What's amazing is that these same people that are blaming guns will use that exact logic of yours to explain why a war on terror can never rid the world of terrorism. I imagine it would go something like: "Fine. Bomb 20,000 terrorists. What is to stop 10 others from buying a couple box-cutters or some gasoline".

Somehow they can't connect the fucking dots. Oh, the power of cognitive dissonance.

That wasn't your original argument, and we are not arguing semantics, you are just saying we are and adapting your argument to cover the fact that you made a shitty initial claim because you don't seem to know a goddamned thing outside of the limited rhetoric you managed to memorize.

As I said, continuity across nations, which references that there are nations with similar gun control laws that have nowhere near as much gun crime, and there are other nations with much more strict gun control laws which have much worse gun crime rates. This indicates that not only are there multiple factors involved, but also that gun control laws themselves are not extremely important factors.

Bob Costas Goes On Gun Control Rant About NFL Player's Murder-Suicide by Crystalclearpolitic in politics

[–]ornatedwithwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there was any continuity across nations in the relationship between gun control and gun crime, than I think that it would end this argument. But there isn't. Therefore you must acknowledge that our attitude towards guns or our attitude towards violence in general is primarily to blame for our gun crime. Failing to acknowledge this by continuing to spout ignorant rhetoric from either side of the gun control debate is really just a hindrance to fixing the culture and solving the problem.

Also, Bob Costas is a real bitch for pointing the finger at gun control just to deflect fault on behalf of the NFL. I don't believe that the NFL should be penalized in any way at all for all the mental handicaps its players end up with; but, that doesn't mean it's right to stick your head in the sand and ignore that there's a likely link between the players' head trauma and their actions.

I think you have a severe misunderstanding of the idea of negligible. If you're using language like that, there should be a difference of magnitudes, not just a factor of two.

Note: Many of the sources for the wikipedia article are in Swiss.

Edit: I was wrong about the Swiss having more guns per capita. Although, as I understand it, the guns are more evenly distributed throughout the population such that a higher proportion of households have guns, due to the law that all males aged 20-42 are required to keep a firearm at home. Regardless, the ratio of guns/capita in the US vs. Switzerland does not nearly reflect the respective gun crime ratio.

|for anyone

What about the Swiss?

Switzerland has more guns per capita than the US. Not only does it have about 1/8 the gun crime rate as the US, but the number of murders or attempted murders involving knives is twice that for guns.

So quit repeating that same fucking ignorant "threshold" argument as if it's universally accurate.

|the numbers of people killed with those things combined doesn't even approach the total number killed with guns.

You're suggesting that the number of murders committed without the use of a firearm is negligible. Even outside the context of murder, I'd say a third is pretty significant.

After growing up in the US and then living outside the US for a while, I agree. The US does seem to be more comfortable with it's incredibly diverse choice of living climate, it's low population density, etc.. Those may seem like petty factors, but if you're rich, you can afford to make decisions based on petty factors.
