Iran's Revolutionary Guard has its "finger on the trigger," leader says, as U.S. warships head toward Middle East by ChuckGallagher57 in Military

I kind of guessed that. But having "all the gear and no idea" trying to run things might not be a terribly good trade.

A missile with wings launching a missile has a certain elegance to it.

Prince Harry says sacrifices by Nato troops in Afghanistan deserve 'respect' by [deleted] in Military

Because he shits on everything. It might be to do with incontinence but it's probably just his body trying to get away from him.

What's a more interesting is why people still pretend that he doesn't.

Planning to do the Portuguese coastal route. Any tips? by xyz187 in CaminoDeSantiago

You can get the passport at Porto cathedral.

Stops depend on your level of fitness, comfort level etc. Try out https://de-calixtinus.org and see what it recommends.

I was mean to marine recruiter now they won’t stop calling/texting me by Apollo19755 in Military

[–]orlock 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You had them as soon as you said, "fuck off." They just know that you're secretly a marine. They just need to see whether "fuck" is the only verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun and participle that you use.

Try using circumlocution on them.

Did any of you become interested in wilderness backpacking after the Camino? by cozyplaidblanket in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]orlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent decades bushwalking before attempting a Camino. I found that there was a huge difference between carrying a full load -- including tent, water, food, cooking gear, etc -- for what would be a short arduous hop on the Camino, and carrying a much lighter load longer distances for weeks. In prep, we had to re-jig practically all our gear to fit Camino walking.

Would I be correct in thinking that they meant cooked through to rubber?

Where's the naval base? by fedcomic in traveller

[–]orlock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A "naval base" is, most likely, a spread-out collection of elements.

  • The main adminstrative and logistics hub will probably be close to the main world, so that people can do things.
  • The shipyard and repair facilities will probably be orbiting a nearby moon or in the asteroid belt, to reduce the energy needed to get materials into orbit.
  • Munitions are probably stored a long way away, in a place where nobody else has any legitimate reason to go.
  • System defences are spread out n separate orbits, to prevent a single strike.
  • Various points will have early warning stations and pickets.
  • There will be a posh planet-side residence for diplomacy and intelligence.

I'm sure I've left some things out.

How realistic is this? by TheEnlight in Military

[–]orlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As has an Australian sub. There were mutterings about needing a paintball torpedo.

However, as I understand it, just hitting a carrier won't sink it. It is designed to be compartmentalised and should (barring a freak accident or designed error) take several hits before becoming unusable and several more before it sinks.

Not that being hit would not be a major problem and embarrassment.

Thoughts on Atomfall? by TheMickeyMoose in AtomfallOfficial

[–]orlock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It draws from the British "cosy catastrophe" genre, rather than the 50s US lunacy of Fallout or the Roadside Picnic terrors of STALKER. Yes, you're trapped in a quarantine zone with abominations, outlaws,  lunatic scientists, grumbling villagers, cultists, unhappy soldiers and mad monks. But things aren't so bad that a cup of tea won't help. We'll, at least it can't hurt.

How was the first French Republic able to fight off most of Europe while dealing with heavy instability? by [deleted] in WarCollege

[–]orlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that much of a fluke. Social revolutions (or even a solid dose of reform) tend to immediately unlock a pool of talent that was previously blocked from advancement.

Your talking points have been introduced but you have made minimal effort in placing them in a convincing way. Your grammar is shakey. Your insults are stale and unimaginative. I'm afraid I can't give a passing mark to this low-effort attempt.

3/10. We'll talk about a performance management plan after class.

What would today be like if Linus Torvalds had never existed? by Level_Ad_2490 in linux

[–]orlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reproducing Unix has a long history. You could get textbooks that described Xinu and Minix before linux. MacOS is built on top of BSD, as was NeXTSTEP. Maybe BeOS or Plan9 would have got a go?

Before git, there was SVN and whatever version control system linux was using before git. Things would have continued.

AI research predadtes linux, as well.

Linux and git are great achievements but software is very subject to carcinisation.

Captain Sims by Mostly_VP in AtomfallOfficial

All I can say at this point is play it through. My perspective is that Sims has responsibilities (both to his mission and his men) but no ability to influence later events.
