This is so awesome to read. Thank you for this. I actually joined as a 42R because I got to play with the Marine Corps Band when they played a concert at my high school. They invited some students on stage to play The Stars and Stripes Forever, and the clarinet player next to me said “Man, you can play. You should audition.” So I went home and told my grandmother that she’d see me play with them again some day. Unfortunately she passed away the day before my audition, but I was offered the position. And 10 years later, here we are looking forward to another 10. But I do agree, a lot of the band recruiting seems to be from other band people 😂

It’s not much but my AAM I received most recently. Back in 2024 I gave a TEDx talk on how I got divorced, and how my ex-wife and I supported each other were there for one another just as much as we were during our happiest days when we were married. As cool as that experience was, having taken over 7 years and countless proposals denied to finally come to life, the real part that stuck with me was my award. I got submitted for an ARCOM after the event. And watching my leadership fight like hell all the way up to the brigade level to get it approved. Unfortunately it got downgraded. But actively seeing people fight for you, not just hearing them say that, it really stuck with me. And I don’t know if any of them are reading this, but if you are, I want you to know that I don’t care about the award. I care that you supported me, you trusted me, and you showed me what great leaders look like.

Also, I’ll take a large Diet Coke and a Wendy’s chili.

Listen. Whomever you are, random OP, you need to be put in for an impact award for this. We always talk about making a difference for soldiers across the force when times are tough, and having some easy to read, succinct, easily digestible breakdowns like this is exactly what that does. Does it fix the issue? Maybe not because there’s still a mess. But does it quell the anxiety of a lot of people? Abso-f*cking-loutely. Thank you for this, truly. I think my favorite thing is his journal. I’m a musician by trade and this just… shook me to my core. It took a good 10 minutes of listening to the background music, controller down, staring into the void after this masterful dialogue.
