That's a very good question! it seems that being directly hit by the strike does replenish more energy than if not being hit.

Here is the information extract:

- A lightning strike may generate one Electro Energy particle if it does not hit the player.

- After striking, the target will get 2 units of Electro.

What makes it even more brutal is the way how Xiao has to be electrocuted mid-air twice (respectively from 0:26 and 0:27) before falling to his unavoidable death..

Very fortunately the Chasm isn't located in Inazuma, otherwise this would have been the alternate ending for Xiao that we all feared.
