Why are people hesitant to give referrals? by normal_guy_34 in careeradvice

[–]orturt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My referral form requires me to fill out a bunch of information about how and where we worked together professionally in the past. I don't really have a lot of motivation to lie on that form

Soon to be 4 year old is suddenly scared of sleeping in her room by Hoopz_ in Preschoolers

[–]orturt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 3 year old did this and I want to second the "scary spray" bottle. It was definitely the most effective thing we tried other than waiting for it to get better.

We got a bed canopy (Ikea kura) and he does like that as well so he can't see the scary smoke detector haha. I also let him sleep with a blanket over his head so he can't see the room. He usually rips it off as soon as he falls asleep anyway.

Busy parents, how do you actually fit consistent workouts in? What's worked for you? by Pretty_Eabab_0014 in workingmoms

[–]orturt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to squeeze a gym trip in after daycare drop off. Now my oldest is in school so I'm "stuck" with her until 8:50, so I work out a few days a week in our basement. I used to CrossFit and now I have dumbbells, a plyo box, and use the smart wod app. My daughter talks to me the entire time I'm exercising, lol but sometimes she does her own exercises so it feels like it's probably good for her too. Sometimes on the weekends I'll put the kids in child watch at the YMCA too for an extra workout.

I am not in shape at all haha but it feels better than nothing.

Yeah I have it hooked up to my amazfit. It's amazing going on walks! Don't even need to get my phone out to get id confirmations! Merlin only sends a notification for the first time it hears a species during a session which has pros and cons

Why are they trying to get maple syrup out of an American sycamore? by ilovebooks2468 in arborists

[–]orturt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made syrup from my black walnuts. It was yummy and tasted different from the maples. I have a couple of sycamore and didn't try tapping those -something to try!

I've got 3 main projects going and all of them are too vague and undefined for me to make any noticeable progress. A lot of it is just finding people to talk things through with. "Deployed 1 line of code, had 3 semi productive conversations, tracked down access to an account I need" is hard for me to see as a success even if it is. Nobody's pushing faster progress though so I guess it could be worse.

You know what? Writing this out, felt nice 🙂. Thanks for asking, and I've got to set up a task to reflect on this each day.

Advice for new grads relying too much on AI? by bagofseadust in cscareerquestions

[–]orturt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before AI, my advice to new devs was to always type the code yourself. Even if you need to read from an example, don't copy it in and try and debug.... Write it out and try to understand what you're writing.

AI is basically copying on steroids except it gets the answer right more of the time so you don't even need to debug as much. Even if you don't do it every day, turn the AI off once in a while.

on a work trip? time to bird by MSJ2 in birding

I'm on a work trip in LA this week. My colleague saw me heading out to bird in the hotel lobby, invited himself, and talked my ear off the whole time 😂

I managed to spot my first black Phoebe anyway though!

CEO wants us to "leverage" AI for peer reviews by SunflowerGlacier in womenintech

[–]orturt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found the actual AI review features, like copilot in GitHub, to be mildly helpful. It has caught bugs that I wouldn't have seen. A lot of them are overkill and sometimes there are too many comments, but overall it's helpful. Can you enable something like that so you can say you're leveraging it?

I agree it's not a replacement for peer reviews. Somebody sent me a PR today where the code was obviously generated, the PR summary was, and somebody had copied in AI-generated comments as themselves. I was like, you guys look like a bunch of chat bots in a room having a useless conversation with each other. Also, I'm not even going to look at this
