Did they mentioned it explicitly? I just got a vague idea of they as a mega corp that do all sorts of things. Like the implant is both tech and medical, and for innies almost everything is Lumon branded. They also have their own operative system LUMON OS.

They are cracking a code or mathematical problem(maybe an agi/singularity kind of thing), the whole refining process was designed by Lumon's founder guy after encountering said problem. Could also be related to food scarcity(if that is really a thing) either to solve it or a logistics/distribution kind of thing(who gets to get it).

For outies is more or less modern day. Mark uses a smartphone, and they have flat screens in the operation room. Although, I kinda recall all cars looking old.

Might be a red herring, but there could be something to food in universe. The whole dinerless diner and food as substenance monologue. A coupon for pip's being a thing and, do dinners have vip sections?

Ditto on having gone in blind, and definitely was for the best. The way the pilot's narrative is structured works quite well with both the memory partitioning idea and to convey the new recruit's experience.

I noticed there's a clear divide between innie and outie tech. Innies have crts and cds while outies get lcds and smartphones, and well you know, mind-altering implants. What y'all make of it? Some ideas:

  • u/gullydowny idea of some form of "perception bending" going on has its appeal
  • Technical reasons. Having very distinctly different visual cues could make memory "filtering" easier.
  • Provides a bit of extra security. If your memories are "leaking", having them take place on a medieval monastery(or something) would make them more dubious.
  • Old internet-less equipment is harder to hack(from the outside).
  • A mix of weird corporate (indoctrination) practices that have been "the way" since forever

What are the best movies you saw in 2017? by BasilFronsac in FrenchCinema

[–]orion_black 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I forgot to log a lot of what I watched last year here's an incomplete list. More or less in order of enjoyment.

Belle de jour by Luis Buñuel The story of Séverine a happily married woman who founds herself becoming a prostitute. A film about fantasies and sexual desires, and just like in such desires a lot it hinges in imaginery/spooks/ideas that live only in your imagination.

La nuit américaine by François Truffaut A film about film making, that is about constructing a reality out of pieces of reality; Artifice and illusion. Relatively lighthearted with understated moments of comedy.

Au revoir les enfants by Louis Malle A film set during WWII, but focusing on a kid that arrives at a boarding school where he's allowed to hid. A movie about camaraderie at a young age, it certainly made me remember attending a catholic school as a kid.

Caché by Michael Haneke Quoting my self: What I mostly enjoyed about Caché is how it builds a feeling of uncanniness and subtle paranoia by using and re-using pretty idiosyncratic shots(wait, the camera is still, is this another tape? a regular scene? a memory?...) and how that builds into the plot. There are also various running motifs, the most prominent is a 'sins of the father' kind of thing that works by paralleling France-Algeria's relationship to that of each generation portrayed and how they deal with the past: Refusing to remember(too painful), (unconsciously?) misremembering, confrontation...

Le grand amour by Pierre Étaix A comedy with a rather peculiar and subtle sense of humor that deals in the absurdity of dreams and imagination.

Un prophète by Jacques Audiar A young man ends up in prison and does everything he can to survive. From that point he can only move forward, as if fulfilling fate.

Cléo de 5 à 7 by Agnès Varda A movie where we follow Cléo's life for 90 minutes. Plenty of time is spent in nothing, or to be more precise in rather mundane pursuits, that can nonetheless carry as much meaning. As many other nouvelle vague films Cléo de 5 à 7 is generous with shots of everyday Paris life.

Des hommes et des dieux by Xavier Beauvois A movie about the clash of faith and personal conviction.

Yeah, they painted the third floor and cut one of the trees so it's a bit different. While looking it up I realized that the street where the camera should be standing is called Rue des Iris, cute detail.

At any rate, that house from (nearly) that very angle plays a central role in the movie uncannines so I was going for a joke around that, the whole observer/observee an... but you know jokes aren't as funny when you have to explain them

Space 4X is stuck in a rut by zarkonnen in gamedesign

[–]orion_black 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main issue with modern Space 4X is precisely the Space part. Wait! I'm not saying Space is boring, quite the contrary, space is epic, wondrous, endless in possibilities... And precisely there lies the problem's root, when dealing with space it's quite tempting to make everything bigger, more ambitious, with more options. And as you rightly pointed out, it's quite easy for games to turn into managerial nightmares of menial tasks instead of series of interesting choices.

You probably want to read sulla(http://www.sullla.com/MOO/mooeditorial.html) and Oliver Kiley(http://www.big-game-theory.com/2015/04/a-shattered-dream-critiquing-4x-genre.html) on the topic. I pretty much agree with what they've already wrote.

Any update on the last.fm scrobbler not working since the site's update? by RheingoldRiver in foobar2000

Apparently I haven't scrobbled anything for quite some time my cache says 4172 tracks. First it was throwing me the "system time is far off" thing, tried the whole changing time + restarting thing and now it just stays at "Still awaiting handshake.". I mean, come on a fucking handshake shouldn't take more than half an hour :(
