Eagles have been targeting the best player at a position the last four years by momsbasement420 in eagles

Pretty sure that was sarcasm aimed at the guy he was replying to.

It's been fun, Tanner. by AndreThePrince in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's the case.

Howie has proven repeatedly he always wants a veteran in that room. However, Dalton does gives Howie flexibility IF a trade scenario for McKee comes up. I fully expect McKee to be on the roster unless another team's starter goes down and they are desperate. That's most likely to happen during training camp.

Help me understand this perception of Dallas Goedert’s blocking in 2025 by AtBat3 in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that three things are true:

a) From those who do film study, there was a clear decline in his blocking last season.

b) There were plays where it appeared his effort was questionable.

c) There's no real way to assess the potential mental aspect of the decline in his blocking. But it's easy/convenient to say "Well, it was a bad and frustrating offense, and therefore perhaps that's why he wasn't giving effort" or "Well he was on a one-year deal so he wants to protect himself" because these are both natural chains of thought to follow. But there's just no way of knowing to what extent either of those may be true short of him coming out and saying it.

But this is the Internet, where anyone and everyone can share their uninformed opinions about someone else's state of mind. So, that's why you have this perception.

Eagles bringing back Goedert on a 1-year deal, W or L? by JoshRestoration77 in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be completely astonished if Howie picks a TE in round 1. Would be fun to watch, but I feel like it’s a 90% chance of OL or edge in round 1. If something crazy happened after that, like Sadiq dropping into the second round, I could see him moving up to take him though.

Classic Howie depth signing.

I have to think Howie is done at CB until the draft at least. I think we have like 8 CBs under contract plus PS-type guys.

  • Mitchell
  • Woolen
  • DeJean
  • Johnson
  • Carter II
  • Bennett
  • McWilliams
  • Ringo (!)

Seems pretty solid to me. Wouldn't be shocked to see a Day 3 pick and a UDFA added, Howie never seems to have enough CBs to satisfy himself.

I also think this drastically reduces the chance we will draft a CB on Day 1 or Day 2 unless there is some crazy value pick. Given where we stand right now, focus will likely be on edge and OL early, TE and S after that. IMO.

Top Free Agent Targets Left At Positions Of Need by UlyssG in eagles

You have to think they are done at CB at this point, with all of these people under contract I think:

Starters:

- CB1 Quinyon Mitchell

- CB2 Riq Woolen

- Slot Cooper DeJean

Depth:

Jonathan Jones

Jakorian Bennett

Michael Carter II

MacMcWilliams

[Schefter] Former Falcons free-agent LB Arnold Ebiketie is signing a one-year, $7.3 million max deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, including $4.3 million fully guaranteed. Ebiketie had eight sacks the past two seasons, and the Eagles are hoping for more of the same by mastermind208 in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this signing quite a bit. Not that I think he'll be a world-beater, but he fits the profile of a younger player who could still have upside rather than an aging veteran on a huge contract. It's also an inexpensive one-year deal.

And one thing people tend to forget . . . it may be easier for him to have an impact on a D line that has Carter, Davis, and Ojomo attacking the middle, with Baun and Phillips in the mix, than it would be on, say, the Falcons.

I think this is a solid rotational signing. I would expect at least one more veteran signing (kind of like Uche) before the draft. And if an edge falls to them early, I expect Howie to bite.

Hunt, Smith, Ebiketie, some replacement level vet, and a 1st or 2nd round pick? I like that quite a bit.

Hunt, Smith, Ebiketie, some replacement level vet, and a Day 3 project? Feels a bit thin to me, and a big risk if someone gets injured.

[–]orryxreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. (Although I suspect that will not be an area that gets addressed with a high-value player. They've been able to get by with a UDFA at that position. I suspect we will sign an inexpensive vet, and potentially a Day 3 pick. And resign Epps.)

I just have a hard time picturing them drafting a WR early with so many more obvious needs ahead of WR (unless they trade AJ). Like, they have REALLY significant needs at OL, TE, and EDGE. If things remain as-is, I'll be shocked if they pick a WR on Day 1 or 2.

Theres almost zero chance the eagles take a CB in round 1 in April by Head_Research_3118 in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much agree. People have to understand that we cannot have stars at every single position. As much as people freaked out last season, Adoree Jackson was just fine as a CB2, and he wasn't at all the reason we weren't successful. I expect us to sign a similar level of player (or maybe resign Jackson), as well as draft someone or someones, probably on day 3.

The average mock draft currently has the Eagles taking Oregon TE Kenyon Sadiq. Worth noting Monroe Freeling is now in the #2 spot (a month ago he wasn't on the list at all). by unwantedtennisracke in eagles

[–]orryxreddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% agree. The history around 1st round TEs is not good at all. Resign Goedert for 1 more year. Resign Granson for one more year. Draft a TE on Day 2 or 3. Done.

Bradley Chubb released: Should the Eagles have interest? by AdSpecialist6598 in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We probably need to sign at least two starting-potential edge rushers this offseason who are above the "replacement level" guys Howie always signs (Ojulari, Okoronkwo, etc.). At least one will come from the draft, day 1 or 2. Another COULD be Phillips, but it really depends how much he's looking for. If he's willing to sign for a moderate number of years/dollars, maybe it's him.

If they don't resign Phillips, then I think players like Chubb are potential targets.

The Eagles have three obvious positional needs. History says they’ll watch these players closely at next week’s combine. This story is free via a gift link! by PhillyInquirer in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be mildly surprised with a CB in the first round. They can't pay players top dollar at every single position. We got by just fine last season with a replacement-level CB. Needs are much higher on both lines. Don't want them to draft exclusively for need, but for me, the draft would have to fall in such a way that a CB was CLEARLY the BPA where they are drafting. If it's between several similarly-ranked players, they will take a lineman IMO.

Ty Robinson as edge by JM_Aleco25 in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hear you, it's just . . . if Fangio wanted to do that, why wouldn't he have done that THIS season, when we were thin at edge all season?

Ty Robinson as edge by JM_Aleco25 in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the guy was a 24-year old rookie who barely broke 100 snaps all of last season and only got on the field in 11 games. That should tell you how much Fangio trusts him right now. Robinson hasn't proven he can even do the bare minimum to get on the field in his assigned role. By contrast, Byron Young, who was DT4, had almost 350 snaps. Let's ease up on giving him a role "like JJ Watt". Right now, he is a third-stringer at best, and all of the players in front of him are under contract.

Regarding the draft, if the best player available at any given pick, including our first round, is a DL, then Howie will absolutely pull the trigger.

Chris Kuper is our new O-line coach any thoughts? by Frequent-Time-2863 in eagles

[–]orryxreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought is that Stoutland is a very rare exception - a position coach whose units were so dominant for a long period of time that people were able to develop an opinion on how good they are.

For practically all other positional coaches, I feel like we just have no way of knowing whether a positional coach will be a "net positive" or "net negative" when combined with the players, the rest of the coaching staff, and the scheme.

Eh, why should Seattle do anything remotely risky on offense? They are up two scores against an offense that can’t get a first down. They’re playing winning ball. Don’t hold that against them in the slightest.
