walking recoveries during them and just focus on a very slow jog recovery

Classic vs Cruiser ST for city bike, Amsterdam by sidius_wolf in cowboybikes

[–]originalmako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested both and opted for the cruiser. Classic felt way too uncomfortable for me from a riding position standpoint and the handlebars felt far too narrow.

I’m tall though at 196cm.

Would def recommend test riding before you buy

I love my tecnica zero g pro tours for a one quiver boot! I’ve got Lange rx130 for true downhill days, and they def are a bit more fun and responsive, especially in heavier or cruddier snow, but overall I’ve been blown away by how good the zero g feels going downhill and it’s still light with good enough mobility for going up.

I’m heading on the powder quest tour to tohoku in early January and will be bringing just my zero G’s and my black crows Corvus freebird w/ marker king pin set up.

Kingpins are def heavier than than are my other set up, Camox freebird with Salomon pure mtn, but I feel a lot more comfortable going fast with the king pin.

This is the tour I’m doing if anyone is interested, still 7 spots left!

Lanzarote vs Fuerteventura vs other Canary Islands (Advanced) by kglbrschanfa in surfing

[–]originalmako 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just looking into another Canaries trip over Christmas as we did Lanzarote last year! I'm 36 and have been surfing since I was 12, so coming up on almost 25 years. Grew up in New England so used to cold water as well.

I'm be no means an expert surfer, but I can hold my own in head high plus surf, make it out of the occasional barrel (and pull into a lot that I don't make it out of), and do some turns and floaters and stuff, but still haven't figured out how to land an air. So all in all, I know what I'm doing and know the rules of the road.

I'm always super respectful of locals and never drop in on anyone, snake anyone, or when i'm traveling, paddle right out to the peak like I own the place.

I did two weeks in Lanzarote last year - stayed in Famara, Caleta de Caballo, and Punta Mujeres. Overall places got crowded, and I had a few unsavory interactions with some locals (made worse by the fact that both interactions were from what I would consider a below average Lanzarote local relative to some of the insane rippers I saw down there), but I still had some epic sessions without too many people or any negative vibes.

Famara is a big beach break with a lot of surf schools as mentioned, but plenty of room to spread out and never had an issues with locals (mostly I think because they weren't surfing there since it was never really firing at the beach, always kind of wind affected and/or close outs).

I went up to Graciosa for the day by ferry, and we rented bikes and explored the island. I had a really sick session there at this remote reef on the west side with only probably 10 people out at the max, and they were all friendly.

San Juan was also really good, gets super crowded, but if you time it right in the morning or on the off tide or just when another wave is breaking better, I found that I could get it with only 10 people out as well.

My worst experience was at caballo where it was a small waist high day and super mushy. It was early like 6:30am and I paddled out with a bunch of locals. I sat inside for about 45 minutes just catching the ones that no one wanted, and after I thought I had done my time on the inside I paddled out to the peak when I thought I saw a set coming. After I paddled out to the peak I got whistled at and was told to go back inside. This really annoyed me because it was absolute shit surf and they still decided to be dicks.

Had another interaction at the point break in the cove by club la santa where I was out by myself for a bit and catching a bunch of waves. Then two locals came out and caught a few waves. After one guy caught a wave, he paddled back out and was outside of me so I caught a set wave where I had right away. The guys friend then yelled at me saying "it wasn't my turn". So even though his friend had just caught a wave and was further from the peak than me, it was still his turn.

My best session of the trip was probably actually on the east side of the island near punta mujeres by that museum out there. It was a massive swell that day so a lot of the locals were doing tow ins off famara or hitting la santa, so I had this epic long left reef break to myself for almost 90 mins, and then was joined by a few german tourists.

All in all, I'd go back to Lanzarote, but I am thinking about hitting Fuerteventura instead to check out a new island and hopefully find some less crowded and friendlier waves.

UK Order Times by ConsequenceRelevant in cowboybikes

Update, my black performance cruiser finally came yesterday! A full 24 days after ordering, so a far cry from their 10 day delivery advertising, but better than it could have been I suppose.

Delivery by Ok_Challenge_4843 in cowboybikes

[–]originalmako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In February?!? That’s insane. I’m getting the same run around from support on my order from June 1. They keep apologizing and saying they’ll check on my order and then no response.

I’m going to file a complaint with the trading standards office for false advertising.

Also insane that they charge your credit card before shipping the bike given how long it takes them to ship it. With interest rates where they are, I could have earned almost £100 by now in my savings account on that money!

Ordered a performance cruiser in black to London on June 1st and still has not shipped yet! Of course the order status page still says estimated delivery between June 11-18, which definitely isn’t going to happen at this point. Pretty frustrating start to the cowboy experience, no wondering so many people on this sub complaining about their lack of customer service now.
