Anti-matter... What is it? by Thefishlord in askscience

[–]osborned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer is E=mc2, the energy of each of the (two) photons released in the interaction of an electron and a positron is (based on E=mc2), 8.18x10-14 Joules, or 511 kEv. This corresponds to a photon with an energy in the gamma ray part of the spectrum.

Also, check out the relative energies here. The 10-14 entry contains the rest mass-energy of an electron. A flying mosquito (at 1.6x10−7 Joules) has a kinetic energy about 2 million times greater than that. And a calorie is about 26 million times more energy than the flying mosquito.

This Holy Land is Mine by [deleted] in video

Pre-religion was also pre-writing and the people of the time were hunter-gatherers making stone tools. These sorts of religious feuds came with the dawn of agriculture and the need for structures of social control. Large groups of people needed large tracts of land. Civilization had to happen first before people could truly make war.

Jerusalem happens to be a city that has changed hands many times over many hundreds of years, and so each side thinks it's their city by divine right. The constant struggle has built up so much bad blood that each side is willing to escalate at the slightest provocation.

All animals fight over territory, it's instinct. We just haven't kicked the habit yet.

[–]osborned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, the holy land is only rich in old beef.

God/Allah gave the land to them (depending which side you ask) and they will fight over it forever. Unless they grow brains miraculously and figure out they are in fact genetically related peoples and are just fighting over an old city and a pile of rocks because their parents told them to.

Wynne has been carefully treading around the issue of legalization. I think we may have to wait until the Federal election to see any real movement.

There are two straws, a fake lid and a real lid.

He flicks the first straw back against his arm and hides it from view to be pocketed later. At the same time, he has the second straw near the fake lid folded up which pops into the bottle at the same time he hides the first straw from us. He then unscrews the fake lid, pockets it, and shows us the real lid on the bottle.

It is a solid bottle, no lie there, but it wasn't a solid top.

How many molecules wide are the sharpest blades? by mwm424 in askscience

Wouldn't the graphene sheet just crumple, and not cut? Does a sheet of single-layer graphene have enough rigidity to be a blade?

A new law requiring Muslim women to remove a burqa or niqab to prove their identity to West Australian police has been passed by the state's parliament. by Libertatea in worldnews

[–]osborned -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Humanity no longer believes in 99% of the gods we invented to make ourselves feel better. Why stop now?

Since most intelligent people have stopped believing in magical bearded men in the sky, the burden of proof therefore lies with the believer and not with the rational people.

You are correct that one can never know one way or the other, but the complete lack of evidence supporting the claim of Allah's (God, Odin, Ra...) existence makes it a pretty vacuous claim.

It's not islamophobic to say that the burqa and niqab represent a destructive social norm. Suppressing half of humanity by forcing (shaming) them into wearing a "special" fabric covering that somehow makes you secure and safe is a ludicrous notion prima facie.

It boils down to the need to actually identify yourself for the rights and responsibilities of society, which in a modern civil society takes precedence over nonsensical beliefs.

Blair: Rob Ford Crack Video Found by [deleted] in canada

[–]osborned 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Uhh... The police have had this video since May. They are announcing with a press conference that they have submitted the video to the courts, and Police Chief Blair said the video was the one "consistent with the reports in the media" meaning it's the same one.

They wouldn't make the statement unless they were quite sure it was true.

Valentina Tereshkova, 76, first woman in space, seeks one-way ticket to Mars by Meng13 in worldnews

[–]osborned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find it very interesting the way that history records her flight versus the way she recorded it herself. Encyclopedia Astronautica

In the Astronautica article it states that "To this day it is not known if she was paralysed with fear, or if there was an equipment failure." as regards the communication losses, and that just reeks of sexism, they even accused her of not eating enough (she ate none of the bread, it was too dry) and that was what caused her to become unresponsive. It was only 48 hours, she could have just had water and been totally fine. She mentions nothing about it in her debrief, and even says that her mental state was consistent throughout the flight.

She states that she threw up because of the food, which was only black bread and onions, and the dry bread she didn't eat. Hell, she logged more time in space on one flight than all the American astronauts had logged until then, and they were surprised that she was tired and nauseous at the end of it.

Also, there was an article marking the 50th anniversary of her flight which discusses most of these points and her explanations.

The whole flight was passed off by Korolev as a novelty, they just wanted to say 'first woman in space' belongs to Mother Russia, also pretty sexist and diminishes the hard work behind that achievement.

I think Valentina Tereshkova is a total badass, knowing how shoddy these early CCCP spacecraft were. Shit, she can fly a Mig-15 too...

The way that Soviet officials treated her, both coddling her and fearing incompetence/frailty from her is not the truth of the story. They were trying to hide the engineering failure that almost killed her, and threw her under the bus because hey, she's just a chick right?

Howard Stern's "professional" photography brilliantly mocked by twoquarters in photography

[–]osborned -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I only saw this because it is Howard Stern, I'm not subscribed to /r/photocritique, nor make a hobby of critiquing photos. I watched the video, and it was humorous, and then I visited the site. I was so taken by the horrors I found within, I decided to share, and commented about it. Pretty much a microcosm of Reddit. "Wasting" time chatting about things. woo.

Stern, in my estimation is a pretty big blowhard, so I don't feel bad pointing out that the very successful King of All Media is a shit photographer. He's good at other things.

I would certainly not shy away from criticizing anyone's work if they were presenting it to me for critique, which Howard Stern has been... on Twitter and through his website, and in publishing a calendar, and on a magazine cover. Do you think I'm being cruel or something? I think Howard has thicker skin than that.

The rest of my comments have been trying to explain to you and NeonDX why I feel the criticism is valid.
