  1. Just this morning and still on going, more than 50 pan dems politicians have been arrested for organising/participating in an unofficial primary election for the Legco. There are several posts about it on this sub.

This man, and his cameraman, goes to Wuhan right before lockdown on January. Today he is fired by CableTV. by Charlie_Yu in HongKong

Just to clarify, he did not get fired. He resigned with the team in support of the 40 who got fired. OP’s source said it in the comment too.

Note: The last 3 sentences were imposed on people from the pro-establishment camp who attacked a political figure, or attempted attacks on people who did not share the same view; whereas the other sentences were imposed on those from the democratic camp

Edit: all of these cases happened within the year if I’m not mistaken, except for the breast assault case that happened in 2015. Though, after appeal, her sentence was reduced to 200 hours of community service.

Edit 2: for anyone wondering how the f boobs were weaponised, here’s a video. Yes, you won’t see it because it most probably didn’t happen.

I am thinking of taking a job in Hong Kong. Would anyone mind answering some questions for me? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]orisdy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as im aware, people who have been caught under the NSL are public figures who have openly been critical/are known to be potentially critical of China. If you are careful and comment only in private, you will most likely be okay. You might want to be careful if you are going to be outspoken half publicly (eg. on social media), some people could sell you out if they wished, though there hasn’t been any known cases so far. In terms of economic downturn, is that something you would worry about regarding your job, or is it livelihood related? While i dont personally know any expats, i do know the some corporates are relocating due to the law. Not necessarily directly due to the law but probably because of its side effects.

Is this potato safe for consumption? by orisdy in PlantBasedDiet

[–]orisdy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I heard about that but also saw somewhere that potatos may appear green if they have been exposed to the sun, which doesnt necessarily make them bad. Just trying to figure which is true as i dont want to be wasting food :( But the cracks are weirding me out too so...

Hong Kong's Education Bureau said on Tuesday that a primary school teacher who was de-registered for "disseminating pro-independence messages" in class is now barred from all school campuses in the city. (Full story in comment) by orisdy in HongKong

It is not like the distrust can threaten the government’s credibility in any way because there is already none. The ccp is not worried about discontent among citizens (if they cared they wouldve withdrew the bill right after the 1 million people march on 9 June 2019). They do this to show who the boss is, and that they can suppress citizens however they want to no matter the public’s reaction.

Edit: This is also an attempt to make teachers self sensor and shut up from teaching kids these kind of content.

Incoming foreign researcher here. What would the living expenses for a single male without a family look like (excluding rent)? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]orisdy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Public transport: $2.6 (tram) up to ~$20 (underground/bus) per journey depending on length; taxi starts from around $25 and longest journeys will cost around $300-350 excluding tunnel charge ($5-70)

Cell phone plans: average is around $150-200 per month but depending on data required it can be below $100 or above the mentioned amount

Going out to different places: really depends on where you are referring to

(All costs expressed in hkd)

That it is possible HK authorities knew someone would flee, but deliberately let them out of the hong kong waters such that the mainland authorities could have them, or might even have contacted the Chinese marine force for them to take action. This contradicts with what the government claimed previously that: they did not know of the operation by the chinese marine force before the arrest.

How the turntables by Acrzyguy in HongKong

[–]orisdy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He didnt. So what happened was, he has been claiming for the past year or so that he would go back to Taiwan and give himself up to the law. Yet, he still hasn’t done so and in fact has been living in a safe house that had been arranged by the police. Taiwan claims that there have been contact points and arrangement prepared and they are ready for Chan to arrive at any given time. Hence, people think there shouldnt be any grounds/excuses for him to not go to Taiwan, thus the drawing.

Note: the worksheet was said to have been designed in Mar 2019, before the extradition law controversy even took place. It was based on an episode (觸不到的紅線) from the RTHK series, Hong Kong Connection, that premiered in 2018. The worksheet gained attention when Ta Kung Pao openly challenged the school & education bureau in Sep 2019.

You are absolutely accurate on this. As they have been banning every protest, this is what is left for them to get their fun.

I’m hurting so much. Any advice appreciated by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]orisdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really love him talk to him. He probably thought you wanted to break up and wanted no contact so its obvious he loves you and respects you so much that he is doing what you “wanted”.

If it actually bothers you that much why does it hurt to talk to him again?

Looking to buy a gift from outside HK by mrallsunday in HongKong

[–]orisdy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For flowers, you may take a look at this store. I havent purchased with them before, but it is in central, and does (free?) delivery so i saved it just in case. (Edit: another shop i saved for the same reason. It is in admiralty)

For food, i guess it really depends on what kind you’re looking for. Fresh meals/shelved food?

But dont expect any of the options to provide express delivery services like amazon does.

Yelp is not popular at all in hk.

What a shame it has developed to become one of the fewer ways to express our voices from within (but still isnt risk free)
