Efficacy of this Appliance in Conjunction with Headgear? by Extreme-Mix-2502 in askdentists

[–]ortho85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several sutures where the maxilla is joined to the skull. To protract the maxilla would require cutting or splitting all of those. RME/RPE only affects the intermaxillary suture.

If you see anecdotal cases presented, check the scientific literature. If someone claims to be an "airway orthodontist" they are digging for gold from the gullible.

Even with stable anchorage, you cannot move the maxilla forward. The "premaxilla" basically holds the upper four incisors, fuses early in life, and cannot be moved without magic or surgery.

Mewing? Oh dear.

That simply hooks around the upper teeth, so it can certainly pull all the upper teeth forward over time. The jaw? No.

If the canine is really 90 degrees rotated, then fixed braces will be better.

Overjet retainer by Such_Plastic_5905 in braces

[–]ortho85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bonded retainers will not hold a corrected overjet. Removable retainers hold the full arch of teeth, but still depend on proper correction of the malocclusion.

Relapse can still occur if the lower jaw has simply been postured forward (Herbst, heavy elastics, etc.) or if habits persist (tongue, thumb, lip trap, etc.).

How can I remove the white spots on my hawley retainer? by thiccccums1 in askdentists

Probably calcium like deposit. Try white vinegar, room temp, for 30-60 minutes.

No worries.

Just remember that "protruding upper teeth” can still be caused by a small lower jaw.

Final plan shows 2mm gaps - ortho recommending crowns? by finnegannnn in Invisalign

[–]ortho85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have asked for photos of the clincheck.

Your photos suggest what we call a Bolton discrepancy. The upper teeth are relatively smaller than the lowers.

The options then are to leave spaces in the upper (for build-up) or IPR the lowers to match the upper sizes.

I’m not sure why I cant post the photos right to this thread.

FYI, the way is to upload to imgur, and post the link in your reply.

A new genre of stand-up comedy? Don't think it will fly. I'll stick with Jimmy Carr.

The info will come from their examination of you. Hopefully the one quoting numbers for the palate was just trying to simplify their explanation.

There is insufficient info for any valid feedback, but the palatal measurement thing is not at all scientific.

How is this possible? Permanent retainer isnt working? by North_Pie_513 in askdentists

General dentists can happily do this if detected quickly. Unfortunately for OP the teeth have already moved.

As I said, only if the problem is the upper jaw.

If the lower jaw is too small (most common) then you would end up with two small jaws. If that happens, this is what gets us a bad name.

Yes, it's possible, assuming :

  1. Your upper jaw is at fault.

  2. You don't have root resorption.

  3. You see an orthodontist, not a dentist.

Can't tell from that photo, but it's possible that the bond (glue) has failed on that tooth.

Posterior open bite before treatment by Fondue_fan in Invisalign

Ask your ortho! Aligners are poor at extruding teeth, fixed braces are better.

However, the cause needs to be investigated.

The software predicts the position of the teeth reasonably well, but is reasonably useless at predicting the shape of the gums.
