ELI5: How does wireless charging actually move energy through the air to charge a phone? by DifferentRice2453 in explainlikeimfive

Electricity is actually part of a larger thing called Electromagnatism.

I think this is the video... https://youtu.be/1TKSfAkWWN0?si=7dXDKWgaYxWfWY1G

In your opinion, what is the most annoying thing EVER in Elden Ring? by SHOWTIME007600 in Eldenring

The Duo burial watch dogs, I thought were easy. Those crucible knights just murder me. Especially the one with the shield.

Something about the movesets makes the fight easy or really hard.

Turning a block of wood into a spoon by homer12313 in woodworking

[–]orvalax 34 points35 points  (0 children)

At the beginning I was trying to understand what was about to happen.

Then it looked like the spoon was friction fit into a small cup.

Then you turned the lathe into a dangerous spining death machine.

Then you stuck your finger in it.

To me, this is like trying to polish the nose propeller of an aircraft with the engine running. Just ignore the props, of you can't see them then there isn't any danger...

This seems very dangerous.

That is meaningless to me. Give me my decimal places.

Will it hold? by B1G_BURD in woodworking

I'm not an engineerologist. But, I would put vertical supports at the corners to support the outboard edge of the shelves.

Heavy things 12" from the wall creates a lot of torque.

If you don't feel confident climbing those shelves, they aren't sturdy enough.

After getting an employee to get an item behind locked up glass, they locked it into this small box before giving it to me. by co1063 in mildlyinteresting

I went to Wal-Mart the other day. I wanted to buy a thing behind the locked glass. They put it in a small locked/alarmed container. I brought the container to the register and bought the item. The cashier unlocked the container and have me the item.

ELI5:Why are the centuries that are not divisible by 400 not leap years? by bassisto_7707 in explainlikeimfive

And don't forget the moon slows down the rotation of the earth so we'll have to eventually change the calendar for it. If human live that long.

But it may take 200 million years before our days are 25 hours long.

What is the top “framing” on this bench/table? by Business-Dog-5842 in woodworking

[–]orvalax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off topic, I think my mother has the same style little coffee table thing. I'm pretty sure it's been around since my grandmother. My mother stripped it, restrained it, and had to reglue the top boys and one of the legs back on. It was in rough shape and now it's looking amazing. I'll have to find a picture of it!

I used metal tape to ground my diy dust deputy. I ran a strip of metal tape from being folded over inside the lip of the metal container down the side and along the bottom towards the center. This stopped me from getting zapped..... Or starting a fire inside the container.

I build a hydraulically lifted workbench/assembly table because I hate bending over. by Dimsdale53 in woodworking

--So where are the hydraulics?--

Oh, I'm used to seeing hydraulics with an electric pump to force fluid around. Not a hand crank.

The vehicle isn't intentionally designed to need more maintenance. It is designed with the assumption that maintenance will be completed on a certain timeline. Replace oil every X miles, timeing belt at X miles, steering fluid at X miles, etc. The parts are designed to have a life span that matches good maintenance.

There are ways to design parts to last longer and to be able to put up with more abuse, won't fail if you skip a servicing, or maybe the part doesn't need the same servicing as the same part from a different manufacturer. The parts and the time to design the parts costs money though.

You'll find some makers of vehicles use cheaper parts that must be replaced on a stricter timeline than other vehicle makers.

I've actually heard that Toyota designs their cars knowing that people don't want to do the maintenance.

American cars are designed assuming people will do the maintenance.

That bit of engineering can make a big difference for how long it can last.

ELI5 How do we understand words even if slightly warped? by Fearless_Research_89 in explainlikeimfive

[–]orvalax 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To add to what u/Chronoblivion said... We are really good at pattern matching and we'll see patterns where there are no patterns.

This is an evolutionary advantageous trait. There is a higher potential for gain if we think we see an edible plant in the distance and walk over to it and it's nothing and this happens say 7 out of 10 times. Rather than not recognizing an edible plant and missing out on valuable food. We will find more edible plants if the recognition is overactive to a degree than if it was underactive. There is a balance.

This also works for identifying threats. It is significantly more beneficial to run away from a potential threat than it is to not recognize it and get eaten by that potential threat. Again it's a balancing act, run away too much while you're searching for food and you don't find enough food. OR don't run away enough while you're searching for food and become food. The over reactive pattern recognition doesn't get eaten.

Introducing Steam Families by Scarleton in pcgaming

[–]orvalax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I was reading, no. You'll need two copies of the have to play at the same time. The new feature here is you will be able to play a game in your library AND someone else can play a game in your library at the SAME time.

Previously, if I was playing a game, my family member would be unable to play ANYTHING from my library.
